A little update on my vintage speed 30 purchase: it arrived yesterday. Was authenticated as real right away. It was in pretty good shape for a bag from 1996.

I was impressed with how intact the piping and monogram print were. No fading or cracking at all. I wonder if it has been used that much through the last 24 years.

I gave it some TLC to clean and rehydrate the leather and polish the hardware. But i didn’t notice two small cracks along the zipper until later on...it wasn’t disclosed by the seller. My bag isn’t returnable, so I’ve emailed to see if they will give me a small refund. I still love the bag and think $400 is a good price, but knowing that I can never bring the bag to LV for leather replacement is a bit upsetting. Not that I was going to do that but I’d like to have the option.

The first photo was taken before my restoration and the last one shows the cracks.

Hi, may I know where you had it authenticated? I’ve been seeing some vintage bags but I’m not sure how to proceed. Thanks!

Hi you can get it authenticated from Pro-authenticators. I paid $10 for verbal confirmation (in the form of an email) for a bag I purchased. You have the option of actually getting a certificate for a fee. You will need to provide photos of the date code, sides, front, back, made in heat stamp and maybe some other details. I would suggest obtaining them from the seller so you can have peace of mind before you purchase a bag. Hope that helps!

Great, thanks for the info!

Update: I was able to send the damaged bag back to the company! Customer service is going to try to find me a vintage speedy in better condition (to remake the bag with the fringe), otherwise they will give me a full refund. I’m so glad I can exchange it!

That’s great to hear! You paid good money for that bag you should be happy with your purchase even if the bag is a vintage piece. Post pics of the replacement piece please!

Hi all! I’ve been searching and searching but can’t seem to find an answer. And I am a total luxury bag neophyte and just stumbled upon this blog recently luckily!
I’m basically only into vintage bags for several reasons. My recent first LV speedy purchase didn’t go as planned. I thought I’d be safe and buy from a reputable consignment store. The bag wasn’t as good condition as pictured or described. And when I went to check the date code to find out how old it was 3 out of the 4 code checkers either came up as invalid or possibly fake! Only one confirmed the date. Needless to say I was really put off by this and asked the store for authentication. They didn’t send it to me (on their site they state that they use their party authentication but I don’t know who) but gave me a few options one of which is retuning the bag which I’m going to do. It could be rehabbed I think but I don’t want to spend more money on it as there some things that just can’t be fixed (faded heat stamp etc) and I want to love my first bag and don’t think I’m ready to refurbish something until I’m more experienced. So unfortunately I very hastily bought another bag online in (seemingly) better condition for less money BUT the metal pull tab has just fallen off. I figured it’s an easy fix but then started panicking as if it’s something easy to do, why hasn’t current the owner done it herself?? I am protected through the app if it ends up being a fake or something but she disclosed the zipper so I can’t return because of that. Anyone know if this is something that can easily and inexpensively be repaired?? It’s not the leather pull tab which I know is easy to replace. In the photo it literally just looks like the metal part has fallen off the zipper head.

thanks! I’m learning so much from everyone here on the forum and am happy to see many others who are into fixing up vintage bags

Hi there,
I’m sorry about your first preloved experience. The same thing happened to me with my vintage speedy 35. I knew I wanted to replace all of the outside vachetta and Lv repaired the zipper as well.
I also had a toiletry 15 that the zipper pull fell off. I took it into the boutique and they replaced it for free. Maybe once it’s authenticated you can take it to the boutique? They might be able to replace it for free or maybe for a small fee. If it’s not authentic then for sure get your money back. If the bag is still not in the condition you disclosed maybe you should still opt to return it? The seller should have provided all of those details prior to purchase. Just my thoughts  Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! That’s really good to know! I just find it strange why the current owner didn’t do that herself...I will definitely get it authenticated. I’m hoping this bag doesn’t end up being a dud! I am eyeing some eBay items (only after finding some good recos for sellers in this forum - I was too afraid of all the fakes out there before). Maybe third time is a charm...

I meant in my last reply that the condition the seller did not disclose I did not mean you lol. I was trying to type my reply quickly before my boys grabbed my phone lol.

Yes eBay has some great vintage pieces but also a lot of fakes. Maybe the seller didn’t want to deal with taking it in for a quick repair. I know for me the boutiques are about an hour away from me. I’ve sent in my items to repair via mail and boy do they take forever to get back.

I say if you’re not happy with your purchase you should just return it. Especially since it didn’t come as it was pictured. You shouldn’t have to settle for something you don’t love even if it’s vintage or not. That’s not good business and the seller should have known better.

That makes sense. Thanks for the advice!
