if
I fell into just the right amount of money needed to acquire my
Bolide, should I have to buy an agenda, scarf, etc.
first just to prove that I'd be a loyal H customer?
You wouldn't have that problem with buying a bolide. It really is the birkins that they are secretive with. They like it more when customers come in wanting the other H bags, not just the birkin.

i have been trying in vain to buy a birkin for the last 4 years...i guess the main problem is that i live in hong kong and have been told repeatedly by the local H stores that the waiting list has been closed indefinitely (and that i should probably just give up because i am never going to be one of their VIPs)...so far i have refrained from buying from a reseller - i like the birkin a lot but personally i will not take the risk of paying big money for something that may not be authentic (guess i have heard too many horror stories already)

wonder if there is anyone in a similar situation?

Thanks kelly_birkin and chigal for your support! I guess I will continue to work hard for my dreams, even it's second hand!! I don't mind!
chigal, I just can picture a lawyer (you) carrying a birkin to the court/office/meetings......... How cool is that!! Rock it girl!!
I love this H support group!!!
happytonite, have you ever think of calling/visitn H store out of Hong Kong? They can always ship to you!

CG, it is a thrill - but I can do without annual price
increases. Yikes!!

nathansgirl, Thanks for the advice. I can only imagine
what the newbie (especially a newbie who isn't
wealthy in anyway) experience is like. I have some of
it planned, I'd love to make a weekend out of it, since
both of my Alaska's are a few hours away. Get a nice
outfit and walk into the store with confidence!

sp, sounds exciting!! :) Gray is a great H color. :)

Great thread !

I am no longer waitting for my fisrt H bag, but I thought it would be nice to share my experience in this matter....As my memories seem so alive....

Talking about when I was 19.... Very shy, very not self-confident, very unable to afford anything form any designer anyway...

Two block away from my school, Hermes was there, 24 Faubourg St Honoré.... Somptuous windows as always, and a few ladies walking arround the corner carrying a Kelly bag a H scarf and some pearls... very PARIS, back then ...
The Birkin did not exist yet .
The Picotin , Garden party Evelyne were not even born in the form of a sketch...

The Hermes bag was the Kelly bag... (or the Constance...as far as I can name bags that are still on the listing...)

One day, I decided to enter the Faubourg.... I immediately felt welcome...I could not believe how nice the salespersons were to me....I was shown may be thirty scarves... They knew I would not buy anything. it was so obvious...but they were so nice... they never made me feel embarassed or abusing of their time or anything...

I was amazed by the atmosphere in the store... all sales ladies like busy bees, all nice and very very kind, and moving in all directions to please the few clients....all those wonders on the shelves....the smell of the leather...the sound of the silk...

I finally got out of the store with my mind stuck on "Les parures des sables" scarf in black.

Never came back to Hermes in ten years....Instead, I finished school, started travelling, fisrt job, second job, getting free lance, going into my own business....

10 years later, I got my fisrt Hermes scarf as a Christmas gift from my now DH.

That was like ENTERING le Monde d'Hermes ! Amazing feelling ! Great Satisfaction indeed ! Started immediately to crave for a Kelly ! Instantly !

But instead, because I could not afford the Kelly, I bought my fisrt LV bag , my fisrt Chanel, a few H scarves ...

I still wanted a Kelly, but I could not step into that expense...

I did not have that money ... or I should say I was not able to admit that I would put this amount of money in ONE bag!

Talking about times when there was no ebay, no resellers, no internet, no pruseforum, ....not even cell phones !
The Birkin was JUST OUT and was not yet considered a handbag....
The Kelly was on order only ...I mean on waitting list... The Bugatti and Plume were displayed in the stores. But not a single Kelly !

It took me two other years to finally get my Kelly....

Here I want to warn you : THERE IS NO WAY BACK !!!

I am far from my 19 years, but still recall excatly the feeling I had that fisrt time in the Faubourg.
That was the starting of the magic ! And the magic still stands, in the wonderful H bags I have been lucky enough to own since then.

Love my H bags for what they are and aslo for what they mean to me.

Love to look at all the beauties in tpf...makes me feel like there are as many happy owners as there are beautiful H bags out there

perlerare - i love your story, now i wonder when/how the birkin became so popular...

tulip618 - thanks for your advice, i will be going to bangkok this weekend and i am definitely going to try my luck at the hermes stores over there

hey ladies reading your stories tonight have made me feel really guilty ... i have always known that i want a Birkin someday .... but unfortunately in my part of the world (Christchurch, New Zealand) there is not a Hermes store in sight however we are blessed to have one LV in our garden city, being soo accessible i have this week been really naughty and blown 30K New Zealand $$ on a few scarves, a briefcase, two suhalis and 1 limited edition exotic watercolour speedy (very grateful to have such a lovely DH) ... i know in my heart that i can probably buy something H with the money but there's no stores here and from reading the thread it seems that waiting list are mostly closed even to locals let alone for someone overseas (I think the closest H would be in Australia) ... my question is what is the price range for a Birkin (excuse my ignorance) and if there are any Aussies here is there any chance of being on a waiting list ... to be honest if there was a H in my city i would in a sec return all three bags (as I already have a healthy LV collection hehehe) and go on the waiting list ... so for the expert ladies here pls help and let me know how much one would be and how to get on the waiting list for one. TIA

Oh my ultimate H would be a croc birkin or kelly in purple, black or red ..... but for now i would just love to have something H

Thank you ! As for the Birkin, I guess it really started in the mid 90's...I remember when I fist logged on ebay, in 1999, a used Birkin would sell within minutes at a Buy it Now price of more than twice the retail price !!!!!

And depending on your point of view,
HBO's Sex and the City also put the
Birkin on popular-must-have-it-now-
bag-o-meter. ;)

i am waiting for my first SO/PO-dunno which one it is yet for my birdie birkin this year! i am so excited b'c my dream of owning an ostrich birkin is actually happening that it brings tears to my eyes!:crybaby:
