Piaffe & Duchess Well Put!
PennyD Your right you don't have to contribute, if your not comfortable disclosing details to people then just don't. I don't think that you should be upset for someone asking or answering a question put on this board.

That fine.
For those who are uncomfortable with this question, just dont answer it.
Im not asking for your income tax statement info. lol.
I know this forum is for every handbag situation and since there are alot of people who flaunt there merchandise, why not ask.
This question was just to get an idea.
Specifically for Hermes, its like over 5,000 dollars to get a brand new bag.

thanks

I do it prudently.
My parents used to be wealthy. Till a financial crisis hit them. Everything we had - the big house, the impulse big-ticket purchases, all material comforts - we had to rebuild from scratch. I've learnt that anything and everything can be taken from you, no matter how cushy your life has been, no matter how far up you are on your high horse. I've always had expensive tastes, but due to my experience, I have only purchased what I can afford, and I spread my purchases, so no impulsive buys for me. If I put it on a credit card, I make sure that I can pay it off without incurring interest. With H, I would transfer cash to my credit card account before visiting the store, if it's a biggish-ticket item. And that also ensures you won't be caught in a situation of not having enough credit on your card, during payment. And I have kept to buying bags that cost within a month's salary, no more than $11K.

That fine.

I wonder also, I think it is human nature. If anyone asks me how much anything costs I say, I could tell you but I would have to kill you. (I say it with a laugh & then I totally change the subject).

^ these shoes are interesting to look at. I wonder how heavy these particular ones are. The ad only mentioned something like 'watch mens heads turn when you wear these shoes".......something like that.

I'm a 20 year old still in college, so getting my first Hermes was a HUGE decision for me. I got my first accessories (a compact Dogon wallet and a Ulysses GM) as birthday gifts from my BF (and his parents - we're both lucky enough to be only children lol). To get my first bag (a Lindy), I sold some of my other bags, including Chanel and Louis Vuitton. I decided that I wanted to invest in the quality of Hermes instead of having a plethora of various designer bags that I'm less likely to use. Now I have 1 Hermes, 2 Louis Vuittons, and 2 Chanels. All of my other bags are smaller, less expensive designers (Cole Haan, Coach, Tylie Malibu), which is a perfect selection for me!

I I think there was a post in BagSnob awhile ago about the invasion of the middle class (something like that) with respect to Hermes, and several people commented about the "poaching of luxury goods by the middle class." Anyway, I was kind of offended by those comments, because I'm not super rich but I love quality bags, so how am I poaching?

This is interesting. I remember someone posting that she was turned off Coach when her cleaning lady proudly showed her a Coach bag she had bought. Maybe that's how the super rich feel when they see us middle classers proudly showing off our H bags that we have scrimped and saved for......makes H not so special for the upper classes if the hoi polloi can afford to tote them around.

i'm not an hermes addict (a bag addict in general though) but i did go through a period (that probably coincided with my discovering tPF) when i bought my first hermes (ebay for below retail), my second hermes to go with my first hermes (again, ebay, below retail) and then soon after, my third and fourth (both from the boutique). i "afforded" them by using credit cards which i quickly realized was not "affording" them at all since i didn't have the means to pay them off. so i sold all but one and now only pay cash for luxury items. so a birkin is not in my near future but i'm ok with that -- it feels sooo much better to not be in debt! i now visit this board to live vicariously through others.
