I’d like to add T3 hair tools. They’re everywhere on YouTube and I fell for the hype. Bought one of their curling irons because so many influencers went on and on about how long their waves lasted. Nope. Didn’t do anything that an iron or wand that’s much less expensive can do so I returned it immediately.

Nothing beauty or fashion related, but I’m over influencers talking about Teami too.

Thought I’d mention this...
Lydia yesterday posted a video on Farfetch haul, one of things she purchased was a pair of Prada knee high classic boots. Retail ~£1400. One of the comments was that Ralph Lauren does a classic pair. She replied and said she was trying to get her hands on them but they are sold out. Rightly so they are sold out on Farfetch. Retail price ~£1000
I had look myself on RL website and some other online places (I am Lao after a pair of classic boots), fully stocked (she’s a shopaholic so no doubt she is used to researching online retailers to find what she wants if one place is out of stock).

I find it odd that if she wanted them she wouldn’t purchase from other retailers and save £400. To me this suggests she is getting at least 40% discount if she is willing to purchase Prada boots over the RL. I wish they would disclose the vouchers. 40% is huge, even in sale you can’t get that and it’s on classic items. Unless she really decided Prada boots were better.

Regardless of this I really like both pair of boots myself and looking for a classic pair like those, unfortunately both are out of my price range.

While we know that fashion influencers receive vouchers and major discounts from luxury retailers, it is still not clear how much..A smaller youtuber The Geek is chic, who works in fashion business, has hinted in one of her videos, where she complained about the lack of transparency regarding hauls and sponsors, that these vouchers can be worth thousands of euros. Many don't disclose whether an item has been bought through a voucher or a discount or perhaps it's a gift. I remember one influencer gushing about TOD'S shoes she got through a voucher from Mytheresa which means that she didn't bought it herself with her own money. Nothing wrong with it. It's a form of payment after all. But it would be nice if more influencers would be transparent with their hauls and purchases.

As for Lydia. I suspect that she doesn't fund all those hauls herself. You can usually tell how quickly she discards gifted items.

Yes, wish they would disclose the amount. I just wish they would disclose in every video and insta post when a gifted item, paid for item, partnership and sponsorship item appears. I think in Germany they now have to put an AD in whenever mentioned. I can already see certain bloggers and influencers failing at this.

I agree. It's baffling when there are so many who will try to bend the rules: ADs are not disclosed in the title etc.

Many influencers think they only have to disclose if they get paid into a personal bank account (as in cash) and don't think they have to to disclose when money is paid in ieu, added to their (retail) account. They are wrong.

Just wanted to chime in on Senreve - I was "influenced" to buy the Maestra bag for work, as I need to carry my 13" MacBook to and from the office every day, and that was the only size that would accommodate it. TL;DR: I was influenced into thinking the Maestra bag was more attractive than it is, but I don't entirely regret my purchase.

I do believe I was a bit brainwashed into thinking this is a more stylish bag than it is, but, in comparison to other designer totes or backpacks of equal durability for a daily work bag (think: LV/Faure le Page/Goyard canvas pieces), I think I would still choose this. Like I said, it's not the most stylish bag in the world, but it is more unique than a monogram canvas piece, and more durable than any other leather piece I've seen. It's also multi-functional with the ability to wear it as a backpack. I work at a company where designer goods may cause unwanted attention, so I also appreciate that it's under the radar.

That said, I haven't used the bag in 10 months since my company moved to WFH and I have no desire to use the bag for anything other than work. If we go back to the office, I'll probably continue to use it, but if daily commute is taken out of the picture, I'll definitely sell it or give it to someone in my family.

PS - I bought a pair of Lilysilk PJs and they are terrible quality for the price. Another good lesson for me in being influenced.

Senreve is a brand I will never ever buy because the quality doesn’t look that good for the price, and there are no real unbiased opinions (or at least very few) available online. And, to be honest, I think they are wildly overpriced for what they are. There are many smaller indy brands out there that have functional bags for that work well as work bags for less money. And, at least rather than spend $900 and up on a maestra, personally I’d rather spend more and get a mulberry or option with better leather.

However, I generally dislike any brand that is very heavily pushed by influencers. It’s why I don’t buy Morphe make-up.

Senreve, OMG, stop stop stop with gifting these bags to people. I saw one IRL and it looked so stiff and boxy and not the least bit stylish.

It's so super obvious when someone has been gifted something, such a huge turn-off. Thankfully I don't buy into any of them, I notice all the sponsored products but I would not buy something from a brand that an influencer is being paid/gifted to promote. You cannot trust a review from someone when they have received it as a gift.

Due to influencers’ influence I bought silk shirts from LilySilk and the Senreve mini Maestra. And I’d like to think of myself as one not easily falls for influencers’ promotion. Here’s my take (and I am not a YouTuber, not someone who is very into social media).

LilySilk: I own 4 LilySilk blouses. First order, I ordered two. I didn’t really like one of the blouses. The style is wonderful. But, the silk just too thin that it sees through. You have to wear another layer underneath. I went online to look at the description again. The two blouses are made of different kinds of silk. I love their charmeuse silk blouses. The charmeuse silk is not see through and feels soft and I love wearing it.

Senreve mini Maestra: Yes, I don’t see people using it in real life. To be honest, I have only used it a few times since I bought it, and I have had it for over half a year. To be fair, I have other bags in my collection that I don’t use as much either. Senreve bags are not only sold online, it’s also sold at Nordstrom here. I use the Senreve mini Maestra when I want something really low key in the office. It’s also my travel hands free bag. We can’t travel now, but this will be the one I take with me on flights and I don’t mind bumping it around because it’s so stiff and structured. The price point is not super expensive. I don’t bring my designers bags when I travel.

Yes... I’ve just found that the silk is really thin with the items I have ordered and it’s expensive to have to pay for return shipping when things don’t work out. I bought a dress that I’ve worn once and it’s delicate. I can tell that it could easily rip at the seams. It is not poorly constructed, but again the silk is just thin. Cuyana uses better quality silk (heavier)but their prices are higher and the have less variety in terms of styles.

Senreve— their smaller size bags may be better..Im happy to hear that your experience has been positive as it seems more genuine than an influencer’s opinion.
I did not have good experiences with the few times I purchased from Lilly Silk. The quality is definitely not worth the price, the items I purchased has not held up well, so lesson learned there.
Adding:

House of Sillage - the only only time I ever see it these OTT products is as blinged-out gifts for influencers. Someone has to pay for those lavish and expensive presents, the costs are added on to those that actually pay for them.

Wayne Goss (who is an influencer himself). Launches are a very incestuous, love-in affair with other influencers. Although I have his Artist brushes and I love them, use them every day (I paid for mine ).

Natasha Denona

Beautylish

Trinny London
(although she is an TV presenter/influencer herself) she pushes her makeup line into every vid and under the heading of every topic. Now coming to US influencers near you!

Sonia G. Brushes A lot of these brands work with Beautylish, I'm sure they're fine.

Lisa Eldridge Another pro makeup artist that's brought out her own line (and of course she has her rings). Every influencer has these too.

Hi Mirror Do NOT buy this, all your info is sold on.

My bugbear is that these companies/PR often send to all, all at once (same launch). There's no discernment. I can't help it, it puts me off more than encourages me to buy. And I don't care what they say, influencers change once they start to work with these companies, judgement often goes out the window.
I agree with you on ALL on this list. I enjoy my Wayne Goss artist brushes, I love Sonia G's brushes as well, the quality is worth the price. I was a regular follower of her blog since 2012. I agree with you on how the companies distribute the PR. To me it feels like i'm bombarded, and it puts me off.
ITA.

I know many of these PR gifts are no more than beauty/fashion editors get, but everyone knows there is a difference between how one feels when paying full-whack for a product and being gifted it. The whole 'I'm now in with this mega-cool-brand' thing is also a problem for me.

There are 3 influencers I no longer watch at all because what I used to watch them for (an honest opinion) has GONE.
Yep, I unfollowed a few in 2020 for the same reasons. One in particular did a serious 180.
That reminds me brands to add
GHD
Dyson hair wrap (sorry not sure the exact name, both the hair wrap thing and the hair straightener)

Lydia has done both. Whilst not exactly the same items, I’d wish she and others would do a comparison video. People can’t all afford both. Then again she probably wants both sponsorships.

I have GHDs, brought way back when they could only be brought from hair salons and before they got popular outside of the UK. Mine lasted a really long time (10+ years) before I repurchased. I recommend (although I would just buy the basic version).

Kathleenlights has done a comparison on Dyson and Revlon - I got the Revlon which I love. Tempted by Dyson hair straighteners, but may wait for second version before jumping.
I have been using GHD straighteners since 2007, in fact I still have and it works like a charm, I've tried Dyson air wrap, and it wasn't worth it to me. All hype!

Morphe has done really shady business practices and has been involved with some shady influencers as well..
