dear docride...

i pulled out my jumping boots today after 6mos in the closet and notice that they have a slight white-ish hue on them. can i use the blackrocks and obenaufs to restore them??

Hi Docride

I need some help on how to remove oil stain from leather.

Yesterday, I was holding a bag of food and the oil leak onto my bag.

I was in a car so I immediately use tissue to wipe off. I happened to have a alcohol swab (from medical kit) in my bag so i tore it open and used it to wipe the stain area hoping it can remove the oil.

When I reached home, I pour some talcum powder on the stain, rub hard with my thumb but the stain didn't come out.

Feeling unsatisfied, I pour some more talcum powder on the stain, rub it in, left the bag alone for 1hr before coming back to check but the stain is still there.

It seems that the oil had set in!

Any idea on how to remove stain?

The bag is made of italian calf leather with matte finishing.

I just bought some corn starch to try again but I doubt it will do much as talcum had already failed me.

What color are they? Have you tried to just buff them out? Some times that's just some of the wax or oils from the finish rising to the top...First give them a serious buffing out and see if the white hue goes away... Yes Blackrock would most likely work in this case...always test a small hidden area first and wait to make sure you will like the results.

they are the black jumping boots, which i think is box leather? i did try buffing them a little but it still had a faint white-ish hue.

thanks, docride!

Hello Doc!

Need your advice, just bought a So BLack Birkin (after a very long wait!), I have not used/carried it yet. I am steering on the cautious side as I have read that it the box is thinner and quite delicate.

I live in the UK so I would like to protect it from scratches and blistering - what should I do? blackrock and Obenauf's? How many times for each? Hair dryer?

Also, I have a gold clemence that is older but has not been used much. How many coats would you suggest for each product? Hair dryer?

Thanks in advance for your invaluable advice!!!!!

Hello, Congrats on your beautiful bags. No hair drier on any..OK?
Black Box Calf Blackrocks 1-2x lightly removing excess immediately with a paper towel Obenauf's 1x if desired again removing excess immediately followed by a good neutral polish.
Clemence> Lexol PH leather wipes to clean and condition, followed by a good neutral polish if desired to bring up shine or a good matching colored polish for areas of color-loss if you have them?
That's about all...

Try a bit of Meltonian color preparer on a Q-tip it will lift some of the oil out but may also take color away as well which mean s you may need to spot re-dye.... You may have set the oil by using the Alcohol wipe already...

Oh dang! I didn't know that alcohol will set the oil

I did tried the cornstarch which failed.

Will go purchase bottle of meltonian color preparer to try!

Just to ask, what is the best leather conditioner and waterproof spray out there?

Really appreciate your help!

Hi, I don't like spraying anything directly on leather too much chance for disaster. There are many good products out there, you might be happy to know that a good neutral polish can help weather protect and stain protect most finished leathers. I prefer products which do not contain silicone.Other conditioning and weather restistaing product options a Blackrock Leather N Rich and Obenauf's LP. But there are lots of products to choose from, I choose different products for different leathers.. You can check at your local Cobbler, Tack shop, Feed store or hardware store for something.

Got it. No hair dryer on both!

Will start ordering the all products. How many should I get of BR and Obenauf's? How many times do I have to do it in a year? Don't think I can bring myself to wear the Box daily.

Clemenence : doe not have any colour loss. Would you recommend in polishing it at all?

Thaka again

Hello, Conditioning epi leather can be done with products such as Blackrock Leather N Rich,Meltonian Leather Baume,etc..., scratches maybe improved only if they are light, rubs may become more noticable...if you have more noticable scratches and rubs a matching colored polish on these areas might help...however,if they are very deep then a bit of matching colored leather dye may be required...

Vachetta leather with water spots such as on the handles and straps of Louis Vuitton bags will only blend back into the patina when the leather has become quite dark (this occurs natually over time)....darkening can be hurried by the application of conditioners however, some ladies do not like to go that dark that fast..so I would say if you condition the leather from the start (ie the leather is new) with a product like Obenauf's LP Heavy duty,or other water repelling conditioner then you can avoid getting water spots in the first place.
I hope this helps?

Hi docride, I know this is just for Hermes, but just wanted to say that your tip about Black-Rock on Epi leather is a sure winner :D My Alma looks shiny and new. You are the best!!

Hi Docride,

I have spent the last few days reading through this thread and absolutely in awe of the breadth of your knowledge and contribution.

I have a vintage herbag (w black leather) coming next week and am planning to treat it with Blackrock and Obenauf as per your instructions summarized on page 19 of this thread. I just have a couple of quick questions -

some of the scratches on the bag may be more than superficial, if I wanted to use a coloured (black) polish (probably black saphir cream) to hide them, would i do that after the couple of blackrock treatments and before the obenauf? or after both?

also, the black canvas looks to be in pretty bad shape - it has faded / scratched looking patches and is pretty worn on one of the bottom corners - is there anything I can do to help this? I've read that warm soapy water is good but beyond that can I use amoral or FIEBING'S Acrylic Resolene or anything.

thank you for everything you have done already!

I've read that warm soapy water is good but beyond that can I use amoral or FIEBING'S Acrylic Resolene or anything. The black canvas can be cleaned in Cold water after spraying down with some Oxi-clean. If very faded it can also be re-dyed where and if needed with black fabric dye...allow the canvas to dry slowly do not place it in a drier. OK?:smile1:

thank you for everything you have done already!
I hope this helps? Answers are above^^^^
Congrats on your new bag!
