I quit luxury. Selling all Chanel bags to get back to minimalist style. I feel overwhelmed.

I also read this entire thread with great interest. I think you summed my thoughts up perfectly. I have been thru similar ebbs and flows with buying and selling luxury bags and its worth figuring out if the selling has to do with your own feelings of (un)worthiness rather than a genuine shift in priorities or desire to pair down. The answer will typically come if you feel regret after selling or rush to fill the space with other/similar bags. :P No judgement, OP. Thats why I like the neutral advice of "don't sell unless you need the money".

Oh and *chefs kiss* to the inherent misogyny in women acquiring luxury handbags! It's absolutely ridiculous. Graham Stephan (popular finance YouTuber) made many comments about women buying "Coach" bags and yet he wears a $20k watch and drives a $100k vintage car along with a $50k Tesla. Give me a break!
I know, one is shallow and the other successful. It’s same thing with dating, one is gold digger and the other smart guy. The man expects a woman to do certain things in relationship and wants best possible choice for raising a family and when a woman looks for same its labeled. Im not a feminist at all,I like lady to be a lady and a gentleman to be a gentleman, however I pay for myself and as much as I give I expect back. Double standards are not flying in my space. I just hate seeing women being bullied to give up things that she loves or likes to appease …… passerby?!?!. Ladies, don’t buy for sake of buying or to fill holes … in the walls, buy to enhance and enjoy (life) . Personally I’m not a trendy type ( in my head I’m the trend, lol) and my purchases are never impulse buys. Once they enter my home they have no monetary value except that they are priceless to me. A lot of TPs have doubts regrets and guilty about their purchase and that should never be. I feel like most of them would never considered selling or downsizing if they were not …… idk … almost bullied into it? I come on this site to educate myself about products I’m considering, it’s a very informative and fun site but I was surprised to run into… guilt and almost shame. I mean no harm.

I feel that after owning a certain number of bags, I felt overwhelmed and I cannot give the same amount of love equally to all my bags. They become just "another" bag and not so precious anymore.

I have 5 designer bags in total (all Chanel) and I am still thinking of down sizing to 3. Which becomes a problem, as these 5 bags, each has its own merits and demerits. I realise there is no one perfect Chanel bag.

I keep a small collection of 4-5 bags. I have a 1 in 1 out rule so that I am recouping most if not all of my initial investment, which is part of why I stick to certain fashion houses. No disrespect to more affordable brands but I know people who have spent $1000s on bags that cost $100s. They rarely use most of them and can’t seem to get their money back in resell but continually by more. This doesn’t work for me. I buy what I like to use them not sit in my closet, take good care of them, and then eventually replace them once its time for something new. I have judgey people in my life over the labels I carry but they dont know I’m just recycling original purchase money (1 in 1 out). I am always wanting something new so when I do, I know I really want it if I’m willing to let go of something I already have. This also gives me a chance to try things I might usually not and has taught me so much about what really works for me. While its not a perfect system it allows me to have a manageable collection in which all pieces get some use and I can still try new things without the guilt that comes with the price tag.
That’s great idea! My husband mentioned “a 1 in 1 out rule” but it is hard to pick which one to let go.. Would you care to share you collection? I am really curious to see.

I heard somewhere in some motivational speech about the 10% rule:
Whatever U want to buy, if it is more than 10% of the money U have overall (savings etc.) u shouldn’t get it. It’s a decision making help:

Is something 100? Then I need to have 1.000 saved to buy this. the Chanel SLG I like cost 800€. 10% means I need to have 8.000€ saved to buy this. Etc.
Sounded very smart... perhaps it helps others too.

I'm sure lots of people can relate to this. For me, Chanel is so intimidating with its prices it seems ridiculous. I just don't feel comfortable spending that kind of money and using something so expensive frivolously, so i don't even want to get there. But I have had times in my life where I spend a lot of money getting things, and then regretting it or not wanting the items after. Nothing wrong with selling them later and moving on. In the end, you want to be happy and make the right choices for yourself.

I totally relate to this. I started collecting Chanel bags since 2007 and I reached 13 bags at some point. Then those were not special anymore and felt “wasteful”. So I sold most of them. Luckily I did not lose money since Chanel price has been continuously going up, but later when I wanted to buy the same bag back (black caviar classic), I could not pull the trigger because of the price increase. It used to be 2500 dollars now it is almost 10k. I have to justify its value four time harder even to myself. I finally bought it again this year and still not sure why I bought it again… but I can say that it is special for me. Long story short, I love TP and enjoy everyone’s beauty and opinion, but I think I am slowly leaving from luxury goods for good.

I am sharing your sentiments. I want my belongings to feel special to me and i already have all that I need. So I guess its high time for me to leave luxury goods for good too.

there are tonnes of brand out there that are stylish and feel luxury. Michael Kors and Coach are both inexpensive and functional. If you still want to go cheaper, you can always find lots of deals at stores like Ross

Vintage coach may be more durable than the new ones and …ack Michael Kors…just names. Those new bags don’t last long, plus you are paying for the name when there are no name bags cheaper and last as long.

The only reason why I keep my old Chanel bags even after moving to other brands like Loewe and Hermes, is because they are higher quality than the new ones.

of course, I get it. I have lots of chanel too, and yes quality is there, same as hermes, and LV. it depends on what you want. I could be wrong, your title of this thread suggests that you want to save money. So even if the MK or coach breaks down on you 10 times, still doesn't equal to the cost of 1 chanel. I keep telling myself that I buy these luxury brand because they retain value. I don't need extra cash at the moment, but when I need it, or if these bag stay in style when my daughter grows up, then it's all worth it
