In the Interior Design/Furniture industry, I always tell people, "Well, if you don't see the difference, then you probably SHOULD buy the fake." Really, if they don't appreciate the quality differences, then let them.

That's a good one!! True, too....let them actually examine/feel/hold a REAL one....if the difference is not completely OBVIOUS (as it was to me) and they cannot see and appreciate the quality...they SHOULD NOT carry authentic...let them stick to their fakes.

maybe for these people to understand.. it needs to be presented differently.

you make up a story that they understand. So for a man, maybe use a car -- "Sir, what kind of car do you own?"
-answers lets just say "Ford Explorer".
-"Ok Sir, that's a nice vehicle. Now, how would you feel if some company in China made a lesser quality car that looked exactly like your Ford Explorer, and even went so far as to stick a "ford explorer" logo/emblem on it - AND sell it for $9000?"

Maybe then he'd get it??

Sometimes I think when you say "it's not real" people get confused. Terms like "counterfeit" or "replica" might be easier to understand for some people.

Anyway I'm just a-freakin-mazed that people actually GO INTO the Coach store carring Faux-ches and Goaches. !

Good analogy to use!

Great advice...

It should be part of the recommended handout for Coach to help educate people.

It's a tough call. Some people just come in looking to be combative and others really can't grasp the difference in price. I think you have to really care about a product and how it's made to appreciate the difference.

The public certainly is difficult to deal with. Sarah, I think you handled those situations very well but some people are a dense. Actually, I feel sorry for the elderly man but his behavior was still a bit extreme!

heh.. you could also ask if they think those cheap ass "If you like [brand x] you will like [cheap imitation scent]..." perfumes are same as the real thing.

Ladies will (or should) understand that .. !!

Wow! It's stunning that people wouldf actually get angry at you for giving them correct info, especially the old guy!

I've got to hand it to you for staying calm and seeing the humor in things - I'd probably be able to keep my cool during the incident, but would never be able to stop venting about it after the fact!

Wow......don't know what to be mad at.....the insistance that the $40 bags were "real" or the old man's temper tantrum..... It seems like you handled both situations very well....had it been me, I would've probably just walked away when the old man started going off and left him to look like an a$$ in the middle of the store.

It isn't so much that people believed the $40 bags were genuine Coach, but that they fought so hard against the idea that they weren't. They wanted to prove a point to YOU, to try to put you on the spot - which of course they couldn't do because you work in the store and you know your stuff!

I think that is rude. You handled it very well and very diplomatically, and I applaud you for not losing your cool. And what a great comment about if you don't recognize the difference then you SHOULD buy the fake! Too bad you cannot use that on customers (not that they actually ARE customers!).
