How do we disinfect our handbags and wallets?

I have the same question - I have a silkin credit card wallet so wondering how to disinfect it because my dirty cc go in there. Yes, I've had an SA at Bally literally take my cc from my hands to run it through. Why?!

I live in a new epicentre for this awful virus. So, I am trying to basically drown the virus in soap and hot water every time I go outside. Some strong alcohol might also be involved  Involving external and internal applications. Huh.

But what do you do with your handbags and wallets? How do we disinfect them effectively? Any ideas? Would 80% rubbing alcohol be safe on Hermes leather?

Would a wipe down with a damp cloth with soap and water help? Or, baby wipe, Wet Ones (hand wipe)? Probably try a test spot first. Better than not washing and definitely not as harmful as alcohol.

I totally get where OP's coming from, I'd want to clean my bag, in general, anyway.

Even if she's currently not using her bag... maybe she used it before the outbreak got bad, or just wants to clean it because let's be honest, we don't clean our bags often!

I disinfect my phone everyday with 80% alcohol. Same for headphones. They are all still working at this point. Not sure if it lasts...My dogs' feet get wiped off every time we're outside. I spray-disinfect every door handle and every light switch. But who knows...I have just retired my croc wallets entirely. I guess, I will have to put my handbags in storage too...

Things are getting serious here. No face masks anywhere. I've just paid eur 30 for 1 liter rubbing alcohol (80%) disinfectant. On the other hand, parks are full, playgrounds are packed. Maybe the sauerkraut is keeping everyone healthy but I cannot rub it all over my Birkins, can I?

I definitely wouldn’t put alcohol on your exotics, but I did alcohol my pochette (just once and put it away, won’t be using it anymore) and it is well worn. I even alcohol’ed my grained Calvi, which did fine, until there was some weird Purell at the gas station that did strip the Calvi a bit matte. If that happens, just use leather conditioner, but then keep those items away like someone suggested. I have also just been using my credit card and wiping it with alcohol when I am done.

I’m not using any nice bags or wallets (including the Calvi). Good luck!

I definitely don’t think putting alcohol on your leather is a good idea! It could not only dry out the leather, but potentially strip whatever protective coating it might have and remove some color as well.
Theoretically, if you can’t avoid using it, the virus shouldn’t survive on non-living things for over 48hrs, so perhaps keeping it out of reach of other family members when not in use might be the most practical? this is in addition disinfecting your phone and other items you take out of your bag while outside like others have suggested.

Just leave your precious stuff at home. I don't know if you can wipe it with rubbing alcohol and not ruin the leather somehow. Maybe the next best option is to put it under the sun as it is a natural disinfectant?

MaryAndDogs,
First and foremost, please stay safe.
Leave your good stuff at home when you are out and about. Please stay home if it's feasible.

I would not put chemicals and or disinfectants on my Hermes. I would put items in the sun and have it work its magic. That being said, my Ostrich items are keeping safely in its cabinet. (Ostrich fades if put in direct sun light.)

This too will pass. (((Lots of Hugs)))

Just wash your hands & use hand sanitizer as much as possible. Don't use the disinfectant wipes on the leather. Let your precious purse sleeps in the closet for now, after all, they need to take a rest a little bit
Virus will only live on the surface for 3 days max, if I'm not mistaken. Not sure what kind of virus stays until 3 days?

I’ve been using a UVC machine to disinfect most of my personal belongings.

Hi HKsai, I also have a UVC wand that can be used for disinfection. However, I haven't tried to use UVC on Hermes leather. Would be interested to know if the UVC may breakdown down the leather or cause discoloration. Did you try to disinfect Hermes bag/purse using UVC? Thanks.

I’m sorry but I don’t own any Hermes bags but I just feel like never in your life should you use alcohol on your leather bags. Ever since the outbreak, I once got out of my minds and sprayed alcohol soaring on my Loewe puzzle, no harm was done to the bag but I feel like I have hurt my bag (FYI it still looks as good as new. So no, please don’t get too panic and do something you may regret afterwards.

my solution is to use my longchamp le pliage non stop these days. I don’t mind spraying disinfectant on it and I can stay away from viruses!

health comes first no matter what. Unless you are sure you will not go to anywhere crowded or dirty, it’s better to keep our beloved bags at home for now.

I assume that uvc would act like normal uvc from the sun. We expose our bags to the sun from time to time depending on where we live. I think it depends on how often we do it. I’ve never used it on hermes bags because it wouldn’t fit into the uvc machine that I bought. I have put LV canvas and empreinte leather pouches in there and I haven’t had any issues yet.

Quite frankly I don’t think we need to sanitize our bags. It’s always about hand washing. You should be washing your hands after being outside/touching your bag. For instance, our hair is way grosser than our handbags but I don’t see people taking a shower first thing first when they get home. They still lounge around. Honestly handbag hygiene is the last thing that is on my mind. Please do sanitize your keys and badges though. Stay safe!

I'm not using my H bags, but besides C/C cards, what about cash? That's probably the dirtiest thing around, I've been wondering about cash in my wallet.......
I’ve been watching the various news programs and they’ve had doctors on to answer questions. And somebody asked if the virus could stay on cash. The answer was yes and that cash was one of the dirtiest thing people handle on a daily basis. Only solution was to make sure to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer after touching cash. So those of u who keep cash in your wallets, calvis, Bastias etc maybe switch to putting cash in Disposable paper envelopes for the time being?

My gosh, I hope anyone that feels the need to sanitize their bags is also changing clothes (putting what they were wearing directly in the wash) and ideally taking a shower as soon as they get inside. Stay safe everyone!
