I quit luxury. Selling all Chanel bags to get back to minimalist style. I feel overwhelmed.

I changed my mind yes. Please feel free to laugh at my decision bc what what I did the worst is posting this thread.

You are not alone in this believe me, so no reason to laugh, I am certain that many ladies on this forum are going through the same process as you are!
I have been having pretty big bag collection of Chanel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton...for many years and if I go back on this forum in several threads I will find my resolution to downsize or to stop buying etc. And I manage once in a while to downsize, but then again buy several new bags, sell some old ones, buy new once etc....
My preferences are changing, my opinions are changing and that is exactly as it should be, so enjoy your "new collection" till you again change your mind and start this process all over again:)

No laughing here, with what’s going on in the world we all have so many emotions, ups and downs. Many have redirected their attention and really think about life and what’s important. This can be good, I personally stopped going onto IG over a year ago to redirect my attention to my family. I’ve been reflecting and have thought about how crazy it is to spend so much on a bag.
I sold off a few and much prefer a smaller collection. I really put more thought into a bag before purchasing. I’m currently thinking of purchasing a Chanel CF but the price has me stuck so, I’m still on the fence. I have to get off the fence soon and make a decision cause Chanel keeps raising the price! I do enjoy having my luxury bags.
I hope your new bag brings you joy and happy memories, welcome back.

I only started my luxury journey late last year and I think I was trying to make up for lost time or something because I spent wayyy too much in such a short period of time and I did feel overwhelm at one point too.

Thankfully, keeping track of my expenses knocked me to my senses and I have since sold 3 bags that I never really used or liked anyway to kind of offset the amount that I had spent. I feel less guilty and do feel happier now that my luxury collection is more thought out and having a goal/target in mind of how much I want to see put aside for cash and investments helps too. If I don't hit my target, I don't buy any luxury.

I definitely think it's ok to spend on and have luxury items but maybe doing it with thought might make one happier about the purchase instead of guilt.

It's all good to go through changes, make decisions and come full circle again!
I'm a minimalist, I have five bags (ok six including a canvas tote), only three of which are luxury bags, and I enjoy this minimalist version of luxury. It makes me enjoy those bags all the more.
I am also always purging though with any of my possessions, and it is so feel-good that it can be addictive. Some mistakes are made and regrets happen, but that's life! Enjoy the phases, whatever they may be!

Thank you for kind words.:)

I always believed in a well rounded collection. I had so much fun thinking about the bags I would need to complete my collection. Big bag, small bag, handsfree crossbody, fancy tophandle, clutch in a dark winter colour, light summer colour, pop of colour, travelbag, backpack.

I was well on my way untill I realised that some things just don't work for me. After that I realised that there is no end all, be all. If I grow as a person, so does my style. Then I realised that there are still people who have one bag and are very content with that one bag and this is just a hobby.

Your collection is not stagnant and that is okay. It is your own collection so please do as you please

I keep a small collection of 4-5 bags. I have a 1 in 1 out rule so that I am recouping most if not all of my initial investment, which is part of why I stick to certain fashion houses. No disrespect to more affordable brands but I know people who have spent $1000s on bags that cost $100s. They rarely use most of them and can’t seem to get their money back in resell but continually by more. This doesn’t work for me. I buy what I like to use them not sit in my closet, take good care of them, and then eventually replace them once its time for something new. I have judgey people in my life over the labels I carry but they dont know I’m just recycling original purchase money (1 in 1 out). I am always wanting something new so when I do, I know I really want it if I’m willing to let go of something I already have. This also gives me a chance to try things I might usually not and has taught me so much about what really works for me. While its not a perfect system it allows me to have a manageable collection in which all pieces get some use and I can still try new things without the guilt that comes with the price tag.

Me too. I have quilt luxury recently. I love Chanel bags and collected only preloved Chanel bags. I have 5 of them. But I only use one. I am thinking of keeping 2 in total and selling the rest. But I like them all so its a dilemma!

I am still cracking my head over which 3 to sell.

l just spent pleasant evening reading through this whole tread. I’m wondering about couple things. I can understand if collecting crosses to obsessing, something needs to be done to hold back the “ beast’ in us. Otherwise … why is this any different that any other hobby?l know people who spend hundreds of thousands dollars yearly on riding horses, dressages, properties purchased solely to house those same hobbies. And nobody bats an eyelash about it. Pets we buy and we are not going to pretend that everyone is adopting them either. I live in a metropolitan area and there are purebreds everywhere. So, you going to feel guilty for shleping 5k bag but have no problem shleping second? Myself included in this mess, walked the other day in store to look at purebred cat …… 5 grands!!!!!! We can go deeper and we can find so many examples of this that can go forever .
Minimalistic lifestyle, hmmmmmw…… we can talk about it. I was born in to it raised with it and…… it’s fine. Back in my time was called having nothing (I wasn’t about not having money it was about not having choices in life). Sooo, been there done that done with it. Throughout years I accumulated decent collection of earthy possessions that make me happy the same way that someone gets happy with horses, cars, paintings, watches, plants ……… etc.etc. You get idea. The thing is I see no reason not to carry beautiful (whatever it is) while you do something fabulous for community. It doesn’t devalue your great work you do (hopefully) for others.
l would like to think that I will have another 30 plus years holding on and enjoying my possession and not really worry about value of the same. Another good saying is this; do not purchase things that will own you, purchase the things that you will own!!
Maybe just maybe the way I think about it is because I never considered selling any of my bags. Probably because I did all the classic in different brands , holding of for particular color and leather and I never did impulse buying. I’m not easily swayed by my SA and not worried about “good relationship “ with them. My mantra is if it’s meant to be will be if not, will not. I’m thinking that people are bending over to fit certain narrative and social norms that are imposed by who? Who makes rules what is acceptable and what is not?
Since when is shame to own quality items that are sometimes worn for generations? A lot of us intend to hand ours to the next generation, and if not so what? Ladies and gentlemen please be kind and mindful of others, however enjoy what you love with no guilt.

I also read this entire thread with great interest. I think you summed my thoughts up perfectly. I have been thru similar ebbs and flows with buying and selling luxury bags and its worth figuring out if the selling has to do with your own feelings of (un)worthiness rather than a genuine shift in priorities or desire to pair down. The answer will typically come if you feel regret after selling or rush to fill the space with other/similar bags. :p No judgement, OP. Thats why I like the neutral advice of "don't sell unless you need the money".

Oh and *chefs kiss* to the inherent misogyny in women acquiring luxury handbags! It's absolutely ridiculous. Graham Stephan (popular finance YouTuber) made many comments about women buying "Coach" bags and yet he wears a $20k watch and drives a $100k vintage car along with a $50k Tesla. Give me a break!
