How to walk in high heels?

Keep your shoulders back and your back straight. Your center of gravity should be low, near your pelvis. You should definitely not "lurch" forward. Your foot should be securely into your forward step before the rest of your body comes forward.

When you walk in heels, you have to be aware that your lower body will move differently than when in flats. Loosen up your legs because your knees need to bent more and your hips need to swing more.

JUst wear them around the house a lot for practice and you will get the hang of it :)

Oh gosh, sounds like alot to remember :-/

handbag_whore, i'm totally in the same boat as you!! i find that platform heels work the best...
i don't have a tip for walking in them, but definitely keep a pair of flats in the car for when you head home and when you head over to the wedding. :)

Wear them around the house or outside for a couple of hours and you will notice any sore spots/rubbing that may occur. You will know what kind of blister preventative measures to take from there.

There is nothing worse than breaking in a brand new pair of heels when you are wearing them out to an event and they start killing!

Any tips for pain in the ball of the foot from walking in heels? That's the first place to kill me when i go over 3" :push:

I'd love to hear suggestions, too. I've tried every kind of gel insert and "miracle" insole that promises to banish foot pain. So far none of them work. I adore heels but only wear them once or twice a month. I'm usually fine in 3", but anything 4" and higher really makes the ball of my foot burn after standing for more than about ten minutes. I look around and see other women standing in similar height shoes who seem to feel no pain and I wonder what's wrong with me!

I used to live in flat shoes as well, but now I LOVE heels!! I believe the key is lots of practice. Just walk around in heels in ur own house :)
Same here. I'm 28 and didn't start wearing heels until I was 23 after having my first child. I can't add much to the advice already given but practice makes perfect, or damn near it anyway. I always break in and practice walking around the house in every new pair of heels I buy before taking them out in public. This will definitely help your walking, and build your confidence! SInce you're new at it, I hope you took a pair of flats to the wedding with you.;)

You arent alone. I own a few pairs of heels and only 1 pair dont hurt my feet. To be fair I rarely wear heels since I wear flats to work so maybe thats the problem. I am also limited because I have to have straps, any shoe without just falls straight off my foot.

ETA: I should mention that I also have a love hate relationship with flats too. I have 3 pairs of work shoes and not one of them is completely comfortable...its very frustrating!

I'm a sucker for punishment and own quite a few pairs of heels because I love them so much, most are 5" (but have a small platform of some sort) and a few are 4". I love the look and I can walk in them without issue, it's purely the pain in the ball of the foot that gets me, particularly at functions where I have to stand in one spot and talk to people. I nearly passed out once from the pain

Like you I have issues with flats, too. It's rare I find a shoe that is completely comfortable for me. I always have to break shoes in and go through an uncomfortable period with my heels being rubbed and so on.

I just love the look of heels and wear 4"-5" heels or higher all the time with jeans, dresses, skirts, everything!

I wear high heels to work everyday and on the weekends.
With lots of wearing, high heels have become second nature to me.

I have to admit though that many of my heels hurt a bit but I suffer for the look.

I'm fairly new to the shoe world, only 6 months new really and im finding it hard to break in my feet to heels.

I spent 5 years with my ex who was the same height as me so i never bothered much with heels but my current boyfriend is 6'4" (where im 5'6") and so my shoe interest blossomed :p

So my question is how do you get your feet used to walking in heels? do you use insoles, ball pads etc or try and walk more on the outside of your feet?

And do you tall women feel really huge when your in 5"+ heels? i know im not classed as particularly tall but sometimes i feel stupidly tall :(

If you can answer a few questions we might be able to help more.

What shoes are you wearing now?, as some designers and styles are better than others.
What type of heel and height is what you normally wear everyday?
What is your foot arch like? - have you ever done dance or ballet?

Those with a pronounced arch and who have or do dance/ballet generally find it easier to wear higher heels.

Trying to go straight to wearing 5" heels is not a good idea.

I am also fairly new to the world of heels, but my biggest problem is that my cheaper shoes wear out SUPER quick at the tips of the toes and i know they're not th best quality but they're really not that bad any where else!! Maybe it has something to do with the way I'm walking? any ideas????

@ ladysapphire the best thing i found was special bandaids especially for blisters they are great for breaking in new shoes, they were just from my local chemist! goodluck :)

I can help I think as I usually wear heels and most of my heels are 5 inches or taller. First invest in shoe's I have found (but not always) the more expensive the shoe the more comfortable again see the ( ) I stand at 5'4 with out heels and around 5'9 5'10 depending on which shoe I am wearing. Go get a good pair of inserts, I have found the gel one's are not good as they will not cushion when you walk (I use foot petals) you can get them from HSN and some of the higher end department stores. My feet usually hurt in the toe's and ball of my feet to work around this I will wear my new heels for short times to break them in or if I know I need to wear them for several hours I will take a pair I have already broken in a a back up. Some heels sadly are never going to be comfortable (I call those the go from the car to the table to the car) shoes others I can pretty much wear all day long. I have also found out that shoes made in Italy seem to be the most comfortable. Good luck finding your shoes make sure you try both shoes on and sometimes you will need to go up a half size..... Oh and one more thing I almost never go bare in heels unless they are a sandal heel I always wear a stocking or hose as protection and a corn pad (my family has a habit of getting corns)

PS. Also make sure to give your feet a break from time to time and switch to a wider shoe so you don't get bunions (the bone in the big toe) Your feet will love you
