I am so glad you found the book!
By the way, NM and Bergdorf sell Bayco. The NYC BG store has a good selection. Beautiful pieces, but high prices too. It’s funny how I buy VCA, which is nothing more than gold with some cheapy stones (MOP, onyx). Yet, I can’t do it with branded names for colored gemstones anymore. . The mind is sometimes not rational.
Good chatting with you!
Wow... book arrived fast! Great for a cold winter day with a cup of hot tea!Yes, excited, it arrived today! I look forward to curling up with it, so glad you suggested.
Ah, good to know, thanks so much. I love my NM, I hope they can survive! And they have a lovely, little VCA boutique. My SA often worked in that area of precious jewels. So many VCA temptations, I always tried to avert my eyes!I love so many of their designs, I'm close to making a purchase if I can decide which piece to buy first!
@BigAkoya I'm definitely price sensitive and not in a position to spend 100k on a ring.I would definitely prefer finding a beautiful loose stone and then having my jeweler make the setting with pictures as guidance. I do buy branded jewelry (VCA, Cartier, etc) for specific designs and do have some alhambra, perles, socrates, etc pieces. Most of my diamond jewelry is antique as I really love OEC cut stones. I also have non brand diamond jewelry for pieces that aren't 'signature' such as diamond studs, tennis necklace.
I'm just getting into colored stones and this will be my first piece. I actually first started thinking about colored stones when I saw a preowned Oscar Heyman piece at my local jewelers...I am still considering getting that one.It is a gold bypass ring with rubies and diamonds.
@etoile de mer thanks for sharing that additional info about the book. I lived in Boston at the Seaport for a couple years and that is also one of my favorite museums! My daughter is in Boston now for graduate school so I'm fortunate to have a great excuse to still get up there to visit. Probably my favorite city in the US even though I'm a NY girl!
I am hooked on the BTF rings. I have two.Wow... book arrived fast! Great for a cold winter day with a cup of hot tea!
On VCA... ooh ooh ooh! Me too! I am planning to buy more VCA in April (I need to fly to a VCA hence I figure April will be safer). I just purchased the Frivole BTF pave ring in WG and love it so much, I will get the matching pave earrings WG. I am thinking of also getting another BTF ring (I am hooked on those BTF rings now). What are you getting? I would love to know! And yes... the thing about VCA is they make sets! You just can't buy a ring, or a 20 motif. You then feel compelled to make a "set". Clever marketing.![]()
Oh wow... I did not know you like BTF rings, and you have two of them! They look great on you! Are you planning on another one, and if yes, which one? I would love to hear your expert thoughts on BTF rings.I am hooked on the BTF rings. I have two.

I so hope that the students can go back to in room classes. It's so lonely to move to a new place as a grad student and being stuck in your apt for the whole time. She was so looking forward to meeting new people!Rockerchic, fun that you lived there! I grew up close enough that we visited frequently when I was young, and then I lived, went to school, and worked in the city for years. The Back Bay was my neighborhood.I miss it, as we're currently on the "wrong" coast!
It's a wonderful place to study, I hope things can return to a feeling of closer-to-normal soon for your daughter. Certainly a challenging time for students!
And the design of the estate ring you posted is a beautiful, if you buy the ruby version, I'd love to see! I sometimes do searches online for Oscar Heyman pieces. I've hoped I might stumble upon the perfect sapphire ring!![]()

I am a WG fan, and I have a WG Alhambra MOP set (Vintage earrings, 20 motif, 5 motif bracelet). I usually wear my colored gemstone rings with Alhambra as to me, my Frivole BTF pave ring doesn't quite go in my opinion. I have seen some photos of ladies wearing Alhambra with Frivole so maybe it's okay and I'm to picky about matchy matchy.
To get a matching ring for my Alhambra set, I am thinking of the Magic BTF pave ring. This ring would also match the WG Perlee Clover bangle which is next on my list. But, and this is a big but for me... the Magic BTF pave ring seems like a logo ring as the quatrefoil is so in your face. Don't get me wrong, I love to whip out my Chanel CC logo, but the CC logo is part of the bag design. Contrast that to the Magic BTF ring and the ring is really just two large Alhambra logos. There is really no art in this ring like with Frivole/Socrates/Lotus, and it's screams "look at me, I'm wearing VCA" which is not really my thing. Then on the other hand, I think, why not? Most people are not familiar with VCA and think it's just a cute four leave clover play ring. I would love your honest thoughts on this ring.
The other ring I am thinking about is the Lotus. I actually went to buy it, but when I tried it on, the ring was just all over my hand, as in "where are your fingers?" It actually made my hand look sloppy; hence I purchased the Frivole BTF pave ring instead. I still love the Lotus or rather, the idea of the Lotus open mechanism, so that is now back in the running.
I love your photo of the Frivole and Perlee bangle! I did not think I would like Perlee with Frivole, but it looks so fabulous you!
Do you plan to get another BTF? I would love to hear your thoughts on BTF rings as they are new to me. Oh, and for a split second, I was thinking of the Cosmos Oynx and Pave BTF, but I now think no, the black oynx is too harsh and will age my already aging hands.![]()
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the Magic. Yes... I need to go try both on again and decide. My feelings for each of the styles are the same as yours. Thanks so much!
I have a small VCA collection. I have the yg 20 motif MOP, MOP yg earrings and all yg alhambra bracelet. The alhambra line got me started on VCA. I'm generally not a matching set kind of girl so I generally never wear them all together. I have toyed with the idea of the alhambra btf ring but when I tried it, I liked it but didn't love it...probably for the reasons you mentioned above. Agree that the other btf rings seem to have more artistry. I still toy with the idea though and may add one someday. I'd likely wear with the necklace but not the other peices because i like to mostly mix it up.
Then I had a Cartier love bracelet but could not get used to wearing it 24/7 so I sold that and bought the signature perlee. Because there is such a flash of shiny surface on the bracelet, the frivole ring compliments it well. In fact my SA suggeted that as a ring that 'goes' but is not matchy.
All the above are yg. I love both yg and wg or platinum. I tend to go for yg in big mostly no diamond pieces and wg if there are a lot of sparkles. My only wg VCA piece is the socrates ring...I absolutely love the lotus and tried it on ...it is gorgeous but I did feel it ovewhelmed my hand and I didn't see myself wearing it as much as the socrates. I thought I might get it in the future but then my attention shifted off VCA. I also tried the 3 flower wg frivole (is that the one you have?)...very pretty but too close to my socrates. I haven't tried any other VCA btf rings.
Now I'm really longing for some color in my collection, hence this thread. I'd rather spend my lotus funds on a beautiful big bold sapphire or emerald. Probably starting with sapphire. My jeweler also suggested Tsavorite as garnet is my birthstone but I'm not much into the regular red garnet. I'll take a look at some of those stones too.

Oh yes!!! That one is gorgeous!!Thank you for sharing your thoughts about the Magic. Yes... I need to go try both on again and decide. My feelings for each of the styles are the same as yours.
My Frivole is the two flower pave BTF in WG. Not sure if you tried it on, but I love it. It’s super blingy (I like bold rings) and it’s very easy to wear. I attached a photo below so you can see which one it is as there a few BTF styles in Frivole.
But I agree with you, you already have the major VCA pieces and very nice VCA collection. I think a nice sapphire or emerald ring would be gorgeous, especially with your Alhambra pieces and Perlee bangle.
To me, there is nothing like a bold colored gemstone ring that pops. I am sure you will find your stone & ring and it will be beautiful!
I so hope that the students can go back to in room classes. It's so lonely to move to a new place as a grad student and being stuck in your apt for the whole time. She was so looking forward to meeting new people!
I'll keep you posted on the OH piece. Also my jeweler has a sapphire piece coming in in the next week or two so I'll hopefully have more to report there! And I'll take a picture with the OH ring on as well to get thoughts.
I am definitely a fan of selling pieces you no longer love. I have sold three sapphire rings, two ruby rings, diamond earrings, tennis bracelets, and Tiffany as well. I only keep what I love. No need to have them sit in a jewelry box, and I think taste changes anyway. I’m not sure if you remember when the Princess Diana sapphire craze was in. That ring (now worn by Kate) is supposed to be a classic, but I got so sick of it. i am like you in that I think through how to match my stuff.@BigAkoya , and @Rockerchic, I'm enjoying all the jewelry chatter!
BigAkoya, the VCA pieces I most love are the Frivole and Alhambra designs. I also love some of the higher end pieces. But they're not realistic for me, lifestyle or otherwise! We share an affinity for matching
so I do see the need to carefully plot my way forward! I'm just in the process of looking at what I currently own, and what I'd like to release. Sort of surprised that pieces I bought when I was younger now feel a bit dated to me, as I try to buy timeless jewelry. It also may just be I like change, and am ready to see different options in my jewelry box! I had been such a long time Tiffany fan, but have found my allegiance to them waning in recent years. Not keen on many of the newer designs introduced since John Loring left, and have noticed some decrease in quality, too. Back to VCA, I love your Frivole WG pave ring! And the matching earrings are beautiful. I've considered both in YG, too. And I love the 20 motif Vintage Alhambra MoP in WG. So, you have some of my favorite pieces! I haven't been in to my city since last August, so have had no opportunity to browse. So, right now really still in the mulling stage. Years back (when I was trying to avert my eyes
) I so admired the turquoise Vintage Alhambra pieces, as well as the Lucky single butterfly ring. I dithered on my size for the Lucky ring, and then when I wanted to proceed, it had been discontinued!
Rockerchic, you also have so many VCA pieces I love! I feel a bit torn between their YG and WG offerings, as both are beautiful.
