Hi Docride,
I'm new, in fact i 've read a lot about your wonderfull advices but it's my first question... and please excuse my english i'm french and not fluent at all ;)

So i have an old kelly in box and want to renovate it: the problem is that she is dramatically dry (see photos) and horribly dyed. i want to conditionner and redye it
so the first step, i have a doubt, is to apply Fiebing's deglazer or Fiebing's dye preparer to remove old dye or is it to conditionner her?
I can't ahve any Hermes beaum only i have:
Blackrocks
Meltonian delicate
Fiebing's glazer
Fiebing's dye preparer
Meltonian all purpose cleaner
Lexol pH (but not wipes i can't find it)
Obenauf's
Fiebing's profesionnal oil leather

so would you help me, giving the steps?

Thanks a lot
Emmanuelle

Dear Docride, Please could you tell me whether the advice not to give Barenia the B&O treatment applies only to the natural colour or to all colours, e.g. dark brown? Many thanks.

Applies to all Barenia IMO. I prefer Hermes Saddle products for this leather.
Some folks still like to use B&O on Barenia but that's not my 1st choice nor is it my recommendation.

A good matching colored polish will help mask the marks somewhat but they will not disappear. A matching color dye on the corner rubs would help mask them as well. If you are not handy then sending your bag to Hermes for spa might give you some improvement, why not start there?

Hi there, Well ,well your old Kelly looks like she will not survive any sort of solvents so skip deglazers,or dye preps, completely. I also am not so certain that you have paint on it...she looks terribly cracked..deeply into the leather. I fear she is at a point called dry rot ,where as the leather has lost it's elastisity and the innner fibers have broken to the extent that the leather will easily tear like cardboard. You can try conditioning..avoid water and lexol Ph and or watery conditioners at this point... Try the meltonian delicate at first and see how it goes... come back... and let me know how she looks and feels afterward.. And well see where to go in terms of a plan from there..OK?

A good neutral polish will protect it from water quite well, or if you have some Blackrock's Leather N Rich and Obenauf's LP you can follow the directions given in this thread. However, because you have some corner wear and you have a light color I would use caution, over doing it with conditioner and you may not end up with a great result. Take special care not to condition the worn areas on the corners.
In this case I would still just say to go with a good neutral polish or matching colored polish.

Hi Doc!
I feel so grateful to have you here to share all these knowledge! I was just reading amme's dry leather problem and your suggestions, and wonder if melatonin delicate is able to penetrate through the current dye in amme's case to moisturise the leather or can it help to remove the existing dye? It's just very fascinating to learn all these stuff! Thx!:smile1:

Hi,
The Meltonian Delicate is safe product to start with and see how it goes. It's not for removing dye;in this case I have recommended it for it's conditioning properites.
