New to Hermes. Waiting to get our first Kelly (first H bag) for my wife from a H boutique. We feel a Kelly will be offered sometime this year. My wife would like to have K28 in black with gold hardware of rose gold hardware. She is 5'4". This is a bag for mostly formal occasions and not a daily bag. Least formal occasions would be shopping and going to dinners. So should it be Sellier or Retoune? I think she prefers the look of Sellier. The leather is a hard decision. She would like a leather that is durable and scratch and nail print resistant. So far we only know Togo and Epsom. What is the best leather to ask and what leathers to avoid? Sorry for so many questions. Your advice is truly appreciated.

You'll get a lot of advice that conflicts here. I am on Team I Hate Epsom, but many many H lovers like this leather, and it's the easiest to be offered in a Sellier 28. Togo in Sellier is only special order; same for chèvre; Box Calf is rare, pricey, and not sturdy. So I think you should look into Epsom Sellier and into Togo Retourné. I would also look at Kelly 25 if she plans to wear to formal events.
(The reasons I don't personally like Epsom: it is an embossed leather, not a natural grain; to me it feels plasticky; although it's fairly tough, if it DOES scratch or worse stain, it is harder to fix than other leathers. But again, many many folks love Epsom and it's a personal choice.)

Thanks! So our choices are very limited. I am not sure K25 is not too small for her. We just passed a K35 sellier and did not seem to be too big for her although she was wearing a Burberry overcoat at the time trying. We are serious thinking of her second H bag as B25 since she prefers shoulder bags in general. I think she likes retoune kelly but only worries it might lose its structure as it ages.

K28 in retourne would not lose its structure if properly stored and for occasional use.

Thanks. So this is not for work.

A small Kelly isn't a work bag in the sense that you can carry iPads/laptops/documents in it. Really I would advise a tote for work use. If I take a Kelly to work I have a separate tote (sometimes a Garden Party) or laptop sleeve to hold the work stuff.
Even a 35 cm sellier Kelly seems unwieldy to me for this purpose, but there are multiple threads on laptop/tablet bags and possibly someone likes this use.
The Kelly was designed at a time that few women went to work and no one carried electronics :flowers:

A Kelly 40 is fine for work.
I am using a Kelly Lakis 40 which is simply perfect because of the outside pockets.
Ok, it gets heavy but my laptop fits in easily.

I said that a *small* Kelly wasn't a work bag.....and that I doubted a 35 sellier would be great with a laptop. I am sure a 40 retourné is more than fine.
