Emma Hill to leave Mulberry

Oh wow, I didn't know she was unhappy with the direction prices were going. Very interesting.

I think Mulberry found an excellent market during her time with the brand, although I do understand why long-time Mulberry lovers might dislike her designs compared to what came before her. But she did manage to appeal to a large demographic of women and about 4-5 years ago I think the brand had found a price range that was exactly right. Because you could absolutely afford to save up for a high quality bag, even on an average salary. And yet, they were on their way to get the coveted "luxury" stamp of approval. The balance was just right. Why not ride that wave for a few years and establish yourself in other markets? Why freak out like this?
My question is, will they have to find a completely different target market now that their prices are exploding AND a new designer comes in? And what happens if Guillon's calculations are wrong? They can't very well slash prices. So many issues. It will be really interesting.

What?? The man from Hermes!!!

Well, that'll be me out from buying any new M's then - I'm obviously not "good" enough. Let's see if the chavs and plebs still get them given to them for free when he's in charge - or will he try to woo the likes of Gwyneth / Jenifer / Angelina etc???

I'm not too excited about it either I liked a lot of her styles and found them all on my wish list! I hope they continue to work with tim walker for their campaigns too it was a dream combination for me. I liked mulberry because I felt is was more modest and not flashy like the monogram Louis Vuitton bags that are so popular here (no offense to the fans) but I was a hardcore louis fan until I got sick of seeing the monogram! I liked the ostrich though I could never afford it. I see tons of copy ostrich bayswaters here in the us (sold by cotton on and forever 21 ect) and the Alexa is such an iconic bag it has a huge presence here in the US and I feel like it brought attention to the company on our side though to be honest a lot of people here don't seem to be familiar with Alexa Chung.. Lol! I'm scared to see what he'll do to the company I'm young and really can't afford to pay much more for their bags.. I'm afraid hell make it too much like hermes and to be honest I feel like hermes is much too mature for me. I liked mulberrys playfulness because I feel that it doesn't interfere with the quality of the bag! And it was about me and not the brand..It isn't too good for anyone and everyone has a bag they can easily fall in love with and i don't feel as though they are completely out of reach, unlike an hermes bag which really a feat to obtain. I have a friend who works for hermes and has told me about their strange selling polices.. I fell in love with mulberry because I enjoyed their modesty I guess it's for every girl not 1 in 20000 and i dont feel like they are better than anyone and i dont feel like their trying to be and I really loved that! I don't feel like I'm trying too hard to say HEY THIS IS A LUXERY NAME BRAND AND IT WAS EXPENSIVE when I carry my bayswater or Alexa but you can still tell its a wonderfully made bag. But i did feel like i was trying too hard to be expensive when I carried my old louis bags.. And I'm afraid that this will be the direction hell take them in.. Hermes makes beautiful bags don't get me wrong but I don't think I could ever wear one because they're just known for being expensive. I don't want people to look at me and think wow she's spoiled and has a ton of money I want people to think wow she has great style and her bag is lovely! Lol sorry I went on a bit of a rant.. But I could be wrong It will be a new era for mulberry and I'm definitely sitting on the edge of my seat.. :)

Jp23 I totally get what you are saying. I work in the public sector/academia and
I would feel strange wearing a super flashy bag. I tend to avoid blingy logos, except for Daria which needs the plaque or it would just look like a sack! And as for Hermes....well their bags are exceptional but if I want a luxury car or a watch I can just walk in and buy it. It should be the same for a bag so their marketing policies annoy the hell out of me. I will never give a sales assistant that much power over me, after all they should be providing ME with a service; I shouldn't have to develop a 'relationship' with them..... :p Rant over.

I loved a lot of what mulberry had to offer in the last 5 years. Except for the bays the styles before that were a bit too rustic England for me, although they were very well made.

I own 3 LV bags, all in Damier print as I really don't want to walk around like an LV advertisement. I tried their epi leather which is also nice and understated but the leather is too hard for me.

So like you, I will miss her. I will have to pick up an AW13 piece....or two to say goodbye as spring collections tend not to work for me.

EXACTLY THE EPI WAS SO HARD!!!! Louis is everywhere here you can't open an eye without seeing one!!! And i do love the vernis and some of the other leathers! but I just recently sold an Epi saint Jacques because it was just too hard so i just love how you mentioned that LOL
And also about the whole relationship thing with hermes.. I don't even understand hahahaha my friend (well more like a friend of friend) said woman walked in wanted one of the more expensive bags as her first hermes and left and said she's return in an hour or so with her husband. And I guess his boss told him to hide it in the back room and tell her it sold and suggest one of the "starter bags"! Hahahaha maybe a birkin will better suite me when I'm older but for now I just want people to see me not the label and for me being so young I'm lucky to even have as bags as nice as I do! I'm very thankful for my beautiful mulberrys and My family for supporting my career in fashion, even as a photographer you have to look the part and I think they know that and I really appreciate them for what they do :D! but I'm telling my friend about Emma hill leaving and he brought a good point
he said "I'm sure he didn't intentionally make Hermes like a stuck up brand" LOL sorry for his bluntness hahaha but I thought that was a really good point!

Hehe. We clearly think alike.
I disagree with your friend though as I think Hermes deliberately wants to be a stuck up brand!! Haha, definitely with respect to the birkins and Kelly bags.

What they don't realise is that Hermes is carried so much better by lovely ladies here like ratrat and designerdiva than ANY KARDASHIAN!!!! So for better brand image they should make it easy for 'normal' people with cash to access instead of the Z listers!!
Hahahaha.

In the mean time I will grow old with my Bayswaters, used by 15 year olds and 50 year olds!

:goodpost:

To be honest, I don't think I'd recognise a Hermes if I walked past one. Not really my cup of tea - whether I could afford on or not. I prefer slouchy / squidgy bags, which suit my lifestyle / personal style more.

It's all a matter of personal taste really................ Right now, I'd take a nice holiday over an expensive bag. :D

Kardashians make me so embarrassed.. But I have a friend from the same town as them and he says they were horrible drivers and would park outside of the lines and nearly hit people all the time.. Lol and I totally agree maybe if we were exposed to more lovely ladies with lovely bags it would convert hermes back to being the classic grand prize vs the sort of spoiled girl theme that I think it's been associated with now :( but my fear is that those "celebrities (?)" will do what they have done to Hermes with mulberry (though I know one of the k sisters has an Alexa I think) but my bayswater has been one of my best purchases yet! It is a bag I have such pride in! And I feel super confident wearing it though at first I was worried It would be too big for me because I'm only 4 ft 11 inches but I think it still works out fine :)!!!

I love the Bayswater. Your Ledbury is really cute too. Actually I think you have a fabulous collection and really good taste and style and can totally see you being a fashion photographer. You really have a good 'eye' for putting together colours and accessories :-)

I think it's a shame about Emma Hill too - I'm not an expert but she seems pretty cool, I love her designs (well, most of them) and I always thought that the advertising campaigns/marketing were fantastic. I loved that they were quirky and edgy all at the same time.

I'm not a big fan of old school Mulberry although I appreciate the quality and when I look at my collection, they're all Emma's bags (apart from the Bays).

As for Coach - well, they're not my cup of tea, they're just a little bit cheap looking and I don't like all of the monogram and gold writing - perhaps she will be able to make some good progress there as they have the grounds of being a decent bag, just need someone like Emma to make some tweaks here and there....

In fairness to Emma, she may have provided the creative input (and clearly has a vivid imagination :o some of the catwalk shows resembled an acid trip) but she was working to a brief - in the real hard world, that's what designers have to do. Maybe we should be blaming the Ongs more - though I appreciate that without their cash injection, the brand would have died a death.

Between Emma's strange foxes, bears and tortoises and girly flowers, and Monsieur Guillon's aspirations towards Hermes uber-smartness, there's nothing for someone like me: in mid-life, no glamorous job or lifestyle, but still wanting to mix some degree of style in with functionality. I really don't have a "home brand" any more where I naturally feel drawn and that makes me feel rather sad.

Wow so interesting. I am most curious to see who will be replacing her and what the new 2015 collection will look like!
I mean I doubt it will end in the death o the brand but perhaps the brand as we may have grown to love it. I was so sure the new YSL range would be dreadful but in actual fact I've been rather impressed so hopefully it will be similar for mulberry!

Ha ha!!......maybe they wouldn't give her a pay rise lol!.......but I do think that, with her input, Mulberry became far too "commercial", watered down, and lost a little of it's exclusivity with the influx of Alexas, Del Reys and the like.....lets hope it may return to it's heritage roots and regain the sophisticated and classy image it once had......when you see "celebs" from TOWIE and the like sporting Mulberry, well, call me a snob, but it really puts me off lol!!!.....:D
