I have used Fiebings black leather dye on smooth leather on faded black bag before so that's about my experience with that but it does go into the leather. Recently I used Tarrago Dye to cover up color loss on handles and this goes on as a top coat like paint. Here's the before

And after:

It took me 3 coats to get full coverage. No sealant required.

Thank you! I'm still trying to find the perfect mink/taupe for touching up the corners on one side. So it's still a little unfinished as IDK if it will match.
