my in laws have 4!

I know these are brown...but could I wear these with black leggings and a tunic flowy top even though its all black?

Absolutely. My sister has a pair of chocolate brown suede riding-inspired fashion boots, and that is her uniform. She works in fashion PR and looks incredibly cool. You can treat the boots as a neutral, or tie them in with a bit of chocolate in a scarf/twilly etc.

^^
I mix black and brown quite a bit. I think done right it can look very nice. Besides, I don't wear much color so I have to do something. Then again I also wear navy (or cobalt), black, and grey.

i was always taught NOT to mix brown and black. so its hard to me to convert.

Well - you're talking to a person who wears white simple pumps after labour day...

I personally treat brown - particularly chocolate brown - as a neutral. Being pregnant, I am dressing in black more than ever - and I wear brown with the black as often as possible to 'soften' the look (I actually am more of a brown person than a black person - example below). My winter hat is chocolate brown, and I have the Ralph Lauren riding boot in brown (which I wore to meet Mistikat at the H boutique this Saturday - while wearing black opaque tights, a black dress, and my brown hat!).

You definitely need to be comfortable, though. And I may be violating several fashion rules.
