PETA and Animal Rights organisations have a record of mis/biased information...
And even paying people to stage/abuse animals on video to 'prove their point' (and generate donations....)
(IFF spent years investigating and found the two people who featured on the 'skinned alive' video and these two men provided sworn affidavits that they were paid to do so for videos'
I love fur and I love leather.
Animals raised for fur and leather are in general better treated than those raised for food.
They are heavily regulated by animal welfare/CITES regulations and also the first thing that shows in an unhealthy/stressed animal is damage in fur/skin quality.

I have my leather jackets bespoke made in Japan(they send canvas toiled until it’s perfect)- they’ve offered to make a bespoke bag with alligator from a Japanese tannery they claim that their highest grade is supplied to both Hermes and LV…

I don't think that anyone in this thread is taking PETA as an unbiased source. We are discussing ethical concerns around the Hermès brand. One can have ethical concerns and not be in any way a PETA supporter.

You are welcome to love fur and leather; this is after all an Hermès forum.

Let's please not derail into a discussion of leather quality. There are plenty of threads about H exotic leathers. Sourcing info for H gator can be found in their annual report; they don't cite Japan as a source as far as I can see; according to H the Mississipiensis is primarily from Louisiana.

I’m Truly sorry about messing up the thread , which was not my intention at all.

from the tannery’s own advert it’s quite obvious that their all exotic leathers are exceptional quality(I’ve been wearing alligator and lizard handbags since I was 17, now I’m 53 and my daily bag is alligator )- when I asked whether my bespoke leather tailor could use their leather I was informed that it was split into Grade 1 and Grade 2, with a Huge difference in price as Grade one was used by H, and from the sample it’s absolutely possible , you’re quite right that the best gatoris Louisiana but they’re not native to Japan, just the very highest leathers are tanned by an exotic leather specialist.

I assure you both the quality of the skin(they sent me samples) and corresponding price(which was eye watering, at one time I wanted a whole gator biker jacket) were on a par with H.

please accept my apologies , I won’t interrupt the other threads but I DO believe they supply H, I have extensive experience in leather and the luxury leather sector, and I’m convinced their claim is true.

No worries at all; it wasn't you who brought up PETA.

I'm sure your leather place is amazing; just trying to stay on the topic around the Hermes brand and its practices :flowers:

On the topic of exotic skins and killing just for the skin- there are plenty of people who eat gator and snakes but I feel brands like Hermes (probably correctly) feel that it would be more controversial to publicise their involvement in the consumption of these meats than simply disposing of the carcasses.

I used to be vegan but now I cannot see why using an animal to make something you will use is any more immoral than an animal you will consume.

The people who really get my pity are the workers who have to raise the vicious gators and the poor people who have to live within range of a farm of apex predators.

So, I come from Gypsy ancestors which is why I use it (proudly) in my username.

And I just long for the day when we can use the word again in a positive way to describe the life my family lived (ie. for a wanderer who lives in a lawful way, working seasonal jobs, often in kind, and for whom the road and new experiences and acquaintances are a critical part of life.)

I'm part Romani as well and I too wish this were the case. Unfortunately we still see posts here describing street thieves as "Gypsies".

Happily though, the issue of taking care and having sensitivity around the term appears to not be as unpopular an opinion (with most.....) as in prior times, and, before we get our posts deleted, we should probably take further discussion to the H ethics or racism in fashion threads :flowers: .

And look! I was right. Anti-racism is TOO unpopular of an opinion for the "unpopular opinions" thread. And folks wonder why members stop posting here.....
