to be technical, dry time has everything to do with how much water has to evaporate...as well as how dry and warm the enviornment is. Do not speed the process up with heat application, just let it dry naturally, and slowly..it looks like the grain will recover as long as you have not actually pushed the grain down with your cleaning prior....

thank you so much for your patien reply!!!!

Thanks Doc for your very quick reply. I have written to the sellers and they say they think that Hermes spa can fix the discoloration. I also would much prefer to leave it to the experts, preferably Hermes, but thought a second opinion from you would be reassuring. I will ask for more photos to send to you. Thanks again, J

Hi Doc, sorry, I think what I wrote above is not very clear and would like to write it again. So here goes.....
I have previously written to the sellers and they said that they think Hermes can fix the discolouration. However i thought it would be best to get a second opninion from you. Do you think Hermes craftsmen can help here? I would prefer to send to experts than try to do it myself. Thanks again, J

I have a 'new-to-me' hermes birkin bag. The seal on the top of the handles has cracked in some places and at the very top (where you carry it with your hands/on the crook of your arm) it has worn off completely.

The stitching is intact, its just the seal (lining type of edge) that has worn off/cracked.

Is this common with birkin's that have been used a lot?
is there anything I could do to fix it, would a spa treatment at Hermes fix improve this?

thanks very much :p

Doc,
What leather cleaner and conditions should not be used on vintage shiny croc?

Lala
The answer is pretty much everything..so I will not make a list of things not to use as I would be here typing all day..I hope you understand?

Is it an Hermes? If so send it to H spa.
Or a very excellent professional
To clean and condition shiny croc you will need someone who will replace the shine which would be lost in the cleaning and conditioning process.Cheers, doc

Yea, it is shiny porosus. The glaze is fine and it doesn't need a spa yet, but I was wondering whether it would be ok to use something every now and then for maintenance and upkeep. Did I mention that it's black?

Hi again, If you use something like a cleaner or conditioner you will lose the shiny high gloss finish... it will look less shiny... Best to send it to H..or a very trusted professional. Most places other than H will spray the bag down with acrylic..be very careful if you send it out for servicing. OK?
If it was non-shiny I would have a few product deemed safe, but it's shiny so I have only the advice I have given thus far.Enjoy your very lovely Croc.:smile1:

Hi,

Hello, Yes you can have this fixed, it's call reburnishing the edges...and yes it's quite common for this to occur. This is the resin like wax which wears away,it's an esay and inexpensive fix, but I do not know what H charges for this service.

Yes it's quite common,it's an easy fix just take it in to H they will reburnish your edges with a resin wax for you,it's not all that expensive but I do not know the actual price H charges.

Hi all
Wow..thats realy a awsome forum for Hermès stuff. Lots of cool pictures and information. Congrats! I'm thinking about buying a "vintage" Hermès garden party bag I could get realy cheep, but the color from the bag is realy bad. I saw the amazing pictures in the before/after section and thougt maybe I could color it and it would look nice again. I had black or any other dark color in mind. It would be realy nice from you, if you can give me a professional advice, if this bag is worth trying it or not... sorry for my English..I'm from Switzerland.

Hello, the bag you are asking about is leather trimed and made of amazon material which is a rubberized canvas which is prone to doscoloration, cracking and wear.It is not a straight forward restoration, nor would this material take well to most dyes. I hope this helps.
