I'm not sure if this is good news or scary!

TPF may earn a commission from merchant affiliate
links, including eBay, Amazon, and others

Where did you hear or read that?

Although there have been complaints against A4U regarding poor communication, IMO for authentications, they're one of the best.

I agree, so far Authenticate4U have been very accurate.

And when you just think about the BS and unethical behavior that a few other authentication service owners and members have pulled here at tPF, I don't have any faith at all that Ebay's going to be able to figure out who are the honest ones and who are the incompetants, liars and cheats. Like everything else nowadays, it's all going to come down to plain and simple greed.

ETA - It sounds like a lot of the experienced posters at Ebay's Fashion Discussion Board are skeptical or downright negative too. Can't say I blame them.

I think that unless items undergoing authentication are shipped to the authenticators before going to the buyers then the whole thing is pointless are scammers can easily ship fakes after having an authentic item pass.

Unless buyers are prohibited from opening SNADs for authenticated items claiming non-authenticity, then the whole thing is questionable.

Unless buyers are required to ship these authenticated items back to the authenticator (in case of returns for whatever reason other than SNAD due to non-authenticity) rather than the seller, who can then verify that the returned item is the same as the one sent to the buyer, then I do not see much point in this.

Just my two cents.

Based on conversations I have had with some of the players in this area it's my guess they have teamed up with Entrupy and will be using the Entrupy device to authenticate the items physically.

How do you feel about that?

Personally, I can't imagine a computer being able to differentiate between 5-star fakes and genuine, issues where items might be "rule" breakers, i.e., authentic items but exceptions to what is often considered to be an "always-never" rule or quality vs. authenticity issues.

I have met Entrupy management and received a demo and an explanation. I am not convinced about the accuracy on Hermes bags. That is the only brand in which I am expert so I can't comment on how accurate the device is with the other brands.

Thanks. That's good that they were meeting with (at least some) experts.

Entrupy seems really interesting. So if I bought an old LV Speedy and cut it up and resewed it to generally resemble a makeup pouch (as an example) Entrupy would grade that as an authentic LV makeup pouch? As an outsider, it seems like it would be far too easy to get materials of similar enough substance to fool such a device.

That's what's scary if that's who they're depending on, even if Entrupy is one of several.

Physical inspection adds days to a final sale, maybe a week when you take into account having to ship the bag back and forth.

I was under the impression that eBays new service would be done by pictures.

I read their statement and it talks about "the item" being reviewed and being passed by authenticators before delivery. It does not mention anything about pictures of the item being reviewed. That is what made me think of Entrupy. I suppose the seller would to ship the bag to eBay who would ship to the buyer after passing it, like Vestiaire do. Agree it adds time to the turnaround. However it does say a network of professional authenticators so hopefully I am wrong about Entrupy. I am no more informed than anyone else at this stage. We will see.

You are correct, it doesn't state by pictures. I was reading into it. I've got so many questions about this new eBay service.
