Interesting. I read that they changed from “made in New York City, USA” to “Made in USA” when they started overseas manufacturing in the mid-70s.
I don't know where you read that but it was wrong.

They made that change when they started manufacturing in other locations than New York City. At first the other location was still in the US. If you'll read the creed of the bag you posted, it says "made in USA." They didn't switch to overseas manufacturing for bags until the 90s. Those creeds will show the location of manufacture.

The mid to late 70s is when they first started using creeds. Before that there weren't any creeds in bags, just a Coach or Bonnie Cashin label.

Hi, hoping you can help identify this NYC Coach bag. There’s a creed, but no serial number.

Wait for the experts to chime in (which isn't me!)...however, I wanted to share a listing for what looks like the same style bag.

Vintage Coach Bonnie Cashin Slim Clutch / Portfolio / School Bag https://www.etsy.com/listing/1706370383/vintage-coach-bonnie-cashin-slim-clutch (doesn't look like they know the official name, either.)
School bag seems right.

What I've noticed about the school bag is that there is a seam in front (beneath the turnlock)... MrsBookGuy's bag doesn't have that!

I'm not seeing a seam in the front in my catalog picture. I've never seen one of these IRL.
There are no rings on the sides for a shoulder strap. Did they make different versions?
I'm thinking because yours is pre serial number, it could be an early version.

I feel like this is literally the most obvious question to be asking, but if I'm trying to figure out which shade of white/not white my vintage bag is, and the serial code indicates that it was produced in 1996, should I be looking at 1996 catalogues or 1997?

I believe it took about 3 months from production to make to stores, so if early in 1996, look at 1996 catalogs and later look at early 1997 catalogs. At that time, bone was a popular nonwhite color. Remember not every color made it into the catalogs. 1997 was the first year they had a website so you could also look on the wayback.

Thank you! It's a Sonoma Satchel produced in March of 1996, so I think the color is parchment rather than bone. Now I just need to figure out a decent replacement shoulder strap.
