Hello, I’m new here. I bought this coach crossbody bag as a graduation present to myself from a coach dealer in 1976. It’s been through a lot, and still in pretty good condition, I haven’t carried it for 15 years and it need some good moisturizer. I’d like to carry it again. I can’t find any information on it. Because it’s a 1970 era vintage, it has the actual serial number. Any idea of the style? I sent it in to coach for a free recondition about 20years ago and they put all new cording on…..back when they still did that. Purchased in East Lansing MI.

The style doesn't appear in my catalogs until Summer 1986, and the page says it's a "NEW" style. It's a genuine Companion Bag, style 9300.

Research indicates that Coach was't even using any kind of stamped serial number in 1976, and my earlier catalogs from 1976, 1979, and 1981 through 1985 don't include that style. If you're basing the date on some online or Facebook Groups "guide", several of the most often-quoted ones are off in their estimated dates by as much as 10 years. PLEASE don't depend on them for any kind of accurate information!

The Salearea Coach Guides posted here at tPF have accurate information on dating the detail changes in Coach bags, creeds and serial numbers. Some of the older URL links don't work any more because various sites like Ebay have removed pages or features or changed forum titles, but the dates are accurate:

Yes, thank you so much for the reply. Hyacinth, that is definitely my bag, but in reading the print, it says it is updated from the basic bag. I definitely bought my bag, new, from a high-end jewelry and leather goods store. It was called Lieberman‘s, and East Lansing. And I bought it as a college graduation gift to myself in 1976. It says this new updated companion bag holds more than the basic bag so I wonder if mine was just a little smaller than the one shown in the picture you sent. I’m not sure why they are saying there are no serial numbers prior to that, because I was reading on another coach website that there were specific serial numbers prior to 1980 or something like that. Anyway, I’m glad you found the picture of the bag for me. If anyone else has some information on it, I would be delighted. I still have the original sales tag for it and at the time it was $108. When I sent it back to coach about 15 or so years ago, they had no trouble verifying and authenticating it, and did a beautiful job of re-cording the edges

The difference between the bag in the photos you posted and the Basic Bag is that the Basic Bag doesn't have a divided outside pocket. It goes back to at least the 1970s and was called a Zippered Clutch back then but has always been style number 9455. Usually when Coach changes visible or integral details on a bag they also change the style number.

Here are style 9455 Zippered Clutch/Basic Bags through the years right from the catalogs, click on the thumbnails to enlarge:

You said: "I’m not sure why they are saying there are no serial numbers prior to that, because I was reading on another coach website that there were specific serial numbers prior to 1980 or something like that."
Please read what I said about inaccurate Coach guides with dates that are years off. You apparently found one of them.

You can believe me or not but I'm showing you the facts as recorded in Coach's catalogs AND based on my OWN research into coach dates over several years, not on some poorly researched or not-researched-at-all "guide" that's been Copied And Pasted from another guide that's been Copied and Pasted from yet another guide and on and on and on.

Regarding your statement on the price, please notice that the Basic Bag inthe 1986 catalog was $90. There is no way it would have been $108 in 1976.The Companion Bag was $102. Coach only raises prices year to year. They almost never reduce them.
Here are the 1987 Holiday (end-of-year) catalog prices for both bags on facing pages of the same catalog - $98 for the Basic Bag $116 for your Companion Bag:

You also said "When I sent it back to coach about 15 or so years ago, they had no trouble verifying and authenticating it..."
Why should they? It's a genuine Coach, which I've already said in the second sentence of my post when I authenticated and identified it.. - "It's a genuine Companion Bag, style 9300", and it would have been made in 1986 or 1987. Maybe you might want to read my reply again. The only reason I even brought up the Basic Bag is because that's the only style similar to your bag that was available in 1976 or anywhere close to it. The bag in your photos was not made in 1976.

MORE OPINIONS ARE WELCOME.

I am curious, does the receipt list any info about the bag? It’s neat that you have the original paperwork. Those were the days, when Coach would refurbish the piping on the bag! In the Club house forum, there is the Rehab thread with a lot of good info on restoring the vintage bags!

Hi all!

My first post so please be kind :) I'm a lover of vintage leather bags and was directed here for this big guy. Thrifted for $25 and never seen another coach like it. Thoughts? Hello, I have run into a conundrum with two nearly identical Coach bags. They are the Legacy Hobo (?) bags # 9591 and 9942. The 9342 is slightly smaller than the other, but very close. Other details are the same as far as I can tell. I have found "Zoe small Legacy West Hobo" attached to both on line, but these are not from official sites and the list of names I have does not include them. Here are some pics:
