How do you react when people ask how much your bag cost?

I'm from iran(tehran) :graucho: it's so common here, that people tell each other how much they make , or how much their stuff costs :D everyone tries to live a luxurious life on their own, even if they can't afford it. you can see normal people dress/wear make up like celebrities on the streets. though there are not so many official stores of famous brands here due to political issues, and everything is so expensive!( a low end bag here is around 100$ , and some stores like mango and zara sell their items five times more expensive than other countries! I saw a bag in zara store for 1000$ last year!which i think cost barely 200$),besides, there is a huge gap between people. some people are unbelievably rich, some can't even afford a nice meal. but even average people still pay a lot for everything so they can brag about it, for example cars are times more expensive than other countries, a regular bmw is atleast 100,000 $ here, but u see lots of people driving luxury cars on the streets.

That is really interesting. It sounds like the economy is good (because I know anything about economy lol), too bad there are still some people who are living in poverty.

The economy is actually terrible, the gap between people are so hugeee. but in my country most of the people care about their appearance a lot,(whether poor or rich) you can barely see anyone who is not nicely dressed up or not wearing any makeup. i don't know whether you know about the fact that we have to cover some parts of our hair and body(actually most of the people don't cover it all... eg we wear scarves that just covers a small part of the hair and it's mostly exposed :D)due to the forced laws by the government,or not. but, the women usually have their nails/hair done and try to pay as much as they can for the clothes, in despite of the fact that everything is insanely expensive here! actually we don't have many official brand stores or authentic items here which is a shame. but people still try to buy the best they can.

(sorry to go off the topic :D)

Which is why I stated "because I know anything blah blah blah". I typed that, thought "I don't think I'm write", and still posted :p

I try to get my clothes on clearance.... lol. My clothes usually end up chewed on by rabbits in the end, so I put my money into (other than the obvious necessities) purses, nail polish, and electronics. What different worlds.

This is so interesting Sarah. I wouldn't have guessed Iran in a million years.

Is this "normal," or do you think people act this way to take their minds off other serious political matters?

Totally off topic :), I have an Indian friend who told me people brag about how much they pay their Dr., trying to intimate that the Dr. who charges the most is the best Dr.!!

I love my bags. If its some I don't know, I'll tell them. But if its family or friends I just change the subject. If they really wanted to know that bad they can go to the shop and see for themselves.

I think most of the people in middle east are like that. Men are so obsessed w/ cars and women are from nail polish to shoes but no one will know how luxurious they dressed cuz they're wearing an abaya, they wont even show their hands or feet. And most of them think that they're better than you. :)

sorry it's totally off the topic but there are some pics of the way many people dress in public in iran, and in other places, we don't even wear that trench coat thing and the scarves either! :graucho:

Oh wow Iran is way too different from what the media projects, LOL! :D I used to work in Fujairah & Oman, I thought most people are alike from that side of the world. Rofl :D:D

I have to agree on the cultural differences. My in-laws are from the Middle East (not Iran-they're Arabic) and many would have no trouble asking or answering this kind of question. But of course, here in the US it's pretty rude in most situations.

:D no dear ... we are actually from a quite different nation/culture from arabic countries. we are Persian and from Aryan race ( no offense to arabic people, i'm just explaining the difference ;) ) and we are just forced to wear some scarves and as you see we try to remain stylish as much as we can ;)
