Invisalign vs. regular braces?

I realize this is an old thread, but I'll go ahead and contribute.
Has anyone else gone the traditional braces rout in adulthood?
I'm almost 32 years old and am going to get traditional braces this year. I was given Invisalign as an option, but I know I'm not disciplined enough to wear them effectively. Plus, it would take me 18 months instead of 12 months if I do the regular ones.

I'm a bit self conscious about the thought of having braces as an adult (I had them during my pre-teen and teen years, but didn't wear my retainer). I feel like it's going to be worth it in the end, though. One year of feeling self conscious in braces beats the remainder of my life feeling self conscious about my overjet!

I'm 25 and have been wearing my braces for a year now, I have at most 6 months left of them and I'm really happy that I did it. I was very self conscious about it in the beginning, but I forgot about after a month or two, people mostly don't comment on them and if they do, people usually have something nice to say or talk about their own experiences wearing braces, so it's not an issue at all.

I had braces in my late teens. I hated it for the fact that i felt embarrassed having to wear braces at such a late age when all my peers had them during middle school. For that reason I'm probably partial to invisalign. If not for insurance my braces would have been $5,000 out of pocket so I'm not sure how much more invisalign would be.

I did not really want braces as an adult. I had very, very crooked teeth. I went to an orthodontist to hopefully qualify for Invisalign but I did not qualify because my teeth were way too crooked....I was too bad of a case so the orthodontist said that Invisalign would not work for me.

I ended up getting all porcelain veneers instead which was very expensive though. The dentist was able to work magic and somehow aligned every veneer straight so now I have a perfectly straight, bright smile. I love them but they were very costly.

However, a smile is an important thing that you should feel comfortable with. Previously I had never wanted to smile in public with my real teeth. Now, with all straight veneers I show my teeth all the time.

I do like the idea of Invisalign I just did not qualify for it because my teeth were way too bad. :smile1:

How funny - just got back from my consultation today. I had braces when I was younger, stopped wearing retainers, and now that I'm in my 30s and can financially afford to pay for things that I want, getting Invisalign has always been on my list! I have minor crowding on the bottom and my upper teeth are slightly protruding. Nothing major but minor enough to bother me. Got quoted $5,000 for Invisalign Lite (7 months duration), and insurance will cover half the costs, so not too bad. Although $5k seems a bit high considering they range from $3k to $6k, and I'm not even getting the full treatment. I'm going to consult w/ other orthos in the area to see if their prices are comparable. I'm in SoCal so cost of living is definitely on the higher end of the spectrum.

Hello

Invisalign: The basis of Invisalign gives patients the option to have braces discretely because they are made to be invisible.

Metal braces: Braces can achieve a better result than Invisalign. It has more force to move teeth into the desired position.
The most obvious difference between braces and Invisalign is that braces are not removable. However, they are extremely efficient at fixing complex issues, and they typically work faster than Invisalign.

Does anyone have advice for which would be a better choice? Also, are there ways to be on a payment plan when getting invisalign or do you have to pay everything up front?

Are there any ways to get the price knocked down a bit? Thanks.

I had braces when I was 13 and invisalign when i was 21. They're both effective.

Invisalign is only good for cosmetic reasons and if you are able to wear the trays majority of the time. And you need to be mindful of not having hot drinks as it could wreck the trays. And would need to clean the trays on a regular basis because of the dried up saliva

I'm in my late 30s. Just got braces. I never had them in my teens. Although my teeth were not perfect, they were good enough that I was okay with them. I lost a tooth (baby tooth) a few years ago. The space was too small to fit an implant in. I needed braces to increase the gap.

Braces have been more painful than I thought they would be. They SUCK. I've managed to get most of the ulcers in my mouth to heal, except for my bottom lip. It's swollen, so I bite it, making it swollen, so I bite it... No matter how careful I am, I bite it every day.

They are kind of embarrassing. I find myself not smiling like I used to.

Everyone tells me it will be worth it and I'm going to love my teeth. I hope they are right.
