I can understand your frustration. I was looking to buy 3 to 4 FJ pieces this year, and was prepared for a long wait (3-6 months) as they were popular models. But I wasn't asked to place a deposit as they were below 10k. Just had to join the queue for them.
Surprisingly, I waited less than a month for 2 of them (even my SA said I was so lucky), bought 1 of them during a random walk-in visit and lost interest in the last one so I told my SA to remove me from the queue.
I noticed that my SA has all along (gently) nudged me away from the categories that require a deposit. E.g tableware, custom watches, FJ more than 10k. Maybe I look too poor haha.
I am very particular about the things I want to get and not just buy for the sake of buying.

I was always asked to place a deposit. Even for a shawl, Oz mules, rtw etc. but the there were items that never ever came!

Me too, I buy items that I know I will use. I'm loving all the FJ I bought. I'm surprised that deposits are needed for shawls and footwear!

And I recently just got a piece of FJ that is below 10k and deposit was placed last Sep. So, WTH….
It is possible that they change their policies from time to time.
I was interested in getting a watch in 2020. At that time, my SA said I could place a 50% deposit for the model I wanted and wait for stock to arrive. But this year, she told me that they're not accepting deposits for regular watches. I had to put my name in the queue and wait for stock to arrive.
Around middle of this year she told me they stopped taking deposits for tableware even. The backlog of orders was just too much. I don't know if this is a store-specific policy or across all stores.

This shows that the queueing system is working well isn’t it? Why need to place deposits?

I’m perfectly fine to place a deposit if the items are coming within a reasonable amount of time. Even for customised watch, I think it’s reasonable. But to place a deposit and wait without any commitment to any time frame….indefinitely, insanity…

yes that's true, I prefer the queue-based system too. It's a fairer system and doesn't tie up our money.

was not too long ago at MBS? if so, you and i have the same lady

Actually when you placed the deposits, didn’t your SA warn you of the implications and the wait time? Mine would remind me that 1. nothing is guaranteed, 2. The wait could be long, 3. I should set a timeframe for myself and choose if I wanna redeploy the funds to something else. I recall this clearly coz my SA did this for my latest FJ order in April/May. Was a big ticket FJ equivalent to one QB. She said it’s because there were customers who complained bitterly about the wait.

This brings me back to the topic of elephants in the room. Hermes wants clients of a certain profile and I suppose it might be those who have no problems spending and leaving deposits to secure their wishlist items. Then there are normal beings like us with aspirations and we want to join the H league. Is it fair for us to give our SAs grief by repeatedly asking when things will come? Is it fair for us to demand that Hermes stops this deposit system that has been in place well before we joined the H game? Hmmmm I have no answers. And @smoothsailor this is not an attack against you. I’m struggling with these questions myself.

Hang on. Actually I was not told nothing is guaranteed. In fact I was told that deposits would guarantee the item. Additionally, I was told the wait would be 1 year for the FJ. When I wanted to deploy the deposit to other items, I was brushed off.

I truly wanted the FJ, hence I am still waiting for it. But you are right, the bitterness is growing. For deposits on seasonal items, I’ve utilised towards other things because the season is over. Definitely not coming anymore.

And guess what, I’m fine with the spending. I just don’t enjoy the feeling of being taken for a ride.

So, I’ll be keen to build relationships in various boutiques across other countries if I come across ready stocks. But I won’t place deposits locally anymore.
