Influencers and Hermes

There is a lady in Australia who purchased a red B30 from a pre-loved market. then she proceeds to complain about it all the time. this makes me so sad to see people getting influenced by fomo and not truly loving the pieces -buying a birkin just to say that they have one in their collection.

more recently, same lady goes and buys a phony black mini k “to try it out”, meanwhile she has a beautiful mini lady dior and other small black bags in her closet.

I know exactly who you are talking about. Her black mini Kelly video made me realise the MK is not for me though.

If it's who I think it is, IMO she has some serious issues. All she cares about is shopping for high end and dressing head to toe in designer. Goes to Paris and Hawaii but doesn't care about sightseeing or anything but shopping. Spends hundreds of thousands of dollars a year but doesn't bother to get her teeth fixed. I just can't with her.
I was reminded of a Kuwaiti influencer who supposedly has a large collection of Hermes bags, including a Himalayan and various exotic ones. She even has an entire room to store them. However, her home gets flooded every year when it rains, and she has not made any attempt to repair it or move to a different house. It makes you question the true extent of their wealth.

Caitlyn P. Although I appreciate that she was forthcoming about the mini Kelly being fake, I just don't understand going through the trouble of buying a replica for the purpose of “testing out” before purchasing the authentic. especially if you have a luxury YT.

I think it was a dupe, not a replica. And actually it makes sense for a very expensive bag that may or may not work for her, to try out a dupe first.

I was only stating my opinion regarding a luxury YT buying a phony bag for whatever reason. I don't mean it to be offensive to anyone or judgmental.

in her video she said it was a fake, but would you kindly explain what the difference is between a dupe and replica?

This is getting off topic, but I can reply. A replica is pretending to be the real thing, with the brand stampings and exact design, dimensions, etc. It is what we'd call counterfeit. A dupe is just an imitation or "inspired by", made by a legitimate brand.

I can't think of anything less significant in my life than to watch a stranger opening a box with a bag in it. Even beauty YouTubers are doing it, I am so turned off.

I guess it's good if there's no chance of seeing one IRL before ordering online - reseller or H, even then, such a gamble with an H bag
I agree. I’ve never watched “an influencer“ in my 73 years. Maybe I‘ve never watched an influencer because I’m 73. Idk. I doubt I have much, if anything, in common with these young people. I’ve only heard of their existence here. TPF is the only social media I’m on….at least I think of it as social media. I tried Facebook about 10 years ago and lasted one week.
I’m boring…..but the post above mine defines a replica vs a dupe, and I’m glade to know the difference. Thank you, @BreakfastCake.

You may be surprised to learn that there are influencers of all ages on Insta, YouTube, TikTok etc. Most I follow are much older than me (and have great experiences to share) but not necessarily about H.

I need to pay attention when she travels again to India. Her husband is an internal medicine doctor and her circle of friends throw these Royal weddings. She did have a “business” (the capes for B’s) but not sure how successful that was since I haven’t seen more of it. Her spending is not over the top like these other influencers. I think she lost credibility when she started giving advice about the Hermes appointment system. Few days ago she was talking about Hermes baits and showed a bunch of Hermes lipsticks. Maybe she forgot that she received as an Hermes gift a box full of lipsticks.

Internal Medicine Doctor. LOL. This explains it all!

Going to break it down for all the non Indians (I write this as a Indian and as a Mrs. MD ).

Listen , Indian docs are a dime a dozen, especially Internal Med....certainly not the highest income potential or specialty. So either, the hubby has a side hustle or family money; hence, the speculation she allegedly resells the "Quota Bait". Not exactly a hedge fund manager living! LoL. Her friend is Caviar & Chèvre, also a Chicago wealthy surburb reseller...so would it be that far fetch speculation that she resells her bait to her (especially since she barely shows any of it..only selectively choosing here and there)?

Context on Indian culture- its loud and elitist. Everything has to be over the top..house, car, wedding, and especially jewelry...aka her infamous gaudy ring. Its not uncommon in our culture. We tend to hoard jewelry in the safe. Our culture is extremely judgmental: always "keeping up with the Joneses", so to speak. Everything Bollywood all the time!

Us Indians are also extremely frugal..we will fly like Spirit and Frontier (not me lol) and live in McMansions. Hence..she flew Air India 1st class..not expensive at all and I believe also British Airways business class..which is bottom of the barrel..yet to the average outsider it seems "rich". Not exactly Emirates 1st class or a private jet!!!!

Spending pattern- Buying a non exotic quota bag (I was also offered one with a fraction of what she spends) along with furniture will help elevate your "VIP" status. Its very simple..just buy crap that is expensive. Notice she doesn't shop at the Chicago store anymore...mainly NYC & Paris. For the multiple bags..you just need to ********** a different name/accounts(hubby/ parents/ relatives/
..pets lol). In Paris she most likely dropped major $$ in fine jewellery to be a VIP. Did anyone else notice when she wrote a post on her appointment experience in Paris December (a while ago)..she stayed at The Crillon and got a tour of the rooftop..she said the SA mentioned she was ********..well 1) How did you get the appt? 2) How did the SA know your Insta personality?! Someone please correct if me I am wrong..but she left a lot of details out! I had read on TPF somewhere that Crillon used to offer an "experience" where they would give you a tour of the FSH rooftop. Idk if thats true or not!

At the end of the day with Influencers, is that they show what they want to show to create a fantasy and escapism for their audience. Additionally, in the case for luxury handbag influencers, if they don't continuously keep showing Hermès in their feed, the audience will lose interest, including the Insta/Tik Tock algorithm. Also, take into account WHO is the audience? Is it an average person from the USA..then yes it seems shes "rich". Or is it from Singapore, Dubai or Tokyo (where the standard of living higher)..then it maynot see that big of a deal?

Advertising resellers while buying brand new handbags from the boutique..very cheap..just like EGW with her cheapo jewelry line. Its all about making money from advertising.

At the end of the day she is running a business targeted towards a certain audience...which all of us can do with a hubby, a high credit card limit, and social media.

Who is this influencer/blogger in question? As a fellow Indian, I am super curious lol. Can someone DM me please?

They are both fakes. "dupe" is a made up influencer word to make people feel better about purchasing said fakes :hrmm:
Duplicate= Replicate
I believe the use of "dupe" in this context originally came from the beauty and skincare reddit forums, which meant a product that is similar in function and/or ingredients to a more expensive, usually high-end product. Like Nivea cream is a dupe for Crème de La Mer, or Missha Night Repair Ampoule is a dupe for Estee Lauder ANR, to name a few. And then the concept of word reached tech and fashion communities.

So the word itself is not really a made-up influencer word, and doesn't necessarily mean fake.

They are 2 distinctive things to me.

A “dupe” is the type of bags you’d find at Target or Zara. A person who’s into handbags would recognize the design “inspirations”, but a layperson would just think that it’s a Target or Zara bag.

A “fake” is a bag that has the logo and designer name. A layperson would think the bag is actually from said designer.
