Invisalign vs. regular braces?

I am a few weeks away from finishing with Invisalign. It will have been two years total, and I had pretty crooked teeth. Very pleased with the results. My ortho gave me a 3% discount when I asked about payment options. Definitely ask around among providers in your area.

About 6 years ago I did invisaline on the top and bottom. My teeth were pretty straight but I had one tooth on the top that was crooked and too high up... The invisaline fixed it and it looks great now!!! Each time you change to the new set of "teeth" it hurts a little bit because it is tight but other than that it was easy and I would recommend it to anyone!

Invisalign isn't strong enough to correct all problems, so that might be a big deciding factor! I was so against the idea of traditional braces that I shopped around until I found someone willing to try Invisalign on me, and it ended up being a huge waste of time and money :(.

Also agree with one of the previous comments that you need to be really disciplined about using it for the minimum number of hours each day. You'll end up brushing your teeth 3 or 4 times a day (after every meal) and you can't drink much other than water while the aligners are on.
Does Invisalign have any side effects?

I've had both, traditional in junior high and Invisalign after college. I should have never had braces until I was ready to wear a retainer.

I had no side effects! I absolutely love my smile and my dentist is amazing, he's a perfectionist so we match well. I wear my retainer every evening! I use retainer cleaners in the morning and leave it in the disposable cup until the evening. By using the cleaner tablets my retainer doesn't get grimy.

As am adult, I made the choice to go with the Invisalign. You need to be committed to wearing them for it to work. My ortho offered the care credit card and a 5% discount for early payment and the interest free if paid in 12 months. It was worth the investment to have straight teeth that are no longer protruding outward or have spacing gaps. I still wear a retainer in the evening to keep things in place

I finished with my Invisalign treatment about 2 months ago, and am very happy with the result. Now wearing a retainer for the evenings. I had very crooked teeth, both top and bottom, with overcrowding. I was very strict with myself about wearing the aligners for as long as possible each day, I think this may be one of the reasons people don't get good results.

I was quoted $8k for traditional braces and $6k for the Invisalign. 20% payment up front with the rest paid over a year. The ortho did give me a special price if I commited by a certain date, but by then I had already made up my mind to get them, so worked great. Definitely check around, as a friend of mine was quoted $8k for the same.

I would definitely go for invisalign if I had the choice. I started wearing braces pretty late (17) and having braces on at that age does make you look younger than you actually are.

Also it gets pretty annoying having to clean your teeth between your braces, and all the other problems that can pop up like the wires poking into your lips and cheeks or brackets coming off when you eat something that is a little bit too hard.

Great info. Thank you everyone!

Have wanted Invisalign since it came on the market. Was just at my dentist last week and she gave me a sample of the newer material to take to my allergist. I have heard it is hypoallergenic and the material is sturdier so metal braces may not be necessary.

Does anyone have a review?

Don't be scared of braces if that's what your orthodontist suggests! I had a palate expander and braces for two years while I was in my 20's. I paid an extra $200 for the white ceramic brackets and clear elastics. It was annoying, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. My teeth are so beautiful now.

If you get braces, invest in a waterpik. It cleans your mouth wonderfully!

I have invisalign and have had it since March of 2013. I had braces when I was very young and didn't follow my retainer plan (like all kids!) so now as an adult I'm stuck fixing my teeth.

I had overcrowding on my lower teeth which made my upper teeth crooked. My teeth are almost perfect now. I'm on about tray 30 and have a few weeks left. You have to be SERIOUSLY disciplined with invisalign. You have to wear them for about 22 hours a day and brush your teeth after every single meal. You can't really chew gum (since you need to wear it 22 hours) and you can't eat or drink anything but water while they're in.

It is absolutely NOT hypoallergenic and either is the material they use to take impressions. I have a pretty bad allergic reaction after every time they take an impression. My tongue swells and tingles like crazy. Also, with every new tray, my mouth feels a bit itchy for the first day, so I advise you to wash it out with toothpaste before you put it in your mouth for the first time.

All being said, I would take invisalign over metal braces any day. Pm me if you have any questions!

Thank you Swally!

Great review and much appreciated! Sounds like like you got the newer material. My dentist was checking the dates on her discarded trays to find a newer tray sample. So hoping my allergist gives me the ok.

I did use am iffy material for a retrainer but when it's only in
my mouth for a few minutes it's doable. Not sure if Invisalign will require their own mold material but I'll deal with that next.

My dentist is into natural dentistry and works around her patients requests so she is happy thinking up new techniques.

Assuming I'll need to remove any finish or film on each tray before a fitting. When I first did the research some people on an Invisalign board said their dentists cleaned the new tray before fitting, don't remember what exactly what was used.

I did find out that a lot of problems that could have been allergies were more lightly caused by people removing their trays and reinserting them again without sanitizing their hands. Also saw that some people felt they got cavities because of trays. So the whole project does require a lot of dedication and discipline.

I have heard of people getting cavities, which makes sense- if you eat and put your invisalign on without brushing it's like you're suffocating the teeth with dirt. Thankfully I haven't had any (knock on wood!)

The material they use for impressions is special for invisalign, so it will likely be the first time you're exposed to it. My dentist did mention that it's very similar to what they use for a crown? (i think it was a crown, not positive), which i've never had. I guess I would be allergic to that too. Good luck! PM me if you have q's/need advice.

Purplepoodles,

Lots of orthodontists now, at least in So. California, have a digital scanner called iTero. It takes a digital 3D scan of your teeth, and they send it to Invisalign, so you get your trays faster and no putty mess or allergy issues. HTH
