Congratulations. Truly. I understand why you did this. I’m going through the struggle now too. Some days I want to sell it all and go back to using regular bags. (That was my life before I found tPF in 2016). I want to sell it all because I find myself wanting ever more expensive bags. My price point has gone from $1500 to $2000 to $2500 to $4000. Now I think a $3000 bag is normal and I’m looking at $5000 bags regularly. It’s insane. It’s driving me crazy to be honest. I want to sell it all and be the way I was before 2016. But I also desperately want a Hermes bag. It’s like I have two different minds and I’m torn in two. I know if I get the Hermes bag I’ll want another......more, more, more. I know I won’t be satisfied with just one.

I applaud you for your strength. Be free!

Why are you describing me?:biggrin:

I think at some point we all go through the same feelings, except for the heirs or those who've always been rich. I'm also in that permanent internal paradox and I guess that's human nature which is never satisfied and always looks for new things, whether it's material or experience. I often feel so guilty about my carbon footprint (whether by buying things or travelling) and when I think about animals that died during the bags making!
How brave you are, good luck selling your bags and hope you find happiness and peace!

I love this post and totally relate -- thank you so much for sharing! I love TPF but I, too have been cutting back on my time here because sometimes the materialism stresses me out a bit. And that is NOT a judgement on anyone here -- I'm guilty of this myself! And I fully believe that everyone has the right to spend their disposable income on whatever they want -- more power to you!

But sometimes I see people who buy multiple bags from every single collection and I honestly wonder if they've even had a chance to use and enjoy the bags they bought from the previous collection, before buying more. Like how many bags does one person really need/can one personal really use in a day/month/year? :confused1:

I totally get that many people collect these bags, so they might not even purchase them to use them, but more to display like art, which is great if that is your thing.

But I do think we live in this time of overconsumption that's fed by social media, Instagram, YT, etc. where we *think* we constantly need to have the latest, greatest, newest trendiest item ... because others do, because it might sell out, etc. Like I always wonder if some of the IG Influencers I see genuinely love that $$$ designer bag they're flaunting, or if they only love it b/c everyone else has it and because they were gifted it for free and/or paid to promote it. There are many trending designer bags that I personally do not like, no matter how many people have them, but I'm realizing what big a role social media can play in dictating people's tastes.

The older I get (I'm in my early 30s), the less things I want to own. The idea of having a giant wardrobe or handbag collection honestly stresses me out! I don't think I'll ever be a true minimalist, but I am an aspiring one. I own 4 Chanel bags, but I only love and use two of them, so I will probably part with the other two soon. I have 2 Gucci bags that I also love and use regularly, so I'm keeping those. There is one other Chanel bag I would like to add to my collection, but after that, I think I'm done. I think five luxury bags is my personal limit ... I just don't want to own things I'm not using/don't truly love, and I also don't want to be super attached to anything to where I would be devastated if something happened to it.

It's also a bit hard for me to even justify owning a few luxury bags as I grew up poor and very conscious of money...even though I'm proud that I've worked hard to get to a place where I can afford a few luxe items, I still think about how much they cost and how many people live in poverty even in my own city., and how no one else in my family can afford such nice things even today. I don't feel guilty per se, but I am conscious of these things.

Anyway, all that to say that I totally relate to this and appreciate your bravery in posting! Maybe one day I will be strong enough to part with my entire collection. And please, no one think that I am judging -- I LOVE looking at everyone's collections and am so happy to be a part of this community. I fully support everyone's right to have a designer handbag collection as big or as small as you want. Just sharing my personal story. Thanks for reading!

Good for you! I honestly hate the way our society has become obsessed with consumerism. Large haul videos on YouTube are just so unnecessary, I’m sorry but it’s just wasteful. I can’t say that I am immune either, which annoys me at times for sure. I have way too many bags. I know that, and I really want to cut down on the number that I own, as I only use a fraction of what I own. I just bought my fave Chanel (black Trendy CC) and I have a few others that I absolutely love (Mini, camera case, Reissue) but I also find myself hanging onto others because they are useful, like a large Reissue camera bag, a black old medium Boy with ruthenium HW and a beat-up vintage tote. Does anyone else keep bags because they are useful?

Why wouldn't anyone keep bags that are useful?

If you eat meat, you don't have to feel bad about cows that died to make bags. The leather used is a byproduct of the meat industry. Those cows would have been killed whether or not the leather was to be used. By using the leather, they are being less wasteful.

I'm eating less meat as meat and dairy are among biggest contributors to climate change. I'm thinking about getting more designer bags in non-leather but it's hard to find nice ones, My Lady Dior in satin is one of the rare models that I find beautiful.

I would stay away from artificial leather as the production of that is bad for the environment. I think cork might be interesting.

Ohh good luck! Always follow your heart, I feel like that sometimes, I’ve noticed currently when I notice less privileged people, I say to myself as long, I’m humble, kind and don’t act like I’m better than anyone, I shouldn’t feel bad about having luxury things, because they genuinely make me happy! I can put on a simple pair of blue jeans, white t-shirt, pair of converse and my luxury handbag & it makes me feel so happy. I’ve downsize my collection, I only kept classics brands, I’m passionate about, Chanel, Hermes & LV those are my favourite brands. I don’t follow trends, I can watch others unboxing videos, but I don’t feel pressured to impulse buy anything because I know what I love and works for my lifestyle.

I cant do a middle path. I either do luxury or dont do at all. 1 is alwyas follwing with 2 ,3, 4 on and on..

Your quote made me think about my alternative to non-leather bags.
I don’t buy luxury bags at all, but I made the decision at one point many years ago to buy hand bags ( Coach, Vera Bradley, Tignanello for the most part ) second hand. That was my great stand about consumerism and the environment, lol. Then about 3 years ago I decided to see if I could find vintage leather Coach bags, of which I had a few. Well, a few dozen handbags later, lol . . . I have found some contemporary Coach second hand as well that I enjoy. I am in the midst of organizing my bags and working on deciding what stays and goes, but it is fun. I only bought one bag from a store in about the past 12 years . . .

As you know, most of my bag collection was obtained second hand as well. Mine wasn't a conscious decision to do something good for the planet but to save money and to get styles that were no longer available. Plus rehabbing is fun.
