Gucci Vintage Information Thread

Hi everyone,

I recently inherited this beautiful old Gucci bag, which is vintage and in not great shape. Two questions for this amazing forum:

1. Anyone have info about this bag (time period, etc?). It has this great 1970s-ish metal logo as the top clasp, and a hinged frame. Has anyone ever even *seen* a similar Gucci bag?

2.The bag is not in great shape, to put it mildly. The main issue is the leather strap, which is ripping in some places and making me worried about its stability. Do I have a cobbler add a leather patch over those areas? Make a new strap? I don’t want to go to Gucci and spend a fortune, I just want to get it useable again.

Thanks so much for your help!

1960s.

You won't be able to repair it really because it's too far gone.

Just enjoy.

Did these come out in Spring 2007? I know guccissima didn’t come out until 2006 and I think I’ve spotted the bag by 2008. Idk why exactly, but I’d love to know.View attachment 5670256

I certainly remember Guccissima D ring and Guccissia Boston bags by 2008 (both not on the runway)

This is from AW07 Campaign, so quite a public statement

Hello guys!
Sorry if I am not posting in the right thread. While looking for vintage Gucci bags I came across this bag. I know nothing about vintage Gucci so I have been reading the forum to educate myself and massive thanks to @papertiger for all the knowledge! Amazing to read.
Anyway back to the bag, I don't even know if it is a Gucci (or a vintage!) as that's the only photo I found.. (sorry!) Looks like Ostrich with? Bamboo zip. Looks like it could be any brand ha!! No branding that I can see. Does anyone know the potential name of the bag and if Gucci ever made anything similar? (love that the bag is minimalist with no recognisable branding)

Lots of companies made bags that nodded to Gucci icons through the years, including bamboo details. I wouldn't presume this is Gucci without a dozen good pics. The handles look out of proportion for a Gucci dome bag (especially since it also has a shoulder strap).

Thanks lot! Was mainly after the potential name of the bag so I can see if I can find it!! That's very helpful thank you!

Some questions!
In listings on resell sites, I often see "Vintage Gucci PVC", especially on ebay from Japan. Did Gucci ever actually sell PVC bags? They should all be canvas, no?

Also, has anyone ever seen this Gucci before or know what the background pattern is called? To my eye, it's from the late 80s/early 90s, edging on the early 90s, but someone do correct me if I'm wrong. When I try to look up Gucci patterns I keep getting info on the classic monogram styles, so was perplexed at this one, despite it looking pretty legit to me (disclaimer: I am NOT authenticating this bag).

I've never heard of PVC Jackies.

Perhaps there was a crystal version like the late 00s Joys (plasticised canvas)?

There was also a line around the same time called Pop which was black plasticised material. I don't ever remember a Jackie version though.

The GUCCI pattern canvas bag is a very late 1980s/ very early '90s bag.

I think you might be right, and I wonder if the coating on the canvas is what is being referred to as PVC. It seemed like a strange way to advertise it, though. This example of that here is typical of what I'm seeing across bags from the 70s, 80s and 90s, but not so much how bags sold from the US are described.

Thanks for the info on the brown bag! I could not find a reference photo for it anywhere.

I had this vintage Gucci rectangular crossbody bag authenticated, and while I can't seem to come up with a precise date or sub collection (I believe within the sherry line, unless it wasn't called that yet?), apparently it is real! Thought I would post some pictures to help add to the knowledge base (and perhaps this can help someone else when comparing).

The canvas was not coated; the leather was a bit dry and darkened slightly when I conditioned it after taking these photos, but only very slightly. I was skeptical about the label inside, to be honest, since I know people will glue in labels--but the authenticator thought it was an authentic bag anyway. While the fabric of the inner pocket doesn't feel overly luxurious, it is clearly painstakingly hand-stitched in, as is the inner zipper. It's a crossbody bag, and has what I think is sort of a silly strap placement halfway down the bag, because unless it has some weight in it, it flips upside down when you try it on! Not an issue if it's actually in use.

Something to note that is not visible in my photos is that the zipper on the inside appears to be ykk, but the enamel coating almost completely covers this. It also seems like a zipper that should have, at one point, had a charm--but that's hard to say.

Happy to share more pictures, or learn if anyone knows about this bag!

I’m a new member. Happy to find this forum. Can you tell me more about this bag? How do I know approximately how old it is? There is no serial number. I have been researching and understand tips to help me date the bag would be the font, the zipper etc. Any comments are appreciated. Thank you.
