Thanks to all for their responses. I hope everyone also filled out the poll question on the number of earring holes they have.

A couple of specific responses:

• ilzabet - it would be great to hear from your mother on how they pieced her ears at the jewellers store in 1962. It would great to read of some other members mother's ear piercing stories.

• catabie - 10 ear piercings wow! Are the holes still there - I do not think that my earring holes would close.

• Babydoll Chanel - how did they pierce ears with a thread. the needle part I understand not the thread.

Ciao, Lisian

I had mine pierced at the doctors office. The look of piercing guns scare me so I remember hoping my doctor would have an alternate method. Sure enough, he did not have a piercing gun. Like another PF mentioned, the earrings were gold plated and the end was slightly pointed like a thumb tack, they were inside a plastic clip looking thing (with the front of the earring on one side and the backing in the other) with just the pointed post sticking out. He simply clipped the plastic thing with the earring inside over my ear and the earring was automatically released from the plastic clip and were in my ears. =)

My earlobes and cartlidge are pierced - both done at a pharmacy with a gun. It is fast and your ear becomes numb so there's not much pain but after getting pierced, i had to use a medicated spray that would prevent the piercing from getting infected.

I on;y have 1 in each ear because I had them done when I was young at home and in the store, but they kept getting infected!!! Turns out I am allergic to nickel so the only earrings I can wear are the titanium ones!:cursing:

I had three on my right and three on my left until I got my industrial. I decided to let the third hole on my right ear close up because it's too low. I unfortunately had my ears pierced seven times (one was a redo because I let it close up) with a gun before I knew what kind of damage I could cause with it. I got my industrial done properly with a proper piercing needle in a wonderful place called Zebra in Berkeley. It hurt waaaaay less than what everyone told me it would. The worst part is when they straightened my ear out over the barbell because it's so tender. I felt like my ear was being squished like play-doh!

Bonus pics!

And MORNING HAIR!!

These were taking the morning after I got it done.

Now I really want my labret. I even dreamed about it last night *cries*

My aunt was telling me that she and her female pals pierced their ears themselves with sterilized thread and needles and a potato. This was in the '40s. At the time many people felt that pierced ears were sinful and the sign of a prostitute. So my aunt said that she and her friends wore kerchiefs over their ears for weeks until the piercings fully healed and they could wear earrings. They didn't want their husbands to see their pierced ears. They put boiled cotton thread through the piercings and moved the thread every day until the holes healed. I would think that would be a haven for germs.

When I was a kid girls would have their ears pierced by doctors and they would wear acrylic thread through the holes until they healed. This was in the '60s. At the time I didn't know many girls with pierced ears because most parents considered pierced earrings inappropriate for young girls.

One tip my aunt gave me was that before you have your ears pierced you should massage the lobes vigorously for about 20 minutes and that will numb them. It really works.

I had the first holes done with a gun and then I did my second holes myself (and my mom's second holes) with a big huge needle. It hurt a heck of a lot more than I thought it would. :wtf:

I had mine done in 1972 (15) at the doctors office with a gun. This was the only way my dad would let me have it done. It didn't hurt at all, at least for me. I have one ear with 2 holes & one with just one.
I had several friends who had the freeze ear, needle, & potato method.

My first, when I was 5 was done with a gun. Second at 13 also with a gun. Third at 18 done with a gun. Cartiledge done with a gun. tragus with a needle ;)

I usually just wear something in my lower hole though - diamond studs so that I don't clang too much.

When I turned 10, five years ago, I got my first holes pierced with a gun at Piercing Pagoda. They turned out fine, I changed them after six weeks but I now realize that I didn't need to wait that long.
I pierced my second hole with a sterilized safety pin, without numbing and placing anything behind my ear, about three weeks ago without pain. They healed about a week after, I don't know how long I can leave them out, the longest they've been out is about twenty minutes, but they look just like my first holes - healed.
I did my cartilage the same way almost three weeks ago, and it isn't totally healed yet but its going very well, no keloids or irritation or anything.

Piercing guns cause unnecessary trauma to the tissue, and shatter cartilage. Also, they can't be properly sterilized. That's why I did my most recent piercings myself...piercing guns really shouldn't be used. Using a safety pin (the only needles I had weren't sharp enough) really doesn't hurt anyway, it just isn't as quick.

i have 3 cartilidge, and 3 regular lobe piercings. 5 were done with guns in 6th grade and thereafter. One lobe piercing I did myself with ice and a sterilized needle. It sounded like poking a needle through styrofoam :push: hahah

My aunt (who is about to retire, to give you an idea of age) had her ears done on the streets in HK, with two pieces of ginger and a needle. Horrific ! I've had all my piercings done with a gun except for my cartilage piercings which were done with a needle (since the gun could shatter the bone). I've got 7 holes in my ears in total ! ;)
