French luxury group LVMH offers to buy U.S jeweler Tiffany: sources

It kind of goes back to what I said in the “how is Tiffany viewed these days” thread. Constant rotation of items makes me feel like it loses the timelessness I associate with other brands. And I think it loses the aspirational feel as well. Like this is a fine strategy for fashion and things that change season to season, but for jewelry, I would prefer to have something i can wear for years and have to risk it being “so last season” so to speak.
I’m hoping LVMH realizes this is jewelry, not clothing or handbags. But literal gold and precious materials.

I don’t think they care if it’s jewelry or clothes or bags. I’d say it’s a business model they go by. And I think it works with the masses, especially where the money is now in places like China. These rich people or “new money“ will just snap up the latest and the greatest without much thought. These may be his new target audience. U lose them if youDon’t have new stuff in a jiffy.

When I’ve looked at the site recently, it seems that silver items that are not part of a line like Peretti or Hardware are slowly disappearing. I think, despite the “not your mother’s Tiffany” that they are definitely moving to an overall higher price point and cutting out the lower cost silver items.

The cynic in me says the ads were a secret ploy to sell/get rid of all their lower end silver pieces. The Not Your Mother theme is definitely a one time theme, not an ongoing theme. Once the silver pieces are gone, then Tiffany will declare them "retired" (such a creative marketing term for "discontinued"). Peretti pieces can't be discontinued as Tiffany is under contract until 2032 (they renewed in 2012 for 20 years).

That's my guess. I do look forward to seeing some higher priced pieces.

I agree - overall I’m looking forward to more high end items!

Seeks like now is the time to pick up any silver for those interested- there were a few charms I picked up.

The SA I spoke to today said they are going to phase out making sterling silver items that are $500 or less. They will make them in white gold or discontinue.

She was also trying to explain an upgrade program that sounded like something new for Tiffany. She didn’t explain it well and I don’t know much about Tiffany to know if this is something completely new.

Thanks for that update! I think Tiffany is confused on their target audience. One the one hand, they want the younger generation, the "Not Your Mother's Tiffany" audience. In those ads, they focus on silver, lower priced pieces which I think fits the price point of the younger generation.

Then, the new ad is with Beyonce and Jay-Z wearing big bling. Associated with that ad is advertisement of Schlumberger's Apollo earrings and brooch. What "Not Your Mother" younger generation person is going to buy $38K earrings and a $40K brooch?! "Mothers" spend this kind of money!

The SA also giving me mixed messages - buy the ss pieces before they are phased out…buy that ss piece in platinum or gold!

This ad campaign needs a reboot! My Gen Z daughters are not interested in Jay-z hawking Tiffanys to them.

I’m confused on what is being phased out as well. I went to Tiffany’s the other day and the SA informed me they are discontinuing all silver and all home items.
Wow! Thanks for the tip. I need to surf the website! It's like "last chance" items.
I buy home items as Christmas gifts. I have also given countless engraved baby silver spoons.
I guess it's truly the end of an era.
