does anyone care about this? not me. they're going for a ride. are we supposed to be impressed? I guess so

A publicity stunt for Blue Origin and Lauren Sanchez and Katy Perry and Gayle King and whoever else went along. Not exactly a "mission" to space, unless scientists want to see the impact of a short space flight on Botox and fillers and boob jobs.

Also, don't you love how this crew of women didn't seem to care all that much about the incredible technology but instead seemed more focused on their sexy spacesuits and how good they think they look in them? That's all I heard about this, Perry and Sanchez behaving like stereotypical bimbos, as opposed to serious women who wanted to help inspire children interested in space flight and the sciences.

I think it is interesting the women chosen for this are all in a very niche circle. They hang around certain politico donors and events too. Really weird. I suspect PR.

So, I’m happy to let Lauren be Lauren but I have to admit this really rubbed me the wrong way. At a time when female astronauts (and women in STEM generally) are under attack, perhaps we could focus on something other that how sexy the uniforms are for the first female civilian launch?

ETA: I walked away after drafting this and now I see that I am not the only one with this thought!

at least we're not paying for it

I don't click unlinks about it, I haven't seen any coverage or news about it, no one has to see or hear to if they don't want!
That probably applies to every thread in this forum...

I've seen something about it almost every day for the past few weeks, even yesterday on the Sunday morning show there was a long segment about what trinkets they'd be taking into space. I mostly noticed it because until then I didn't realize Gayle K. had children.

It definitely applies for me because I don't care much for celeb news - like what would be gossiped about in magazines, so it's very easy to avoid anything I don't care for!

The way this struck me, was that it’s patronizing. Making a big deal out of sitting in a capsule projected into space for three minutes and then coming down. I guess they think it’s a huge gigantic deal because they’re women. That’s insulting.
And to call them astronauts is to take away the seriousness of everyone who’s gone through rigorous training And at sometimes great risk in maiden voyages that haven’t been tried before. Those are astronauts.
I found it embarrassing.
