well I wasn't into handbags when I was carrying a diaper bag but I do know that my diaper bags had to be easily washable inside because I was always spilling or leaking stuff inside the bag so I stuck with the traditional diaper bag. sometimes I would just throw the whole thing in the wash, but I always had at least two in diapers at a time and I was always dropping the kids AND the diaper bag off at someones house so you have to take your daily routine into consideration when choosing that lovely bag. Any bag you pick, when the kids are finally out of diapers you are going to want to burn that bag and never see it again.

Same here!..there's always something leaking or spilling! For the 1st year, it was a diaper bag and a small/medium messenger style bag so I could have my hands free. Nothing fancy, I chose a Tumi messenger, it's a great handsome bag.

I totally agree! I did throw away my diaper bag when it was no longer needed - by then, I was sick of it!!! I also used to carry a small handbag with my stuff, did not want to put my things in the (horrible) diaper bag. Then I had at least one nice bag..

I used just one bag: the small Kate Spade black nylon diaper bag. Every single day for three years, and it wore like steel. It went with everything and I loved it, but was I ever glad to get rid of it!

When a baby is an infant, you really need to carry at least three diapers at all times, wipes, a roll of plastic bags for soiled diapers, a bottle of water or formula/milk, and a change of clothing. Food, utensils and a changing pad make life easier. All of that requires a fairly large bag.

As your baby becomes a toddler, life is a bit more predictable, and now I just carry a few diapers and wipes in my car, and I'm shopping for a new handbag.

My kids are now 10 & 13, but I used to use a Black Leather Backpack for diaper stuff & toys, and a small lunch tote for bottles.

Coach has new diaper bags too. I would have gotten one of them (if they were available then).

after 6 years and 2 kids and too many bags to mention i have finally come up with a system that works for me....if i'm out and about with the stroller all day i keep their stuff in the skiphop diaper bag which is attached to the handles and carry a smaller separate bag for myself. but if i don't have the stroller or am going to leave it somewhere not easily accessible i usually carry all our stuff together in one big bag (most often a balenciaga day/hobo because it's so light, is easily carried on my shoulder, and has two pockets, one inside and one out, so i can organize everything). i hope this helps!

When my daughter was younger, I carried a handbag and a black unisex diaper bag (from Mimi Maternity). I loved it because it doesn't have that mom look at all; it reminds me of a laptop case.

I used a large diaper backpack at first (this way hubby would carry it too). Now that I carry less stuff, I use the skip hop diaper bag (and attach to the stroller) and carry my handbag. But sometimes, I just throw my wallet and cell phone in the skip hop because I can't bother with both. It just depends on the situation and the occassion. I have many diaper bags, but I tend to go for the all black ones since they're durable and hubby will carry them too.

i usually carry a denim hobo for their "stuff" (wetnaps, juice boxes, toys, cookies, blanket, napkins, extra clothes, jackets, water bottles, ...... etc) and this is now .. I have an 8 year old and a 3 year old ..no more diapers and milk bottles and bibs and such but still there is alot of stuff to lug around .... i feel that with kids a denim bag is a miracle from God! ... so sturdy and carry so much ... i THINKKKKKKKKK burberry did one ...... or was that a fake? anyway ....
but i also buy bags for myself ..... my 3 year old rides in a buggy so i just hang their bag on the handle so i get to carry and flaunt my own bag :)

I carry a Fleurville Mothership diaper bag when I am out and about which is great beacuse it holds everything, and comes in great colors. I have the baby blue with chocolate piping. It is also nice because on more than one occasion, my son has had an "accident" and I could simply wipe it down. I also carry my MJ Blake- which is fantastic because for shorter trips, I just throw in a couple of diapers, a bottle and a small thing of wipes in it and I am out the door.

I remember when I first found out I was expecting.. I went into this mad search for the "perfect" stylish diaper bag, from LV, Gucci, Burberry, kate spade and oilily. I ended up buying a gorgeous oilily diaper bag but you know to be honest it was too heavy and got messy alot. In the end, I used this "beat me up" diaper bag that I received from my Dr's office. I still carry a diaper bag for my toddler but when I go out with my husband.. I make him carry it and I carry one of my bags. Sometimes, when I go out for a short time.. I put diapers, wipes into my bags but never his drinks or snacks.

I always carried a purse and a diaper bag. I didn't want any spilled juice or anything like that in my purse. Also, I would bring alot of extra clothing, diapers, snacks and the like. I don't think it all would've fit in my bag. :o)

I love diaper bags and have purchased a new one with each new child (3 altogether). I will say that all the compartments and diaper pads and wipe case just get in the way. I really liked my fleurville sling bag except for the non-removable bottle holder. The stork sack is very attractive but is a little "suitcasey" and the combi messenger sling was just plan ugly. Depending on your tastes, you can find just about any style, price range, and material out there. I would recommend that the bag be waterproof/resistant on the inside (at least) and has a large, zippered area where you can put all your belongings that can't get lost or dumped or gone through by your children. This site is a good launching point for a happy day of online diaper bag shopping:

Have a great time

My sister has the first one (chocolate with pink interior) and LOVES it! I ended up with the fleurville, which I also love. Both are great, functional and pretty indestructible.

nycmom, you and i must be separated at birth! after 7 diaper bags, i finally ended up with the same system as you! sometimes, though, when i'm feeling lazy, i don't bring a small purse with the skiphop. i just bring the skiphop. it has taken me 4 years to finally figure this out!
