I am so impressed with this OP!!! I love this and will try it when I get my Galliera back from repair. I am getting new rings, vancetta and strap. (Did I spell Vancetta right?) Anyway, I will try this fix out just to be proactive. I have a feeling even with all the repairs I will still get the marks.

Hi LVGLITTER,

I don't want to impose, but do you mind if I ask how much LV is going to charge you to replace the rings, vachetta & strap? Just wondering what the damage would be to have this done in the future if needed!

Thanks :)

Thank you for the photos and the step by step. This will be extremely helpful when i redo my rings too. I tried placing the IS with the solution first, but it kept popping back up. I think it was because the IS was too wide and didnt fit around the circular shape of the ring. I then just cut it thinner (maybe too thin now) and placed it dry.

I think I am going to follow your template and measurements and redo mine this evening. I have short pieces all over the rings. It doesnt look pretty and some small spaces exist between the pieces. With your measurements, I can now have a more precise application. Thank you so much for this!

I am happy to report that after carrying my bag all day yesterday, there were no black marks so the IS is holding up. I would imagine that it will eventually wear off but I will just apply more IS until my bag has enough patina that it wouldnt really need it anymore.

I definitely think the IS works and is worth the extra effort to keep the black marks away. So once again, OP, thank you!!! :flowers:
OK, I finally got around to doing this again because I wasn't happy with the alignment the first time. I also cut the I.S. differently this time to conform better to the ring.

Here are the materials you'll need to do this:

1. Invisible Shield or some similar product
2. Solution to wet the I.S.
3. Razor or sharp scissors to cut I.S.
4. Ruler
5. Cardboard tracing template

First, create the cardboard tracing template. The one I used looks like this:

The measurements for this are 2.5" L

and .5" W
Size-width.jpg

Note: You can shorten the length because there will be overlap when you apply both strips. It's up to you how much overlap you want.

Using the template, cut 4 strips from the I.S. You will need 2 for each ring.

Peel off the I.S. from one of the strips, and using either the spray bottle or your own solution, lightly moisten the sticky side of the shield. You don't want water dripping from it and falling on the bag during application, so shake off any excess water.

Starting from the top of the ring, line up the I.S. so the "V" cutout lines up where the ring meets the strap. Remember, you are applying this on the underside of the ring. Be careful and patient. It helps to have someone else hold everything out of the way while you apply the shield.

Keep pressing down on the I.S. as it dries. If any edge lifts up, apply pressure for a few seconds on that spot. Smooth out any wrinkles. As it settles it should look like this:

Once it feels firmly in place, you can repeat for the other half of the ring. No need to wait very long.

After everything is done, make sure there are no peeling edges anywhere. And pat yourself on the back...no more black marks! :yahoo:

I had done this to my galliera pm & about 3 weeks ago.

At first I used this adhesive protector for labels (office supply) but it started to loose its adhesiveness at the edges and it left an adhesive residue :PP

The product I used was bought at a mall kiosk for about 15.00. Also at the kiosk if you have them install this shield on a phone, they apply some kind of liquid solution on the shield but I did not use any solution in the application of the shield on my bag. The solution is probably some kind of activator to help it adhere better but in my case it worked perfectly without it AND I check it everyday and so far it has stayed put with no signs of coming off at the ends and edges.

You must invest in this product if you have black mark problems. I could hardly see it on my bag!! I tried to take picture but you can barely notice it in pictures taken by my SLR. I managed to take one on the buckle.

SHUTTERBUG has given you a great tutorial but DO NOT FORGET THE BUCKLE!! Ive seen pictures where black marks appear right underneath where the buckle touches the leather so protect that too! See picture!

Thanks for sharing the tips! Correct me if I'm wrong. So this shield you are using now is the protective shield we use on our mobile phone screens?

I had the same issue with the black marks on the strap under the buckle. Now that the marks is there, do you think I should remove it with white eraser and then get the shield to protect the buckle to prevent it from happening again? Or do you know if there is any other product to remove the existing black marks on the strap? And how often do you need to change the shield?

My Galliera came with the plastic shield around the rings but it still causes black rings on the leather. How about yours? Do you need to cover the plastic shield with another piece of shield?

Thanks!

Yes, the product I have on my galliera is what we use to protect the screen on phone from scratches buts its not just ANY shield. The one I bought was called ghost armor (similar to Invisible Shield). There are shields out there that are stiff but Ghost Armor and Invisible shield are flexible (feel like soft thin rubber as opposed to stiff thin plastic). Those stiff ones definitely wont hug the ring well and those are bought at kiosks that sell cell phone accessories such as faceplates, covers, holster, etc. Ghost Armor is its own kiosk (only product the kiosk sells)

Sure its a good idea to get get rid of the marks before you put on the shield. Its not necessary. The only solution I know is a white eraser. Also as the bag patinas it will blend in.

The only reason I would change the shield is because its starting to peel off at the edges. So far it hasnt even at the slightest bit (but it will vary depending on how well you apply it). Im a stickler for perfection.

What do you mean that it came with plastic shield on it? Are you referring to the newer gallieras with the plastic insert embedded in them? Or did you buy a preloved lv. and someone had already put a similar product on. If the latter, I would remove them. Maybe the existing shield is not wide enough and the brass ring still comes in contact with the leather.

Great investment to protect your bag.
