Have you been priced out of collecting LV and resent it or do you see current price rising trends as a positive?

Great question and conversation!

Forty years ago I got my first LV, a keepall. My parents paid $295. According to an inflation calculator that would be $867 today…..instead it is $2170!

My bag still looks amazing….ironically, I have been thinking about posting pictures because it looks so good at 40!…but I do not think today’s bags would last the abuse I put this bag through.

100%!!! Their price increases are NOT inline with inflation, so anyone trying to justify that is wrong... I loved LV when they had small intimate exclusive feeling stores, I MISS that! Shopping at LV just off 5th in Manhattan years ago vs the new giant store on 5th, was just such an experience. About 5 years ago I wandered into a Goyard store in Manhattan and it reminded me of old LV. I bought my first mini speedy (mini HL) in 1994/95, they had just had a price decrease, I paid $180 for it, now it's a little different, renamed nano speedy I think at what over $1K. We are paying for all of their big stores big advertising etc etc and getting less quality and less exclusivity (aside from those of us not willing to spend $3k on a bag that would have been $400 15 or so years ago). COVID put a dent in their profits FOR sure AND it doesn't help that they are still operating what should be hi volume stores (I live in Waikiki) at reduced hours. Many stores closing at 7-8 pm, WHAT? you're missing all the tourists shopping after dinner and drinks, SO stupid! People want to be on the beach and do activities during the day, then shop at night, read your area, serve your customer instead of making financial mistakes only to pass the cost onto your customers. Something has to give, this last increase was just ABSURD!

I just bought my first LV last weekend so I'm super late to this party. I don't really feel priced out per se, but I'm not someone who can afford to just pop in to the store and buy whatever catches my eye. I do have to budget for large purchases but it's okay b/c each piece is more meaningful to me that way, plus I don't amass a huge pile of stuff I'll barely even use.

I'm more shocked by preloved prices. For example- my one bag is a Diane for which I paid $2566 after tax. I have not seen one on the preloved sites- and I'm talking not vintage, not special edition, same exact Diane on the LV website- for less than $2900. People are clearly buying and flipping them at a profit claiming "hard to find!" which really ticks me off. You're the reason some things are hard to find :cursing:

There are a few vintage pieces I really want too but what people are charging for used bags and SLGs that are literally falling apart just blows my mind. Just b/c it has an LV logo on it doesn't make it worth $1000+, I'm sorry. My dream bag is a Multicolore Lodge PM and the prices for any in good condition are around $2k. I've convinced my significant other to take me to Japan so I can scour the secondhand shops, if I'm gonna blow a couple thou on a bag I can at least get a vacation with it :P

Congrats on your LV! I love the Diane bag, I have the pink strap. I remember my SA saying it wasn’t hot in the beginning but then all of a sudden everyone wanted the bag….I’ve seen crazy high prices for all sorts of styles. I just saw a bag on a reseller site for over retail and it was bought and it’s available on the website…..I think sometimes sellers rely on the buyers not doing research to locate the bag and just wants it no matter what and willing to pay over retail…Weird because Diane in the pink and black strap are both available on the website…Why pay over retail?

Thanks! Diane was just instant love for me, I'm an 80s kid and it looked like something one of the Heathers would have carried

BINGO! Drives me nuts. I have no problem with reselling things you just don't use or aren't in love with anymore, but those predatory resellers are trash in my book. Back when I was first getting into nicer handbags, my mom & I used to go to the Coach outlets and there would always be obvious resellers buying multiples of the same items. They'd clean out the store then go jack the prices up online b/c ScArCiTy! The stores had to start limiting everything to 1 per customer.

Urgh, anyway back on topic lol

I bought my first LV in 2017 - a NF MM. My last was a NF GM for travel in September 2019. I between, I got a Speedy B 25, a Neo Noe, completed the trifecta of NF MMand got the SLGs I wanted.

I haven’t bought a bag since 2019; I’ve been working from home since March 2020 and usually have a NF and one smaller bag in rotation at any given time. I’m really happy with the LVs I have but would not pay current prices for them. Same with my two Lady Dior lambskin clutches that are well over double what I paid in 2018. I just compared my receipts with current prices on Friday night. The price increases for SLGs like my Pochettes Accessoires are crazy.

The rest of my bags are mostly Coach 1941 from 2016-2018, with a couple of Leo & Violette bucket bags and some Le Pliage totes I use for shopping or travel.

I’m at complete purse peace; if anything I will cull a few Coach bags I just don’t think I’ll use. I’m going to retire within the next five years and will only be heading to the office 2-3 times a month. I don’t think I’ll buy another bag for years.

I did buy quite a bit of jewelry over the last year and am doing my other pre-retirement big ticket renos and furniture replacements so have just spent my money in other ways.

Around 5-7 years ago one of the things I loved the most about the LV forum was the sense that there were so many avid collectors of the brand - people who would share with the forum their multiple purchases from each new collection, the excitement of obtaining new Christmas animation pieces, etc. Unlike collectors of Hermes or Chanel at the time, it all felt to a degree somewhat accessible and obtainable.
Am I right in thinking that all of the outrageous price increases over the last couple of years has changed the culture surrounding this?
It’s a shock to me today to peruse new collections where canvas pieces are upwards of $3-4000 AUD… Mini Pochettes are over $1000 AUD etc. The days of being able to obtain a new decent sized bag for under $2000 AUD have just long gone and I wish that I’d been in a position back in the early to mid 2000s to have taken much more advantage of the accessibility of luxury goods.
Who else misses those years, or do you see current pricing trends as a massive benefit in that your purchases are constantly increasing in value in the secondary market?
I felt the same way about Chanel classic chain bags. Every time I made that purchase I couldn’t help thinking am I paying too much. But consider this, my first classic flap $1000 neiman marcus (90ties), second $1600 (2000), third $2800 (2010). Now $5800. It’s the same bag!!!! So, no. If you want it get it, get it now because the prices will always go up regardless of quality. If I get stuck with the thoughts “but I paid $1000 when I first bought it” I have to remind myself if I don’t get it now I will have to pay much more later.

I have not been completely priced out. I now have to wait much longer to fund my wishlist. What really pisses me off is LVs marketing strategy. For years items where out of stock and hard to get. When I look at the website now it seems everything is showing in stock. So essentially they raised the prices and dangled the carrot. From what I see on this wonderful forum is new purchases seem to have gone down. I love looking at all the pictures - thanks everyone for sharing.

No I haven't been priced out. Howeve, HOW I puchase and what I purchased are very different now compared to pre-Covid. The first LV I purchased was in 1996 (a Speedy 40) as my diaper bag for my first child. I have LV items from family members that went way back (trunks) but Fendi and Gucci were my brands of choice back then. I found that LV just worked for me as a working mom, more so than my other brands. Then Chanel came out with an AMAZING selection of styles year after year (I remember the Chanel forum here going crazy as everyone wanted every design!!) and I started purchasing Chanel. Hermes was located in my local Neimans and so, Hermes was added to the collection. Over the years I could call an SA and have LV items sent to try and then send back what I didn't want. I would chat, visit, attend trunk shows, etc. It was FUN.....and then it stopped being fun.

When covid hit, we were transfered to FLorida to DH's corporate HQ. The nearest LV store is an hour away. You can't call the store to see if something is in stock. You have to make an appointment, wait an hour beyond your appointment and then go in to find they have nothing you were looking for. You can't reach an SA unless you're a YouTuber/VIP. Online is OOS all the time. Getting assistance is impossible. All my contacts either retired or lost their jobs to the stores closing down for good (some were in malls that were torn down). I'm not buying "stuff" just so you'll sell me something. I'm not going to stalk a web site to catch an item suddenly drop and then sell out before I can hit "buy". Chanel hasn't had anything but flaps in almost a decade and Hermes holds zero interest now.

Enter the world of vintage and re-sellers. I have 2 who deal in vintage and know what I'm looking for and what I'm willing to pay. I have 2 who cover the world regarding LE items or something I see but can't get due to reasons I've already stated so I purchase from them. Do I pay more? Yes. Vat tax/customs, shipping and 10% of the cost goes to them as their fee. Worth it to me because I have been able to find/fill in items I've always wanted but was too busy to get (mommy and work make for a busy woman) and the few LE pieces that I would NEVER have been able to find in the US due to not being released here. I'm purchasing less and less which is fine with me. I'm not happy with the direction I see LV going but what do they care what I think; like any luxury brand, it's all about status and profits for those in charge.

Omg! We are twins!! I didn’t move to Florida but I 100% relate to every word you wrote. I have been filling in my wishlist from my younger days with Japanese resellers as well. I have come to discover, I like the old canvas WAY better than the new rubbery stuff. Now that I have discovered the click and repair part of the LV app, I have been sending my old bags in for repairs as well.

I actually think we need to thank resellers for keep the prices high that means when we resell our items we can sell for good price and sell faster, can you imaging you have to sell low and lower or worse that no one wants your bags? Resellers are the lions keep the market fresh and healthy, haha even I sometimes dislike their high prices too:annoyed:
