I'm a male and am not too familiar with women's scarves, but am looking for suggestions as a present for my mom.
My parents were immigrants from Asia and we didn't have much money growing up, so my mom wears this fake monogram LV scarf she got from some back alleyway in SE Asia. Just got a job as an investment banker and want to get her an actual Hermes scarf for her bday coming up.
What's a "classic" Heremes scarf? I looked at the site and see so many options to choose from.

possibly, it's mustangs rather than Holstein? and there 3 of them apparently, red on the left and blue on the right!

You probably can't start your own thread yet but you will get better answers from your own thread, I think.
What you might do is have a look in the FW2018 thread at mod shots of the scarves and see if there is anything modeled there that reminds you of something about your mom or what she likes in terms of colors and designs then you can also ask people in those thread too.
The new scarves are only just beginning to show up so it will be some days or weeks before lots of mod shots show up in this one, whereas if you are looking at the currently available scarves, there will be lots of modeled pics to look at from this past season. The pictures on H dot com aren't the best ones for making a decision, but the mod pics on the fall and spring threads have caused many a stampede....
Oh yes... Shopping while cheerful and relaxed is dangerous. I learned that lesson after I woke up after a night of heavy drinking to discover that I was wearing a new silk scarf with skulls and barbed wire on it (thankfully not Hermes). I also sleepwalk occasionally and last year, I was alarmed to learn that it was also possible to sleep shop! I only realized this after strange things started showing up on my doorstep (waffle maker, fuzzy knee high socks with bears on them, 5 cases of candy)OMG.
My wallet just ran off, whimpering.
Sorry family, x-mas is canceled this year; there’s a multitude of scarves that need to make their way into my wardrobe!
(Note to self: do not enter h.com after having a glass of wine or two, once the SS ‘19 collection is available...)

Oh my. Scarves are so personal. What looks amazing on one person looks terrible on another. Color, pattern, theme, scale, and size all impact the overall look and feel.
In my opinion, the "most" classic scarves of Hermes are 90 cm silk twill scarves with an equestrian theme. The most classic of the scarves available (with yet another reissue for this Spring season) is, to me, Brides de Gala and Ex Libris. Those have probably been reissued more than any other design.
But I strongly recommend that you take your mom to a store and shop with her to look for a scarf that works and that she loves! You're just in time to arrange the logistics to get the pick of the early season. So that's how I would approach it; arrange a shopping day with Mom for January and, for Christmas, just let her know that's your intention.
Oh yes... @Dorsia@6 - the bad photography is much kvetched about by aficionados, but it's intentional to prevent easy counterfeiting. We know that any scarf that looks like the website photo is more likely than not to be an imitation because colors are different in real life.
And the stampeding effect is real! A scarf that was uninteresting or overlooked can be so beautiful and wearable in real life that it inspires other forum members to run to the store to get the same one. That was me twice this season!

Dear, my first Hermes purchase ever was a carre for my Mother with my first paycheck. Go to Hermès and ask for the silk specialist. It is no use us recommending a scarf for someone we don’t know. The SA will advise based on what is in stock and what you can tell them about your Mother’s preferences. If like me you are lucky, you will find something she will treasure for many years to come.
