How do you feel about buying preloved or vintage handbags?

Alas, not being a millionaire, and BEING a Bottega Veneta fan, I am doomed to pre-loved, unless I get that damned book written and become that elusive rich woman.

I have managed to purchase excellent 'like new' condition, pre-loved 'my' budget-friendly bags, and have no problem with them being owned before my hands touched them. Buying pre-loved allows me to have the finest bag in the world at a price I can generally afford.

I have learned to ask specific questions and if possible ask for specific photos of the pre-loved bags I buy, so I know I'm getting authentic, and I know I'm getting them in the condition I can be happy with.

There is never a problem with authenticity, because I do my homework and complete my due diligence and if in doubt, ask the BV ladies here for authentication.

You sound like a real expert indiaink!
Thank you for sharing your positive experiences!! Love BV by the way😉

Its kind of exciting to finally find a bag you love at a price point that you can afford especially if you've been searching for a while.
I also think of it as recycling since you're taking someone's bag rather than have it sit unloved in a closet and you can enjoy it.
I wouldn't buy a chanel at full price as I'd be too afraid of scratches, transfer, rain , etc and would be too scared to even carry it out. I rather buy a well worn but still usable one so I'm not too afraid of ruining it.
I understand where you are coming from collegechic, bags are ment to be loved and used and not just sit a closet!
Thanks for dropping by😊

It's a very personal decision and it can also vary depending on the brand and even the specific bag. These days I'm about even in terms of buying used versus new.

For me, it depends on if I think I'll truly have the bag for a long time. If I think that answer is yes, I'm inclined to buy new. If not, I'll look for it used.

Like India wrote, you have to know what to look for. Like down to stitches and ID tags and exact color names.

I sell my bags when I'm ready to move on. And so far, the buyers I have sold too have been really happy with their purchases. But like a good buyer, as a seller I know what details to include and I know and encourage lots and lots of questions from a potential buyer so he/she feels really confident.

You know I never thought of it this way, but that is so true. I never seem to have the same worries others have about messing it up or did I spend too much or what will people think of me spending $xyz on a bag. Buying pre-loved really takes care of a lot of that for me.
And I don't really worry about it being authentic because the lovely authenticators on tPF really seem to know their stuff.

I just bought a pre owned Prada saff and really struggled with the panic of it not being genuine and also staring it at it looking for faults - I was also concerned that the shape had softened.

I nearly sold it and bought a new one but I got such a great bargain (60 percent off as is three years old) and it's great overall condition - I now love it as I'm not scared of scratching it or putting too many things in it.

I feel like someone's road tested it for me - I'd say it took me a bit longer to 'bond' with the bag though :)

Thanks for sharing your story fleetHLS. And congrats on Prada Saffiano. I hope you'll enjoy her for many more years to come

preloved are my favorite type of bags, Ive bought a few things brand new and i get so worked up on getting it dirty or wearing it out. I think with preloved I am more likely to use the bag house its meant to be and I can even change it to fit me more.

It is a very personal decision ineed Grietje.
A few years ago i wouldn't even consider buying preloved, but after hearing from you all, i think i just might! Thanks!

I've bought two bags from Yoogi's Closet, one Valentino Catch and the other was an LV Montaigne satchel. Both are gorgeous. I admit I'm afraid of Ebay and wouldn't dare go there, but Yoogi's I trust completely. As others have already said, if it's a retired or discontinued model, pre-loved is the only way. Plus, as long as it's in near new condition, I kind of like the idea that my bag has a history. I just wish you could know a little about the previous owner.....nothing real personal, just a little background, sort of like if you were inheriting from a family member.

Exactly!! I stalk eBay. Once I get myself set on a style, the hunt is on. I have a hard time buying new now honestly, the thrill if the deal is part of the pleasure for me. I like my bag more knowing I paid $700 not $2500, it's silly but it makes me happy. Also when I took it to Mother's Day brunch and a kid put a sticky jelly print on the vachetta I didn't have a stroke, just a mild seizure. I try to do thorough homework which has lead to great results as far as authenticity. Now to figure out a way to make money off this talent. That and Pinterest.

eBay's a great place to find deals as long as you have it authenticated here first.

If you do, some good consignment stores are Malleries, Yoogi's Closet and Ann's Fabulous Finds. I got my Chanel and LV from Malleries -- the Chanel at 70% off retail and LV at 60% off.

Going the consignment way is a financially smart, ecologically sensible, long-term shrewd choice (I´ll take a well-preserved, sturdy LV Speedy from the ´80s any day over a much flimsier 2014 one), it shows individualistic, timeless style (b/c of the patina and other wear signs which make a vintage piece unique as opposed to the JIT clones and "bag du jour" plague) - and it´s sometimes the only choice when you´re after a discontinued piece.

It´s also a way to flip the bird at the outrageous 27% VAT where I live - a sport I can´t resist :giggles:
