This is my dilemma. I speak French and I can pronounce things the French way, but I live in the US and my SA (and I'm guessing most of his clients) uses the "American" way of pronouncing things.

I pronounce it "wrong" (i.e. the American way) on purpose because a) people wouldn't know what I'm talking about if I said it in the French way and b) It comes across a little snooty in my opinion.

HOWEVER, sometimes I genuinely don't know how to say things in the "American" way. Chypre comes to mind.
lol Chypre ….I’ve heard “chai-per”

Honestly I don’t know whether I prefer calling it “chai-per” or “cheeeaap” sandal bc they sure ain’t cheap lol or sheeep

I know what you mean. I don’t speak French but I try to find out the proper pronunciation and say it to the best of my abilities. But it’s a fools errand bc I just end up getting “corrected”. Which is just insult to injury lol

It’s ironic that saying things correctly comes across as snooty… in Hermès  (Interestingly all the SAS I’ve come across in Melbourne or Sydney pronounce everything correctly.)

But it doesn’t help that the reseller sites regularly omit accents etc.

It's shee-preh with the usual soft last syllable. Same as the country (Chypre is Cyprus) and the perfume type named after Cyprus.
They're pronounced the same by French and Americans for the perfume but of course Americans say "Cyprus" for the country.

I always had a sneaking feeling that the fuzzy Chypre are a result of a bad H pun though...Sheep-re

Right? I will never understand how pronouncing a French brand correctly is snooty...to me it's just appropriate and respectful?! I don't hold it against anyone if they get it wrong, but should someone hold it against me for having it right? I mean, an SA is going to give me side eye for saying "Hurrrmeez", but that same SA would think that pronouncing, say, Anémone in the French way is snooty?

ETA that if H used the French names consistently on web, etc., there would be a lot less color confusion.

To be fair, I'm saying that I feel snooty when I do it, I don't know if others feel that about me  It applies to other brands as well: Yves Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton. I know the correct way to say it, but it feels wrong to say it the right way when everyone else says it the wrong way

Same logic applies to "croissant" and "espresso"

I know what you mean, it can actually be quite hard to say things the right way because it can come across as correcting people. But I’m finding that one of the joys of ”maturing” <ahem> is that I just don’t care that much any more! Just off to make myself an eXpresso now…

Lol that’s what I mean! I kind of don’t like pronouncing it the French way. It either sounds like “cheap” or “sheep” or worse a “cheap sheep”. I always felt it was mocking the consumer lol even though as you said it’s also the name of a country

Hold your nose when you say it and it will sound expensive :graucho:

I seem to remember years ago that you could order a macchiato in Paris by calling it noisette

as for being mature and not caring any more, ive pretty much given up on smooth leather chypres, and contented myself with Birkenstocks, including fuzzy ones. My SA cannot seem to get the chypre combo that I want lol.

He did find DH a pair. And DH doesn’t really think theyre comfy for long walks. So a short stroll to get an EX presso
sounds about right.

I have a pair of Chypres and they’re nice, but I’m not really sure what all the hype is about.

The noisette trick still works!

I know this is the wrong thread for it but the fuzzy Birks are more comfortable than the Chypres IMO. And this is hardly the opinion of someone anti-Hermès
