Try and take the bag and get some sawdust and bury the bag in it. The saw dust will absore the oil out of the leather or at least most of it. Call a home depo type store or a lumber yard to get a lage quantity of clean sawdust.

Fur coats are cleaned with sawdust. might call a furrier and see if they can help you out or advise you.

I know that this might not be a good idea but before I would give up on it, I would tie it up in a pillow case and through it in the washing machine. i know gasp! If nothing else helps, I would wash it, what else do you have to lose? I bought a ergo belted hobo that smelled like cigarettes (even though the seller declared it was from a smoke free home) I couldn't get the smell out so I washed in the washing machine, hung it up to dry and then conditioned it with apple conditioner and it looks and smells great, didn't hurt it at all.

I swear BEBEPURSE, you are the Heloise of Handbags :D

Never in a million years would I have thought of that! I didn't realize that fur coats were cleaned with sawdust, either.

Haven't people talked about dipping leather bags in a gentle soap and water solution? I have not done it, but I would try to do something to get the oil out quickly. I would do a search for cleaning vintage bags -- I thought there was a thread about gentle washing.

I agree about the oil going rancid though -- anyone who has ever bought a too-large bottle of oil from Costco knows what it smells like when it goes bad.

REALLY? WOW!! :amazed: It would never occur to me to throw a leather bag in the wash. You are brave! Glad it worked out so well.

Llbue: Yes, I have done the same thing with my non leather handbags on delicate cycle
a bit of mild detergent. I allow the handbag to air dry and touch up the leather areas with Apple.

Also, I would have never image to use olive oil the scent and color alone. If only the buyer would have filed a claim if paid by paypal you are proctected. Well you live and you certainly do learn.

If you've got a junior high or high school nearby, call the wood shop teacher and see if they have any any sawdust. My husband is a shop teacher and he is always looking for someone to take sawdust off of his hands.

thanks for all the creative advice! :)

Sawdust and putting it in the wash -- and all the other creative solutions -- I will give it a go :)

If it doesn't work, I will simply hunt down another Ali on ebay someday and take better care of her.

In the meantime, I'm kind of all about my longchamp to and from work so I'm ok :)

Aaa if you are at the last resort I would first wait a month or so and see if the olive oil starts to stink etc.

If so, I would toss it in the washing machine and dryer on medium and see what comes out.
I washed and drier-dried a fabric and leather coach over the weekend and it came out just fine.

Your call!
