I want to sell my engagement ring :(

There are some sites out there that can get you what it's worth...You just have to do a little research. They clean, polish and repair the ring before selling it and you get a good amount for the ring. I am not sure how the ownership thing works but if they gave you the ring it should be yours. I have never heard otherwise. It would be like someone gave you a house warming gift and you move or he bought you clothing o you have to give that back etc..Do you have to give those gifts back... it was a gift but I guess every state is different. It was a gift given to you. I could go on about this but I guess you should find out what your states rules and regs are.

Sorry I digressed. Check around online though there are a few sites that can help you get what it's worth. :-)

It sounds like the OP is in the UK (she posted the price in sterling) and there is no requirement for her to return the ring. Engagement rings are presumed to be an absolute gift (unless there was an implied or express condition that the ring should be returned if the marriage did not take place as you might find with family heirlooms).

Where can I sell a large (4.5 carat tw) diamond ring that I inherited? It has beautiful diamonds but not my style. I don’t know where to start. Also, I have an appraisal on the ring. I know I won’t get anywhere near the value on the appraisal. What’s a good rule of thumb on sell price? 50% of value?

My aunt gave me her diamond ring and band from a failed marriage. The fact that she passed it on to me had meaning to me and our relationship (even if it was from her failed marriage). I love my aunt, so I had the diamond set into a necklace my husband gave me. Could you reset the diamonds into a piece of jewelry you like? You would be lucky to get 50%. I've tried to resell diamonds--pawn shops, antique jewelry stores, contemporary jewelry stores. In my experience, it's better to reset them or pass them on to another family member.

Unfortunately, I need the money. We are adopting our second child and money from the sale of the ring could go along way to paying fees. If I can’t sell for a reasonable amount, I’ll keep it and use stones for a different setting.

Congratulations on expanding your family! The only times I have heard of folks getting around 50% or more for jewelry is through private sale (a friend, a family member, etc.) Good luck finding the ring a new home!

What are you hoping to get for it and when you say 4.5 tw are you referring to one stone or multiple stones in a setting?
Does it have a certificate from GIA or similar? If so, what date is on it?

I'm afraid that a ring for that price is going to be a hard to sell item.
I have no idea where you could go to sell this for anything close to its value.
Best of luck in your search!

Can you return it to the jeweler who sold it to you?

Is the stones especially noteworthy, or the maker? If so,you can try consigning to an auction house or estate jeweler.

There are a few online consignment shops with good reputations, as well as online markets if you want to try to sell it yourself

I really don’t know anything about the ring or what is the source of its value, but based on my experience in buying and selling and remaking jewelry, you can probably expect to get about 10% of the appraised value
