Is your bag REALLY a "unicorn"!?... I think NOT

Honestly, without trying to be snarky, I don‘t really care that much. This is the same as the „what is a classic“ debate but on another level. I honestly think we don‘t need a rule when it comes to unicorn bags.
I do agree however that PS/Resellers call everything a unicorn in order to sell more but I never paid attention to them in the first place.

As of most recent, I've seen the word "unicorn" and I DON'T agree with the usage.

There will always an elusive hard to get Chanel bag. In the past, there would be one maybe two within the whole year! Remember the Chanel Crise 2016 Mermaid Iridescent bag or the Chanel 2019 SS Pearly Flap Bag?! In my opinion, those are true unicorn bags. If you were to sell them today there would be a significant markup.

However these days I feel as though ALOT of bags are now getting the 'unicorn' treatment when I just don't think they are.

Unicorn bags = are a true 'one of a kind', takes your breath away, outside of the norm, something truly special!
NOT just a 'hard to get bag'

I'm seeing with the 20/21 collections the caramel/gold/rose claire craze... a regular Chanel double flap is now considered a "unicorn" REALLY?? It's just another color! Should we be calling them just hard to get rather than 'unicorn'?

In all honesty, I think the phase has been pushed by resellers/PS to justify crazy second-hand market markups. Or it makes the shopper feel better for going through abnormal leaps and bounds to secure a bag when they normally wouldn't have.

What do you guys think?
What do YOU consider a TRUE UNICORN bag?
Are we using the term unicorn to loosely?
Let's discuss!
I totally agree. Every year there are at least several „unicorn“ bags. Yes they are hard to get, but in the end of the day they are just another iteration of bags seen before..

The Pearl Bag didn't become a "Unicorn" for like months afterward when everyone on IG started getting them. In fact there is a post here when it came out and most didn't even like it ...lol. It was actually available for several months after release, after it was sold out and every "influencer" had one, all of a sudden everyone had to have it and it pushed the price in to crazy town.

I consider the Rose-Gold a bit different. The official name was "light-gold" but no one really knew what it looked like until it came out. As soon as people saw that it actually looked like a beautiful Rose-Gold, everything in that shade flew off the shelf, including SLG's.

The only thing i would consider being a Unicorn is an actual Unicorn, and those bags are not Unicorns. Those are simply handbags.

Omg I can’t let my 2 year-old ever see this - she will go crazy (she already knows to say “mama” for anything she wants from TV:D)

For me, a unicorn bag is something very very rare and hard to find. If there are many on the resale market, then it’s not a true unicorn. The person’s desire for the item does play a factor as well. I believe I have two of those in my collection as I’ve searched and searched for the exact bags and have only seen one or two of them lol My M/L 18c iridescent caviar flap bag with the glitter leather is super rare. I’ve only seen two others online (black w shiny ruthenium) I’ve seen tons of minis but not the M/L. Also, I have a small black Trendy CC with SILVER hardware and I’ve only seen one other one on YouTube lol To me, those are unicorns as I searched for years and could not find many. Just my $0.02!

We shd start a unicorn poll ;) but agree it's a subjective term and very overused.
I hope I have a few unicorns in my collection so I can get lots of money if I ever decide to sell :graucho: Caviar minis? They have a big mark up these days would we consider them to be unicorns? I wonder..

Would peeps label the NYC Mobile Art bag, the medium flap in candy apple red patent a unicorn given there were only 25 or 50 produced? There are a few pieces that I would deem rare but unicorn to me would mean an actual unicorn shaped bag. Unicorn seems like an odd turn of phrase to describe anything other than the mythical animal.

Yep, this.

I only saw the word unicorn on TPF for a highly sort after bag. Mass produced items to me is not what I would consider a unicorn item. To me the term I prefer to use is rare that only and one item usually custom made to your specifications.

According to the dictionary, a unicorn is something that is highly desirable but difficult to find or obtain (of course this is second only to the true definition which is the mythical animal represented by the horse with a single straight horn projecting from its forehead). I think the operative word is hard to find. When I see all influencers and personal shoppers having such item, I wouldn't call it a unicorn bag. It may be at first but when many seems to have it then it is not hard to obtain then it is therefore not a unicorn bag.

I also agree with everyone saying here that it varies for people. If they desired something really bad and had a hard time finding it then it is a unicorn bag for them. The pink iridescent bag was offered to me by my SA when everyone wanted it but I didn't get it. It wasn't something I desired and I didn't find it hard to obtain. The caramel bag is something I highly desire and i am finding it hard to get, but then i see personal shoppers posting them online and i see lots of people unboxing them now, is it hard to find item really? i think not. i agree that personal shoppers and resellers are just making it harder to find in the stores. When I finally get the caramel bag, will i consider it unicorn bag, not at all.

so I just scrolled through this thread, do you know this feeling when a word looses its meaning when you read it too often? got that now with unicorn :giggle:

but I recently thought this word was popping up a lot. however, to each their own mythical creations.. :flowers:
