Influencers and Hermes

I believe the use of "dupe" in this context originally came from the beauty and skincare reddit forums, which meant a product that is similar in function and/or ingredients to a more expensive, usually high-end product. Like Nivea cream is a dupe for Crème de La Mer, or Missha Night Repair Ampoule is a dupe for Estee Lauder ANR, to name a few. And then the concept of word reached tech and fashion communities.

So the word itself is not really a made-up influencer word, and doesn't necessarily mean fake.
I’ve heard the makeup/fragrance community use the word dupe in this context. but idk if this actually translates into luxe handbags. I think these are “inspired” items. like the ysl sac de jour is to the birkin or steve madden hayden sandal is to the oran.

Indian docs are a dime a dozen, especially Internal Med....certainly not the highest income potential or specialty. So either, the hubby has a side hustle or family money; hence, the speculation she allegedly resells the "Quota Bait". Not exactly a hedge fund manager living!

Context on Indian culture- its loud and elitist. Everything has to be over the top..house, car, wedding, and especially jewelry...aka her infamous gaudy ring. Its not uncommon in our culture. We tend to hoard jewelry in the safe. Our culture is extremely judgmental: always "keeping up with the Joneses", so to speak. Everything Bollywood all the time!

Us Indians are also extremely frugal..we will fly like Spirit and Frontier (not me lol) and live in McMansions. Hence..she flew Air India 1st class..not expensive at all and I believe also British Airways business class..which is bottom of the barrel..yet to the average outsider it seems "rich". Not exactly Emirates 1st class or a private jet!!!!
I am sorry but you have decided to brand an entire nation based on your perception of a certain individual ..I found it quite offensive. Since the moderators have decided your post doesn’t break any rules I thought I would respond publicly.

Flying Air India, but buys a Hermès desk...priorities! LoL!!! Like most influencers she most likely sells her items including her bags...kinda tacky to be advertising resales Hermès while buying Hermès. Just like Erica..advertising her cheapo jewelry line while buying 1 Hermès ring she can afford thru the former SA turned influencer so she can score a mini K for her YT channel. What people don't realize is that there is a HUGE difference in Influencers vs. Wealthy. Influencers show what they want..Wealthy don't need to show anything..they just use their status to create a business aka Sofia Richie.
I agree !

My store (in the US) finally have some Bs and Ks on display for guests to try on. My SA told me that they don’t allow people filming themselves holding the bags. Maybe they’re trying to avoid folks posting on YouTube that they got a bag from the store? :P
As they should! Too many folks on social media….have lie and acted like they were offered a bags . Getting dress to the 9’s . To take a pic and upload to social media for fame, likes & validation! It actually very sad

Seeing lots of unnecessary drama stemming from this thread!
If you have an issue please keep it off the forum, and PM the member or a mod instead; complaining off topic or ranting about other threads is causing more drama.
The spirit of this thread isn't to drag others, some of the influencers are, or could be your fellow members here, so be kind. Always be respectful and keep your posts on topic and clean.
Finally, feel free to scroll by this thread, it's not required reading

I don't agree. An inspired bag is not a fake bag. But this is off-topic for this thread, so this is my last comment on the topic.
FWIW I don't think it's off topic. Most people had never heard the word "dupe" before influencers started spouting it. Where you choose to spend your money is entirely up to you. I'm not buying a "dupe" off Amazon. Brands work too hard to establish themselves for replicas pushed into fast fashion by these people paid by the click. We can agree to disagree! :flowers:

I don’t follow influencers, I need no influencing! Lol
First time I heard dupe was probably 10 years ago, long before influencers, and in the context of discontinued lipstick colors for example. So if Mac had a blue pink and discontinued it, Nara blue pink is the “dupe” for example. I don’t associate it with fakes or replicas per se

I am not suggesting you or anyone else to buy dupes. Not sure how you arrived at that conclusion. I was just making the distinction between dupe and replica. That’s all.

She probably used the word for marketing reasons, to bring attention to the video. If you've seen an actual MK you know the one in the video wouldn't pass. In the video description she describes it as a Mini Kelly lookalike, next to the Etsy link.
now we’re splitting hairs with adding lookalike to dupe/replica/fake/knockoff/bootleg/phony/inauthentic/etc.

I’ve seen women here make a cardboard model of different size birkins to see what works for them. buying a fake is unacceptable. furthermore, this is probably not the best forum to show support for fakes.

I was reminded of a Kuwaiti influencer who supposedly has a large collection of Hermes bags, including a Himalayan and various exotic ones. She even has an entire room to store them. However, her home gets flooded every year when it rains, and she has not made any attempt to repair it or move to a different house. It makes you question the true extent of their wealth.
Just as well it doesn't rain a great deal in Kuwait
