When I was in high school I had a silver James Avery armadillo ring that I loved. It was way too big for me and I was too lazy to get it resized, and while walking down a gravel pathway and gesturing one day, it flew off and landed in the gravel where it was basically invisible. I looked for it for hours, and whenever I walked down that pathway for the remainder of high school, but I never found it. I hope someone found it eventually and got to enjoy a free ring.
A happier story: My grandfather made silver jewelry as a hobby, and I have a few pieces of it that are priceless sentimentally. There was one braided silver ring he made that I used to wear daily and would often absentmindedly take off and flip through my fingers. I was at a concert and sitting in the back row of seating which was almost flush with the back wall of the venue, but there was a space in between them that dropped down into a dark crevice. I was flipping my ring and of course dropped it straight down into the dark abyss. I was immediately devastated because the ring was irreplaceable, but I looked over the edge of the crevice to see if there was any chance of retrieving it. Amazingly, the ring was sitting on a wooden support beam no more than a foot down into the chasm. It was balanced precariously on the edge. I jammed it right back on my finger and since then I try not to fiddle with my jewelry.
I feel so bad for you!! You made a mistake. It is easy to get distracted with small children...you had a lot going on.
Please stop beating yourself up about this....at least the school knows who presumably has your rings.
Please give us all an update...remain positive. I believe that you will get your rings back.
Culprit seems to be identified, shouldn't be too hard to have it sorted out, even if you need to get police involved.
That's the thing I am not sure what we can do legally...? The kid that found them apparently is a 3rd grader & he left with them. If his parents are dishonest they can say he found something else, ect... I got nervous when the school secretary told my husband she had not been able to reach them by phone![]()
It's true that the parents could be dishonest, but there are ways to coerce them a little bit. Since you have an eye-witness that saw the child pick up two rings at the location where you remember dropping them. You can file a police report for lost items, since the child "picked them up" it obviously isn't theft but the parents might be more willing to give it back knowing that there is a police report. /shrug
Another important point is that most insurance policies require you to submit a police report before filing a claim.
As for the school not being able to reach them, it sometimes takes me 72hrs to respond at times. (forgot to recharge cell phone/didn't notice it died/etc...). So I'd give it at least a day or two before you start believing the worst in people.
Thanks! My husband went to the school this morning & they said they have not received a response back from the parents & the student did not go to school today so they have turned it over to the police, I am waiting at my home for them to come take my statement, and they will be handling it from here on out.
I don't think it is looking too greatI will keep you guys updated.
