You believe that almost everybody who shops at H is after the statement bags, truly not, maybe it is different in Europe, but here the 2 main bags are known as the "pay off" or "guilt" bags, pay off for the bit on the side, guilt bag for the wife, doesn't carry the same cache, in some circles they even have a rude name, due to the reason why they are often bought. For me apart from not liking them, it would be a bit like wearing a sign "hubby needed to shut you up with bag for an indiscretion" as that is usually the reason why they are given around here (or as a kiss off to the mistress), even if they would work for me and my needs, it is that association that would turn me off. It is possible to love their scarves, belts, shoes, not to mention the horsey things they have and be left stone cold by the B and K. I am not saying there is anything wrong with liking their bags, we all have different tastes, but they are quite heavy and cumbersome, give me a soft squishy Fendi etc any day. I can still love the scarves, belts and shoes without going gaga over the bags

Oh my... "pay off" or 'guilt bags" that is quite the comment:confused1: & a very sad mentality to think of the
many women who "work hard in their careers" to make their H purchases as well as other items be it designer or not
"Hubby needed to shut you up with the bag for an indiscretion" or a kiss off to the mistress..WOW
OP wants a Kelly bag.. it's a great bag that is functional & works for many
Let the OP enjoy her journey without having a very unpleasant association which you have given about the bag
Continue to enjoy your Fendi's & let those that choose to buy Hermes have their pleasure as well be it with
a scarf, belt, shoe or the "horsey things"

@Designer_Dreams In 2017, a wonderful person put this list together:

There are many excellent bags in the Kelly-style at varying price points. Life is short. Sometimes it is best to move on.

Just, wow.

These are some highly unpleasant circumstances (and people, it seems) that you’ve found yourself surrounded in. I hope that you’re able to remove yourself eventually and move on to healthier pastures.

@Zeremine Not sure that is a fair assessment of Gabs comment. Nothing unhealthy in the comment. Years ago, yes, the Hermes Kelly was ‘something’. To some people, it still is. Times change. Too much press is not always a good thing, consider Mercedes, Range Rover, etc. Once the resell market gets saturated, then the status drops. That is one explanation given for Hermes low inventory. They are trying to keep the bags off the resell market. Yes, some men buy the K to signify various things. Others buy jewelry, usually diamonds. Others buy houses, etc. Diane Johnson wrote a book about the Kelly being the ‘indiscretion bag’ for this philanderer. It was his signal. Kate Hudson was in the movie. IIRC, Sex and the City used the same idea. Once the Kardashians started using the bags, the game was over. Different things mean something different to people. Despite Hermes’ marketing, for very good reasons, can we all accept that not everyone wants a BKC? To each his own.

Agreed, some very sexist and outdated thinking in that comment, which is unfortunate.

Oh, I’m not disputing that not everyone wants a B/K/C. I’m partial to the Kelly and wouldn’t want to be caught dead with the other two. The idea of these bags being hush gifts for the wife or side piece is, however, something that I haven’t encountered (being a single female physician who just rewarded herself with her third Kelly for the big 3-0 and all), although I can see how in some circles that might be the case. These are not circles that I find savory or would want to associate with, which is of course my own opinion.

Buying a bag for “status” rather than aesthetic or functional appeal is... not my MO, but to each their own.

Nobody in this thread said *everyone* wants BKC ok? Stop arguing as if that is a point anyone ever made...the point is most people who are consistent H shoppers are also fans of the bags and there is plenty data to support that from the resale values to polls we ran on this forum. Also can we stop continuously making this thread off topic and not providing anything of value to OP and her original question.

@momoc @Zeremine I interpreted your comments as Gabs did. I am unaware of a TPF poll or the plenty of data you mention. As a longtime Hermes shopper and I am long past 30 yr of age, never have I been tempted to buy one of their bags. Furniture, saddles, clothes, scarves, yes. Bags, nope. My point to the OP is that there are plenty of excellent Kelly-like bags out there, so I gave the TPF link that shows a substantive list of alternatives. No need to push a BKC, is there? And yes, many unsavory types own BKC’s whether or not you are aware of that. As @Zeremine says, “I hope that you’re able to remove yourself eventually and move on to healthier pastures.”

The OP clearly stated her wishes for a Kelly, not a look-alike. Who’s pushing a B/K/C? Seems like you’re projecting a bit. My comment acknowledging that not everyone is into these bags is up there for all to see, but seems like you’re determined to ignore my actual words in favor of what you think I said. I don’t think that this is a healthy mode of communication and will be utilizing my ignore function from now on. Enjoy your lovely collection in good health!

I made it very clear that I said there are people who don’t want quota bags like literally I’m not sure how much more clearer I could have been . The polls are kinda old and I apologize I don’t recall what they were called off the top of my head. More recently there have been comments in the “unpopular Hermes opinion” thread (which I’ve also ignored since I don’t like some of what’s going on in that thread) about how people don’t like friends asking them to use their quotas and all the potential headache and problems, maybe a search can let you find those.

Let’s please move on. OP has already mentioned this is a moot point for her.

I classify all of my comments throughout this thread as well as many others when I provide similar explanations by continuously repeating things about how what I will say is generally how it works, there are always exceptions, etc etc etc and I swear people still come in with “but hey I have this one personal data point that is different” and I’m just like...Sigh. Hugs to you, I’m going to ignore this entire thread now.

Yes, it seems like both of you have learned something new today.

ETA: I vote to close this thread. It has outlived any usefulness to OP.

I'm mainly here for some of the other bags and the scarves. I personally don't like the B or C very much and wouldn't buy them if offered, so it's definitely true that not everybody wants just the bags and nothing else. But that does not mean you have to bash the bags, it's not their fault certain people use them as 'guilt bags' or that the Kardashians wear them. They are still extremely well made classic, reparable pieces you can't go wrong with and can last you a lifetime IMO. I wouldn't deny myself a bag I like just because of these superficial things.
I do like the Kelly (and look at it quite a bit) but I just don't really see myself carrying it at the moment, more like in 10 years or so. By then I definitely could achieve a purchase history if I want. But I can see that it's difficult if you live so far from a boutique and want a brand new one. Maybe take a look at gently used preowned bags, instead of brand new ones on the second-hand market which come at a crazy premium. Good luck! @Designer_Dreams

Not bashing the bags, the design doesn't work for me and tbh for that price tag I can get something that does work for me, but not everybody sees them as the holy grail of bags, for quite a few reasons. I can appreciate an artwork without wanting to have it, but if you are paying that much for a bag, it has to be a bag you really love and that works for you, and if you don't like a certain bag others think you "MUST" love, you are entitled to love other items from the same designer without being slated.
