ladyhermes - go for the white mop with diamond markers...you won't regret it.

I am not too sure about upgrading in your country but SA told me that if you get a white dial, you can always upgrade to the diamond markers but not with mop.

i didn't mean to put down ppl in the US...but when i was in seattle, no one (classmates, roommates) knew what it was. and even at my office (nyc)....no one actually knew what it was. only one guy made a comment b/c he was wearing a rolex. i haven't watched any movie mentioned rolex...not SATC (big was wearing one), not devil wears prada. i haven't met more than 5 ppl here in the US wear rolex. i went to private school here and met many rich kids...2 of my classmates wore rolex and they were not born here... and i was speaking for my experience. sorry if i offended everyone.

Oh I'm not trying to lash out on you or anything, I'm just explaining to you why you thought not that many people knew. Rolex watches cater more to the older crowds than to young adults. Young adults tend to select fashion watches like Chanel, which may explain why your classmates didn't know. Also men prefer Rolexes more than women since women have a wider range of selection outside of Rolex with more colorful straps and bling. Therefore, movies that target younger adults and women do not show Rolexes. Hence, Movies like SATC and Devil Wears Prada showcase more of the fashion so Rolex watches wouldn't belong there compared to a Chanel/Gucci watch. The James Bond movies, however, do show Rolexes.

I have midsize white gold.Silver dial date just. I am in the opinion that a rolex should not have diamonds. If i want diamonds ill wear my michelle. My rolex runs well yes it is kind of dated to me but its classic. Ill have it for life.

I agree with your assessment angel. Rolex watches were very popular and somewhat of a status symbol in the late 70s-early 80s in the U.S. I think the major interest in Rolexes today comes from those same folks who were wearing them back then, thus now a middle-age to older crowd. It's considered a classic, somewhat staid brand, so the young usually aren't too interested in it. Whether those who are young now will have any interest in Rolexes when they're in their 40s or 50s remains to be seen. A lot will depend on how Rolex chooses to market its watches and if it comes out with anything to capture the market at a younger age.

-you have some good points. I bought my first Rolex in 1989 when I was 33, and since then, have probably owned at least 20 (not all at the same time!)over the last 20 years, so I am the demographic to which you are referring. I love that it is classic, and in demand even pre-owned. In fact I have not bought a brand new Rolex since about 2002-2003. I have some reputable non-authorized dealers I buy pre-owned from, often at little more than 1/2 price of new. I consign the ones I want to sell, or they buy outright from me, and it enables me to 'move up' to a nicer model if I want.

If there are no non-Rolex aftermarket additions (non Rolex diamond dials. etc. on your pre-owned), I believe Rolex will service your watch, though you won't ever have a Rolex original warranty. But good rep dealers offer their own 1-2 year warranties. My local dealer (non AD) is a watch fanatic and enthusiast and can repair, refurbish, change dials, add diamond bezels etc.. He is a gem.

Just another take on how to find a nice watch at a nice price, IME
