Dear Doc,
I recently got a Vintage Chanel Lizard Camera bag and I feel like it needs some TLC. The leather feels a bit dry and some wear on the piping. I have read your recommendations for the vintage lambskin Chanels. Do they apply to the exotic Lizard?
Thank you so much for the great advise you are providing and helping our vintage finds shine :)

Hello, The mods have asked that I only respond to Hermes leather questions here.
In answer yo your question use a cleaner conditioner made specifically for lizard skin/exotic skins specifically reptile skins... Fiebings makes a good one why not start there? Good luck.

Oh I am so sorry, I didn't realize that. Thanks a lot for your answer, it is really appreciated!:smile1:

HELP!!! Hi Doc - First, let me also thank you for your help and sharing in your knowledge of leather. I have only recently purchased my first, new-to-me VL 32cm gold/carmel Plume. I need your help. I left my moon/sun roof open for my dogs, forgetting it had rained. My Plume was sitting on the front seat and had water on it. No biggie, I dabbed it off w tissues. However, some of the water had grime/mud in it. Two irregular marks are left. I dabbed a bit more but stopped not wanting to push it "into" the leather or smear it. This just happed within the last 15 min. I have some of your ecommended cleaner thanks to Lolakitten. Do I wait for the spots to dry or what???? From my reading before purchasing I know VL is a great and tough leather, but still.... Thank you for your assisstance!

Maisie

OMGoodness, it's a miracle!!

I left my Plume on the kitchen counter to "dry" (I hoped). I just came back from checking the bag and the 2 spots ARE GONE! I LOVE VL!!!!

Maisie, sounding like a first-time Mother

Hi Doc,

I feel extremely happy About ur advice that has spent to us all. Leathers are like skin, I just don't know how to make them happier!

I have a box leather calf H bag, a Togo leather in black too.

What is the must have items I should get to make them beautiful? Blackrock? Obenauf LP or oil? Should I also keep a black color melTonia cream too?

For up cleaning & keeping >Blackrocks is a great for Box Calf (Obenauf's LP only if brand new or very dry or if the bag will expected to be worn in very bad weather), Togo should do well with Lexol PH leather wipes for gentle cleaning. If you want to add additional color to say worn off corners then a matching color cream polish would be good have on hand as well. I hope this helps.:smile1:

Hi doc,

Hope all is well with you. I just scored a lovely Kelly Chevre Mysore in Rose shocking color! I am so excited now. :) I am afraid of a color transfer and rain tho. (I live in London).

The bag is a brand new. Do you recommend only blackrock or the following?
1. 2 coats of Blackrock applied in a circular motion, light coating until soaked in.
2. Followed by 2 coats of Obenauf Heavy Duty also in a circular motion until soaked in.

Is it good to treat the brand new bag to prevent a color transfer? I asked the SA and he said no leather creams? But then most shop's SAs say the same. :giggles:

Thank you so much as always! X :ty::urock:

Oh my!! I will not pretend to be an expert. LOL...I have never bought any cream, because the idea terrifies me. I know there is a continuum of views here and I will readily admit to being the most treatment-conservative girl on the block.

That said, I would never go near a new chevre bag with anything. Not until decades had passed and it was a very old goat.

Chevre has such a glorious sheen, and out-of-the-box it is exactly as Hermes meant it to be. I would do nothing to alter its character.

I will now step aside and wait for any dissenting opinions!

Hello, First off congrats on your special bag, such a fab color!

The Blackrocks & Obenauf's recipe is really not for every leather type and is reserved for leathers that blister or get water mark ie box Calf Vache Natural, Veau Pork,Box Napal,Charmonix etc...

I would NOT use Blackrocks heavily and let it soak in..please don't do that..for some reason folks seem to think I reccommend this...I do NOT. Blackrocks should be used only lightly if at all and ALWAYS remove the excess IMEDIATELY... One can always repeat an application but it can be a big mess if you over saturate your leather..OK?

In fact for your particular bag I would advise a either to
A) leave it be and not too worry too much Chevre is fairly easy care esp in a deep color.
B) a properly applied light application of blackrock and remove the excess imediately let the leather rest at least a few hours buff and then repeat if desired.
C) a properly applied good neutral polish..
D) Meltonian All Purpose Cleaner & Conditioner (this one is the most simple to use...just apply according to the directions on the bottle.. apply with a soft cloth that has the solution on it...

Options B, C and D would give you some weather protection and color transfer protection..

ALWAYS PRE_TEST A SMALL HIDDEN AREA AND WAIT 24HRS TO MAKE SURE YOU LIKE THE RESULTS before proceeding to work an entire panel or area...;)

Truth is you really don't need to worry about chevre and weather..it does just fine, if it gets some rain just promptly remove the water with a towel and allow the bag to air dry naturally without heat addition and some light stuffing inside the bag if it has really been soaked to help it keep it's shape.

Thanks for your comment. Yeah the leather is soooooo beautiful. I had a very bad experience with my chanel lamb skin bag, so I am a bit scared. :sweatdrop: I don't want that to happen to my new Kelly. :)

Thank you so much for your help Doc!
What's your opinion of Appleguard??? I bought Hermes glove and the insert had that the glove already is treated with Appleguard. I was wondering your thoughts on using Applguard on this leather?

I don't use this product personally I have heard folks like it... If you have some you can test it in a small hidden area and see how you like it.
