i just bought a birkin and the lock is covered with leather unlike the lock i have for my kelly which is all silver..

do u think its a good idea to use the kellys silver lock on my birken cuz i'm afraid the off white leather lock might get dirty..

Jetsetter - you might raise some unwarranted authenticity questions if you use the palladium lock too. Anyone who "knows" will be aware the bag should have a covered lock.

The whites, some beiges and the exotics all have the covered lock they are very special IMO. If you are very concerned I would wear no lock at all. :)

this place is great! i am trying to learn about all hermes leathers...
... ok so quick question(S) -
clemence is grainy?, togo is more grainy almost dotty?, and fjord is grainy dotty with veins?...

barenia is closest to what is normal leather i.e. no grains or veins? ... how is barenia dif. from vache?

chevre coromandel seems to have grains but in larger proportions compared to mysore?

Box seems to be a plain leather which has a sheen to it? ... and chamonix a matter version?

did i get it right? TIA!

Hi AmnA,

Clemence Togo and Fjord are all grainy....

All are cow lethers...Togo and Fjord can both have veining but not necessarily (none of my togo pieces have veining). This is due to how the leather is treated (frozen) and not apart of the skin. Clemence comes from a baby bull, fjord from buffalo, and togo from an adult bull. The size in graining really has little to do with the leather, as some people think togo has larger grains than clemence. Clemence is the softest of the three. Fjord is the most rigid.

Barenia is barenia because it is an analine leather that is tanned with oils. Vache Natural is also analine leather with vegatable dyes (non oily). Analine means there is no prtective layer over the leather to prevent staining.

They are smooth leathers, but so is Box, Chamonix, Swift, Evercalf and a few others. All these leathers are treated with a protective coating to resist stains.

Chevre comes from goats and yes depending on the goat the grains may differ. Chevre has a sheen to it as does Box.

Box and Camonix both come from cows. Box is the shinier version or Chamonix.

To a newbie all this seemingly high tech language can be tough.. but this sums up things quite easily...

It seems to me that the majority of new posters in this forum want information about the Birkin. I have made a list of some helpful threads that answer many of the questions those new to Hermes often ask regarding the Birkin. I know many new people are unfamiliar with the search function so I am hoping we can provide new posters with this link in the initial post and then when they are more comfortable they can search for additional information. I hope this will help and if you can think of any other threads please add them.

Hello, dsignacio.

Welcome to the forum.

You will find that purchasing your first H bag can be a lovely experience, as most members have. It is best that you try on each and every style that H has to offer. It really on depends on where, how and how often you will use it. Your bag of choice, which is the Birkin, is very versatile and a timeless classic but then again, you should also consider color, hardware, skin and size. All H bags are very durable so you there shouldn't be a problem about the H bag withstanding the climate in the Philippines (Subic can be very warm).;) All these being said, just enjoy the experience of purchasing your 1st H bag, I'm sure that you'll find the best one suited for you. Good luck on your quest!
