I'm Indian and all my jewelry is 22kt or 24kt gold. I just got married in April so all of my presents were just gold, gold, and more gold. The reason why our gold has more of a yellow color is basically because it's more pure and we don't mix our gold with silver. If I show my mother something out of 14kt or 18kt gold she swears it's copper. LoL. I should post pics of my jewerly so you guys can take a look.

Oh yes, especially if you see the Baht gold jewelries beside the more common 14K- 18K gold ones you will realize why it is said that gold "glitters." I was with someone in a jewelry store and pointing out to her the Baht gold jewelries and she said they're "too shiny." LOL

manila!!! your post makes me more and morrrreeeeee freakin nervous to go home lol! my bf of 3 years just popped the q and now what was supposed to be a cute little party has turned into a huge 300+ person ordeal at the ritz carlton lol! LOL!....don't freak out (and btw...i LOVE the peacock theme...have ur mom bring peacock feathers from india as a centerpiece for your table {modern cubic vases with exquisite peacock feathers and a costume jewelry piece of jewelry at the bottom (like a tika or janjar}).....ur a lucky girl having ur party at the ritz....

if i may ask, have u decided on a wedding venue? (there is this AWESOME place in Fords, NJ (close to Edison) called Royal Alberts Palace where its like a Udaipur palace)

one last thought, make sure u go ALL OUT for your wedding, u deserve it after law school!!!

Haha thats so funny...my mom DID bring back a CRAP LOAD of peacock feathers lol! (im talking 300 large ones and then small ones lol! AND each invitation had a peacock feather! lol) maybe i can attach a pic!

because i wanted to use them in flower vases and she had turquoise table runners made with the peacock zardosi emblem on them and the main head table will have red runners...soo everything will match my outifit!! I didnt think about having costume jewlery in the vases!! man that would have been cute! maybe i can get my Kaka to bring some!!!

THanks...i didnt know where i wanted to have it but after looking at all the venues, i just FELL IN LOVE with the decor at the ritz! my best friend so hates the idea because she thinks its too "old" but i just loveeeeeeeeeee the feel of the place!!!

That place is nj sounds soo nice! but i live in arizona :( might be to far for everyone to go ;) lol! It's so funny because i would so just want to have my wedding at a mandir and have a nice reception...but yeah do u THINK that would happen? lol! moms!!!

this is just the upper half of the invite...it had a small peacock feather and had like a decorative item holding it :) my mom picked it out...im telling u shes crazy haha i love her!!!

Ohhh, I love going to Indian parties (I'm also Indian haha, if my name doesn't already give that away), because nowhere else can you see such an explosion of color and fun! The NYE party the OP posted about is very typical of most parties I've been too... lots of ladies like breaking out the big guns haha (jewelry wise), and beautiful clothing for parties. :p As others have said, the gold you see is often 22K gold, and 18K gold if there are diamonds, etc., because the higher 22K weight can't support the diamonds. I forgot what the term is for this (I know the indian word, but not the american translation haha), but oftentimes earrings are so heavy that they are supported by a gold "string" that goes above the ear and around the back... so that's probably what you saw on some ladies.

Between my mom and I, we have two closets and a few armoires full of Indian clothes, and the funny thing is, no one likes wearing the same outfit twice, which is a pretty expensive habit haha. :p

manila - I loved Devdas... amazing acting and Madhuri and Aish looked gorgeous (plus I love Shah Rukh haha)! I haven't seen an Indian movie in forever!

luvednotspoiled - I'm sure you'll look stunning for your engagment party... I can't even begin to imagine the amount of planning both the engagement party and the wedding will require! :sweatdrop: I love Manish Malhotra's designs too, and there are a few others I can't think of off the top of my head... there's a new place with designs by Payal Singhal that opened up in desi-land, aka Edison, NJ that my mom's friend was telling me about! First, my b/f needs to propose haha... and everything will be more complicated by the fact that he's Malu and I'm Guju. Are you planning to wear something traditional (as in red/gold/white or a variation of that) for your wedding? :smile1:

O.M.G.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your mom has exquisite taste. i always remember my family getting the typical wedding cards made out of like clothy, recycley, blah paper. your's looks like a million bucks!

so r u having like ur reception at the ritz or an engagement party? and what r u wearing for ur wedding (i would have my wedding at the mandir too!...only because i want my immediate family there WITH me when i get married....if its a big wedding your family (and the grooms side) is always going around saying the hi and hello and thank you for coming instead of actually being there for the ritual/special moments.)

IMO an indian bride should stick to the white and marron (and maybe another color...blue/green looks really nice with those two) color scheme for the wedding cloths. i just absolutely cringe when i see the brides that wear the BIGGEST necklace and the HEAVIEST saree/choli for their wedding. i LOVE a plain (or with small butis) white (not creme) saree with a deep/vivid/eyecatching/blood red border with zardosi and antique gold thread work on it (about 3-5 inches wide) with a medium heavy pallo. it just looks SOOOOO sophisticated and elegant and it also brings focus to YOU instead of the outfit. [oh....and the head shouldnt be covered ALL the way and it shouldn't NOT be covered either......its tradition....lol...the bride should like do a low bun at the nap of the head and have the hairstylist cover ONLY the bun]...

OMG...HAVE A LOOK AT THIS...i just googled indian wedding and this came up:

u can add a little of the peacock colors in there and have peacock feathers come out from the top!!!

Manila!! UR the cutest thing ever! lol! i think youre more excited than i am! lol!! It's just an engagement party haha but i guess her theory was, if youre going to do it, do it right and the sad thing is that compared to some family friends, my event is just normal LOL!

Ok lets try to answer all these q's!...my invites are georgy! i originally wanted something dark pink and gold, but this works! :) That was my original color scheme, but my mom didnt like an outfit that matched that so nowwwww i have maroon and turquose with antique gold work! :)

I have NO idea what to wear for the wedding...lol! You sound like my family, i just got engaged!!! lol let me breath hahaha ;) No im guju so i will have the white panater...and then the guys side gets me the red/maroon outfit.....im more of a freak so i would have some color in there, not really sure WHAT, but something that is not crazy, but something thats eyepopping u know? my friends make fun of be because they know im going to go crazy for my weddint and they claim to want to come just to see that! haha i actually saw this one outfit in india...ALL of the work on the outfit was made out of REAL gold and there were REAL diamonds and REAL pearls....omg was it SO damn hot!! I mean the dimonds and pearls werent the greatest but whatever it was CRAZY! I guess people get the outfits and then they melt the gold and reset the diamonds.pearls into a set!

btw LOVE the cake! but i kind of dont want a cake at the engagement party...i want to save SOMETHING for the wedding u know! like i do NOT want a first dance or cake or party favors or any of that stuff!! i feel like this a mini wedding lol! today i was "put in my place" by some classmates, they seriously were like -- umm that is bigger than most weddings and more elaborate than i can ever imagine my wedding

yeah RIGHT THEN i figured out HOW MUCH i take for granted!!! crazy!

THANKS!! actually i think thats the reason i LOVE having it at places like the Ritz...all we had to do is walk in look at the venue, the chef already had a menu planned out...and thats about it! I know my centerpieces so they should be easy to do...and that's about it! lol! man i wish arizona had a few more nice places for desi clothes! kind of sucks!

Im guju tooooooooooo!!! How are ur parents taking it? any time soooooon? have you picked/seen rings yet?? omg im so excited for you lol!! man i miss ring shopping and all that fun stuff!!
