How do you fund your Hermes addiction?

Like a lot of people have said, it's astute saving and budgeting. I only have one Birkin at the moment and a few bracelets/scarves/Twillys, and now I'm saving up for a Kelly. I don't eat out, I rarely go out or drink alcohol, I don't drink coffee or live anywhere near a Starbucks, I don't have a driver's license so I don't have to worry about a car for the moment, and I walk to school, and I have no children or boyfriend to suck up my disposable income. :D

I am still in college at the moment so my parents fund pretty much my whole life, but they are extremely generous so long as I'm still in full-time education and work hard there. Most of the money they give me goes on H, other bags, travel and jewellery. Sometimes clothes because in the last few years I dropped from a size 9/10 to a size 5/6, so I had to replace pretty much my whole wardrobe, but it's once again overflowing so I guess I can stop buying now! I think really that unless you are exceptionally wealthy, it is a matter of keeping an eye on where your money is going and having a large proportion of your income be "discretionary" due to not having rent/mortgage/car payments/kid costs, etc.

Well, the answer DH and I have probably isn't a fun one to post. We paid ourselves forward... Lemme explain.

I wasn't a party girl in college, I worked full time after 18 to afford going. Took me a little while, but I got through it. No loans.

I paid my dues in crap jobs and internships for crap money lol so I worked 2nd jobs to be able to afford *going* to my crap jobs! And man, I paid dues there for a long time.

I kept debt low by limiting going out (being with friends, living within my means) and driving cars I could pay off, no payments.

I was responsible, and didn't take on any luxuries at that time. I mean noooooone. Not even a coach bag. I skipped the cute stuff and spent money on work clothes to project a good image.

Looking back, wow, I was so focused! I focused on knowing myself, enjoying what I was and had, and got my career on track... Otherwise pretty bohemian, I guess.

Then, once it started to pay off, I realized I COULD get H! I was lucky... Other than a bunch of utilitarian Prada, I discovered my fav brand early in my "it's about time" phase and so I have a well thought out collection.

I know and respect a dollar. That's why when I spend them on h you can bet I love and adore them.

Oh... And I still do all the things in that thread too... More moolah for H! LoL

Funding Hermes is an interesting question. DH and I both work, but we definitely come from different backgrounds. He grew up very modestly and I did not. So, it's a little balancing act on my part...but I work, so there is rarely a grunt...except for the day that I came home with A LOT of stuff. I definitely know that if I did not work, he would NOT be supportive of the H. I forgot to have that on my list of things for a potential DH...:roflmfao::roflmfao:

Life is short. Do what makes you happy with your money when it makes you happy, however shallow others might say it makes you. In my case, that includes trips to H! No-one ever got to their last day wishing they'd spent more time at toil (work?) and less time at pleasure (H!). If you earn it, spend it how you like and when you like.

Phew. Enough said. Can you tell my mother often wonders aloud why I spend so much on bags!?! My answer? Cause I can!

:p

I love what you said. It's the same with me. I worked really hard to get to where I am right now (which is a nice, comfy state in life), I didn't go out much and I just started buying luxury goods two years ago. Good thing I only bought 2 LV bags before I realized Hermes is the way to go. And good thing I realized this early on while I'm still relatively young.

My DH and I are also DINKs and both work very hard so we do treat ourselves but often remind each other how truly blessed we are.

I have a few rules that I do follow for my extravagant purchases (only you can decide what that is). First, I have to truly love it - you know the feeling - can't stop thinking about it, go back and look at it several times, consider all the ways in which you will wear/use it and it only gets better in your mind. Second, it must be timeless. I do not have enough money to buy things like this that will be out of style in one year or something I would only use a few times. I need to be certain I will have it for years to come and continue to love it just as much. Finally, my third rule - if its clothing or an accessory, it truly must make me look AND feel fantastic.

Do you have any rules? I would love to hear them

Wow, thanks for the responses everyone :) This also opened my eyes and helped me realize that not everone is just rich or buying an unnecessary amount of money from their cc (which would be a terrible thing to do. I will definitely be reading the tips thread

Thank you!

I sold almost my whole handbag collection on ebay  I don't work well I do I take care of my family (damn good at it) and hustle my two kids everywhere. I get a monthly allowance and manage to squirell away some for H every month but my last purchases have come close to 20k :wtf: and I turned 24k on ebay in three months so if there is a will there IS a way. And thankfully my loving husband of 20 years this year seems to really enjoy my purchases. Its funny to hear him say "Thats the best bag you've ever bought!" wooho!!
