Help and Beware of Discolorization of Vernis

It can happen to any patent leather bags or shoes. Because of what they are coated with they are sensitive to rubbing up against anything, to direct sunlight, to moisture and to being stored incorrectly. I would only be brave enough to buy vernis in a darker color and for a small item like a cles. It's pretty though.

It seems a lot of people know or has experienced the discolorization of patent leather but there was never any scientific explanation on what exactly cause the discolor. The discolor on my bag was not due to physical contact with other stuff nor exposure to sunlight. That is why I am so puzzle what the cause exactly is. I am sure there must be some PhDs around who can explain it. It is only when the scientific explanation is unvealed, we will be able to maintain it properly.

I agree I think the darker vernis colours are a safer bet and lighter ones are higher maintenance. I have a red vernis cles which is new and there have been no problems so far. Your poor bag...you must be so upset.

Yes I agree, I think bronze, indigo and red are much lower maintance than the lighter colors.

To the OP, I am so sad to see those photos of your bag. I would push back on LV to do something. Keep us updated.

Unfortunately, I think it is probably because you stored it in a dustbag and then in a cupboard. The moisture and lack of ability for the leather to breathe would probably combine with the polyurethane coating to cause discoloration.

From what I understand though, this was more of an issue with some of the older vernis material and colors, as they are changing the colors and upgrading the material this has become less likely to happen......most of the bags I've seen in vernis with this problem are from the grouping where there was the light pink, light blue, light yellow, and grey......from around 1999-2000 or so......

*sigh* that stain is heartbreaking.. :crybaby: Your pink Spring Street looks immaculate otherwise! The rest of the pink still has a very "vibrant" hue in the sense it looks like no fading or other yellowing has occurred.

I think a few weeks ago someone posted up in a thread a website that talks about LV vernis and how the colour in the older vernis tends to "move around" the bag and that the lighter colours tend to yellow/discolour, but apparently that is more a problem with the original vernis when they were first introduced and now the way they make the vernis is different so this discolouration problem in lighter vernis colours is not a big issue like before.

I tried doing a search to find it on the forum so I could post a link for you - but after a half hour I still can't find it... maybe someone else remembers this also and has better luck finding that link and posting it here? :shrugs:

Lol... ditto on what Lola said! but really that website was quite helpful if anyone else knows the link to it...

Wow. A line like that is totally devastating, especially when the rest of the Rose is so gorgeous and shiny. I purchased my Rose Spring Street used several months ago, and it has a slight yellow hue to it, but even and all over. I use it a lot. The silver Spring Street I purchased looks even better than the Rose (IMO), very shiny and no discoloration. Let's just hope that it's true the new Vernis technology is getting better. My SA just told me the same thing this week. That older colors are flatter and newer technology has improved Vernis. Oh man, given all my vernis, not sure how to deal with this.. except use them and love them no matter what... I'm so sorry, the line totally sucks....

I had a silver vernis mott that I never used, just used to take it out now and then to look at. I wish I'd taken it out more though because it ended up a light greeny grey colour, except under the flap where it was still the lovely original colour. It looked as though the colour from the dustbag had transferred onto it? It was still a lovely bag though but I ended up selling on ebay, was honest about the discolouration, and got a measly GBP60.00 for it and no feedback to boot!

Wow. Seems like staying away from vernis with overlaps might help... perhaps Bedfords and totes, Houstons, Brentwoods, Reades are safer? Good to know about the silver, I'll be careful about the flap thing too... thanks.
