It's exciting, but after doing some pencil pushing I've long learned that it is better to hop on that plane to HK -- more choices, better savings, and as a plus you even get to enjoy a holiday . I'm aghast that even when Greenbelt 4 items go on sale, some are even more expensive than getting a non-sale bag in HK or US.

Luxury industry in the Philippines proves a valuable concept: the money cycle. SSI and other luxury goods providers claim that the reason why their prices are high is because of the steep luxury tax.

So:

I love it.

I still opt to buy in HKG , pretty sure price of H in Mla will just give me goose bumps. I believe my air fare will still be a lot way cheaper if added after my purchases.

I can't even imagine how much an Hermes bag would cost once they open here in Manila. All the other boutiques owned by SSI are way overpriced, I'm sure H will be no exception.

You mean a 35 Birkin will be like USD16000!!!

exactly. I wanted a Bottega Veneta bag before, that weaved nappa messenger. it was about $2000 in the US, and at BV in Manila it's like $3000. It went on sale. it became $2500. watdafeck?

and if they're counting on profit with scarves, who the heck would buy those? it's so hot in Manila to wear a darn scarf.

maybe they'd count on selling ties/twillies, home stuff, small leather goods and RTWs. good effing luck.

I think shoppers will be buying mostly the small leather good items like belt, wallets, GPs. As far as scarves are concerned, the silk ones are too warm for Manila's humid climate. Maybe the cashmere shawls will do better since they have very interesting designs and are light enough to be worn in the evening. I think H will be a nice addition to the luxury stores in Manila. Unlike the rest of the pack, H promotes an appreciation for classic but contemporary design, understated luxury and elegance to its clientele. Also, the equestrian product line will also be popular there. Having an H boutique in any city is great in attracting tourist shoppers. Now, if only the luxury brand stores there can keep the prices low and competetive among other cities in Southeast Asia, then Manila can attract more visitors and shoppers too and try to establish the city as a world destination.

i totally agree with monseur jaegerhomme...esp in this part, Having an H boutique in any city is great in attracting tourist shoppers. Now, if only the luxury brand stores there can keep the prices low and competetive among other cities in Southeast Asia, then Manila can attract more visitors and shoppers too and try to establish the city as a world destination.

Chiffon scarves and cotton pocket squares will be a hit too. If SSI will make H prices competitive...they have to do the same to the other signature brands they carry:yes: I'm not sure if SSI also carry Balenciaga coz I've heard they're doing well there now.

Thanks Allanrvj and bagdizzy.

I also think it is very important that H in Manila to have very good buyers who can pick the hard to find H pieces that are unique, exquisite, chic and timeless. Filipinos have a natural tendency to appreciate and value excellent craftmanship and use of beautiful materials. I think H will redefine the concept of what true luxury means in its simple and understated form and how it enhances one's daily existence. I think Manila will re-learn how to appreciate and buy goods not for its brand name but for its quality and design. Like BV, which already has a presence there, H will reinstate that luxury is not something to be flaunted but rather be enjoyed privately as it appeals to one's five senses and personal style.

Well look at the bright side. We can "play" all we want and the SAs can't get snobbish because we're in local soil.

Plus we can copy everything including the reference numbers and ask somebody who's going abroad to get specifically what we want instead of just looking at the bags in magazines and not knowing what exact color will show up when it arrives.

some do. go to Gucci. you'd think the SAs own the merchandise.
